Boris Ivanovich Kovzan
Boris Kovzan participated in World War II since the invasion of the USSR by Germany and shot down his first enemy plane on June 24th, 1941. Kovzan was a true master at ramming: he destroyed four enemy aircraft using this strategy, while remaining alive. Kovzan performed his final ram on August 13th, 1942 near Staraya Russa: he encountered superior enemy forces and received a serious head wound, losing his right eye. As a result of the collision, Kovzan was thrown out of his plane's cockpit at an altitude of 6,000 m, and it was only near the ground that he was able to open his parachute. After 10 months in the hospital, he returned to service and in 1943 received the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
August 1st - August 4th

Battle for the Bridges
At midnight on August 2nd, 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait. By morning, the Iraqis had reached the outskirts of the capital of Kuwait, which was defended by only a few hastily armed units. The 35th Brigade met Iraqi forces near the bridges over Highway 70 - and held there for several hours until ammunition began to run out. By evening, Iraq controlled most of Kuwait, and the remnants of the 35th Division, the Kuwait Air Force, as well as the country's leadership and many civilians fled to Saudi Arabia.
August 4th - August 8th

Spas-Demensk Operation
From August 7th to August 20th in 1943, the Red Army carried out an operation to push Wehrmacht forces out of the Kaluga Region near the city of Spas-Demensk. The operation was successful: Soviet soldiers pushed the front line back 40 km and liberated more than 500 settlements.
August 9th - August 12th

Tartu Operation
On August 10th, 1944, the USSR launched an offensive on Tartu, a large city in eastern Estonia. On the very first day of the operation, the Wehrmacht's defenses were broken. By the end of the month, the Red Army managed to capture the city, and in early September, they repelled the German counteroffensive.
August 12th - August 16th

Falaise Operation
In mid-August 1944, the Allies surrounded a significant part of the Wehrmacht forces near Falaise in Normandy. The Germans decided to retreat too late, and only a small number of them managed to break out of the pocket, while about 50 thousand remaining German soldiers surrendered.
17th August – 20th August

The Hardest Day
After Britain rejected German peace offers, the Luftwaffe was ordered to gain air superiority over the island in preparation for an amphibious invasion. A major attack on RAF airfields was launched on Eagle Day, August 13th, 1940, followed five days later by another. This second attack was so large that of the entire Battle of Britain, the 18th of August was nicknamed the "Hardest Day". Germany failed to achieve its objectives and abandoned the invasion of Britain.
20th August – 23rd August

Kozelsk Operation
On the 22nd of August, 1942, Soviet forces attempted to encircle German troops near Kozelsk in the Kaluga region. Due to Soviet tactical blunders and German air superiority, the offensive faltered and the operation ended in failure.
August 24th – August 27th

Liberation of Paris
Against the backdrop of the success of Operation Overlord, on August 19th, 1944, the French Resistance revolted in Paris. On August 24th, units of the 2nd French Armored Division of General Leclerc entered the city with support from US troops. Within a few hours, the German garrison of the city capitulated. On August 26th, General de Gaulle held a ceremonial parade in Paris and proclaimed the restoration of French sovereignty.
August 28th – August 31st

Yelnya Operation
After Germany invaded the USSR, the Red Army remained on the defensive for an extended period of time. Only on August 30th, 1941, did it launch its first offensive operation, eliminate the salient near Yelnya in the Smolensk region. The operation was a success: Soviet troops broke through the enemy’s concentrated defenses and drove them out of occupied territories. The units that participated in the operation were among the first in the USSR to receive the honorary title of "Guards."
