US governor boosts US-Iran 'combat footage' that is actually from War Thunder, featuring WW2-era weapons

The entanglement of war with simulation continues with the discovery that a video of a US battleship shooting down an Iranian fighter jet is very likely a clip from videogame War Thunder, depicting ordnance from the World War 2 era. The clip in question has circulated on social media to the tune of millions of views. It has also been shared around by at least one sitting US Republican statesman, Texas governor Greg Abbott, who reposted it with the caption "Bye bye". The tweet in question has since been deleted.

His “thunderstorm formula” became a classic of aerial combat: “Altitude, speed, maneuver, fire!” Pokryshkin participated in 150 air battles and shot down approximately 50-60 enemy aircraft, for which he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union three times.[/p][p][/p][h3]Pokryshkin’s P-39N-0 is temporarily available to purchase for 1,300 Golden Eagles![/h3][p] [/p]

Viral Iran conflict footage is actually just gameplay from War Thunder

Whether it be from official government sources or through citizens caught up in the conflict, there's been plenty of footage circulating online of the events happening in the Middle East following the US and Israel's military action against Iran. The White House even recently published a video montage of air strikes and warship sinkings, bizarrely laced with references to the Call of Duty games. However, one widely circulated piece of footage, which posters claim shows an American ship taking down an Iranian fighter jet, has been debunked. Was it footage from another conflict dishonestly reused? No. Was it AI-generated? Nope. It appears it was simply gameplay from War Thunder.
