I do love a good board game night, and I've often found that great board games make for great videogames - especially the fantasy ones. Dungeons and Dragons is usually the first to jump to mind, but you shouldn't discount Ticket to Ride, Warhammer Quest, and of course Gloomhaven. Now, hoping to be counted amongst the greats is dark fantasy RPG Frosthaven, packed with slick turn-based combat and a diverse world calling out to be explored. Even better, the game is available to play right now.

Known Issues for Early Access Launch

As Frosthaven is entering Early Access and is still in development, we have compiled a list of known issues that we are actively working on fixing. If you encounter any issues not on the list, please report them using our in-game bug report tool which can be accessed by pressing the F10 key on your keyboard.

[h3]Known Issues[/h3]
  • Experimental features like “Undo Action” and “Speed-up Animations” may cause issues as they are still being iterated on.
  • In Multiplayer, characters can get locked in a preview state when two players start creating characters at the same time. A workaround for this is to create characters one by one, or to delete the stuck character and create it again.
  • In Multiplayer one of the users gets returned back to the Outpost main screen if two players click simultaneously on the same action in a sub menu.
  • Desyncs can occur in Multiplayer.
  • In Multiplayer, the “Quest Debriefing” screen shows placeholders if the party loses a quest after a client first creates a character in the Outpost.
  • Localization is a work-in-progress and you might encounter content that is untranslated or capable of improvement when playing the game in certain languages.

Frosthaven Early Access is LIVE NOW

We are excited to reveal the Early Access launch trailer for FROSTHAVEN, the dark fantasy tactical RPG based on the highly acclaimed board game of the same name – now available in Early Access on Steam! In celebration of bringing the beloved board game to the digital realm, FROSTHAVEN will be available for 10% off its retail price until August 7. Also, to give you the ultimate strategic board game digital adaptation experience, we have partnered with Twin Sails, publisher of the digital version of Gloomhaven, to offer a bundle that includes both FROSTHAVEN and Gloomhaven that will be available for a limited time.

[h3]Early Access Content[/h3]
Experience roughly one-third of the planned content for the full 1.0 version of the game, with more content and gameplay improvements intended to be added in game updates that are expected to be released in intervals approximately three months from each other. Content available at Early Access launch tomorrow includes: single player and online co-op multiplayer modes, along with NVIDIA GeForce NOW support for players to stream the game on almost any device, eight unique characters, including six starting characters and two unlockable characters, more than 35 tactical quests, including in-depth tutorial missions, more than 100 choice-driven events – with quests and events featuring voice over narration from Forteller Games. You will have the ability to build your own Outpost, by constructing buildings and completing events which will lead to unlocking new game features. Whether you’ve played hours upon hours of the board game or if you’re a newcomer, you’ll be able to jump in and get right into the action immediately.

[h3]Looking Ahead[/h3]
Current plans are for FROSTHAVEN to be in Early Access for about a year, but this can change depending on the community’s feedback and requests for content. More post-Early Access launch content details will be shared in an Early Access content roadmap that will be revealed in some time following Early Access launch. Snapshot Games developed FROSTHAVEN with Early Access in mind, as they feel strongly that player feedback will be critical to this ambitious process of transforming a board game of this scale into a video game. Early Access will help to bring the game to its full potential before it enters the 1.0 launch. We encourage you to share your feedback on our official Discord, as the team will continue to be actively monitoring, collecting and responding to feedback that’s given there – and using the feedback to discover ways to shape FROSTHAVEN during Early Access.

Beneath the Ice #4 - Into the Wild

Greetings, mercenaries, and welcome to another chapter of our Developer Diary!
This time, we’re diving into the heart of Frosthaven – its immersive environments that breathe life into the world and set the tone for every adventure.

In the digital version of the board game, the environment plays a crucial role, and bringing that same depth to the digital version required dedication, research, and careful craftsmanship. Immersion doesn’t happen by accident – but thanks to our talented team, every asset and location was built from the ground up to stay true to the spirit of Frosthaven.

Now, let’s take you behind the scenes and show you how we brought this frosty world to life. Enjoy the journey!

[h3]The Process[/h3]

We are joined by Rossen Tzvetanov, our environment Art Director, and together with his team they will explain step by step how they gave life to the frozen mountains, the unexplored depths, the mechanical halls, the mystical wilderness and many more locations in the Frosthaven world.

Without further ado, let's sit back and enjoy the ride, while listening to the tales they will share with us.

“Our journey started with a deep dive into the original board game, analyzing its biomes to understand their mood, color palettes, and distinctive features. This groundwork helped us stay true to the game’s essence while giving us room to expand visually in the digital space.
From there, we moved into concept art. This was where we defined the visual language of each biome - shapes, silhouettes, lighting, and atmosphere. These concepts became our base for building the world.

Once we had a solid visual direction, we started creating blockouts of modular assets. At this stage, we focused on shape language, scale, and gameplay functionality. In parallel, we began working on textures, building up a library tailored to our needs. Creating materials alongside the blockouts helped us ensure everything worked well together from the start.


As our procedural tools were still tweaked - designed to scatter, combine, and populate the world with modular pieces - we refined the assets to make sure they played nicely within that system. When the tools and assets felt solid, it was time for polish: refining shapes, tweaking silhouettes, and pushing material quality.


To bring each biome to life, we then created beauty and story props - unique, handcrafted elements that break repetition and add character to the world.


Finally, our level art pass focused on storytelling and composition, placing props and features in ways that hint at lore, history, and hidden narratives, while guiding the player’s eye and enriching gameplay spaces.


We’re really proud of how the environments are shaping up, and we can’t wait for you to explore them. Every tree, rock, ruin, and pathway has been placed with purpose - and we hope you feel that when you play.”

[h3]What Comes Next?[/h3]
We're wrapping up the final touches on the game so soon we will reach our last stop! Together with the community council we are actively working on implementing player-requested features every day, and we are more than excited to share the whole experience with you all!

We have only one more stop left, but don’t you worry! On the 31st of July we will officially launch Early access and will reach the Frosthaven outpost together. Until then enjoy the ride, and if you would like to receive updates about the game you can join our Discord server.
