"Ground Breaking": Self-Entrenching and Bomb Craters

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

What can we do now?

Interaction with the terrain and changing its shape is one of the main features of the upcoming "Ground Breaking" update. This is an additional element of interactivity that diversifies the gameplay in War Thunder tank battles. Soil, sand and snow are now not only authentically crushed under the tracks of tanks - you can dig out shelters, and bombs leave huge craters! Ramparts and craters will now create cover for vehicles and can seriously change the usual routes in War Thunder locations - both for you and the enemy team.

Ground vehicles and dozer blades

Many armies of the world make use of dozer blades on tanks. For example, in the Soviet army, from the T-72 onwards, equipment for self-entrenching was installed on all main battle tanks and some armored vehicles, and a corresponding standard appeared in the training of tank crews. Many western tanks have dozer blades both in the basic configuration and in modifications for street fighting or engineering purposes. Dozer blades and tank shovels are present on many ground vehicles in War Thunder as well, and in the "Ground Breaking" update, all of them will receive an animation of the blades sinking into the ground. Using the entrenchment equipment players will be able to quickly build tank trenches anywhere in a game location, where there are no buildings, rocks, boulders, ice or paved roads around.

Entrench!

Put the dozer blade down and rake an earthen dugout in front of you. Take it back and repeat the procedure again and again. When self-entrenching, the speed of the tank decreases due to the lowered blade, so it is advisable not to be seen by the enemy during mining operations. A few rolls - and the trench is ready. A long-term firing position with a tank inside appears literally in an open field: be it the Kursk steppes, the pastoral fields of the Maginot Line, the sands of desert maps or the snowy plains of winter locations. The tank hides its vulnerable hull, meeting enemy fire only with a turret. In addition, a tank hiding in a trench is much more difficult to hit! However, the earthwork is not an absolute shelter - you can penetrate it with a powerful kinetic or shape-charged projectile, but the thicker the earthworks are, the more difficult it is to get through.

Bomb craters

Now ammunition with a significant mass of explosives leaves craters on the soft terrain in tank locations. Air bombs weighing approximately 50kg or above, heavy rockets and missiles form a pit, the diameter and depth of which depend on the mass of the explosives. For example, a small armored car or self-propelled gun will fit into a crater from a 250kg bomb, and a crater from a 5,000 kg Pe-8’s “Tzar Bomb" will easily cover several heavy tanks at once. In the bomb craters you can hide from enemy fire, and lifting from the bottom of a deep hole to its rim can become a problem for vehicles with poor off-road performance. Explosion craters can significantly affect gameplay, making it difficult to access certain positions or providing cover in open areas.

HMS Marlborough: The Iron Duke

HMS Marlborough was a British battleship from the Iron Duke-class of super dreadnoughts, constructed just prior to the outbreak of WWI. Soon, this new naval heavyweight will join the top ranks of the British bluewater fleet as part of the next major update, bringing with it improvements in both protection and firepower!

In War Thunder, HMS Marlborough will be a new battleship awaiting seasoned captains at the top rank of the British bluewater tree following the release of the next major update. Featuring a substantially bolstered weapons arsenal and improved protection and survivability, HMS Marlborough will soon greatly reinforce the British capital ship lineup in the game!

HMS Marlborough will soon appear in War Thunder naval battles, becoming the new top British blue water vessel with the release of the ‘Ground Breaking’ major update. In the meantime, make sure to stay tuned to the news as we continue unveiling more exciting new additions awaiting you in the upcoming update. Until then, calm seas and happy hunting captains!

It’s fixed! №26

In this digest we would like to tell you about our continuing work on improvements and fixes in the game. You can find information about all updates that have been released in War Thunder on the website special section.
Dead tanks stole the FPS!

Not all ground vehicles though. The issue might happen with clones of the same vehicle in an area - for example, backup vehicles in random battles, or copies of the vehicle in custom battles with unlimited respawn. Anyway, no dead tank will steal your precious FPS anymore. It’s fixed!
Polishing the respawn marker

Recently new markers appeared to highlight the respawn zones on the minimap. We continue to make it better - this time, we fixed the overlapping of the respawn zone frame with other markers. For example, airfields with respawn points for bombers and the strike aircraft over it.
Flight data is back to the replays

In the “Direct hit” update we had the replays interface broken. In particular, we missed the instrument data in the top left corner of the screen. Thank you for heads up - it’s happily fixed.
Proper brake

With some magic in the air with those functional brakes when landing with the landing gear detached at the beginning of the airfield. No more magic here - when you lose your gear, be ready for the hard landing. Fly wisely, and land safely!

ZLT-11: Rolling Punishment

An agile wheeled tank destroyer, the ZLT-11 with a rifled 105mm gun is a desired addition to the Chinese top-tier vehicle setup.

The ZLT-11 armoured combat vehicle is one of the vehicles, based on the modern Type 08 modular 8x8 wheeled chassis, currently in service with the People's Liberation Army of China. The vehicle replaced the six-wheeled PTL02, significantly surpassing it in terms of tactical and technical characteristics. The new wheelbase allows the vehicle to keep the high dynamics, while the ZLT-11 has enhanced protection from additional armour plates. Thanks to this, the vehicle is effectively protected from the fire of heavy machine guns, and even from light autocannons from the vehicle’s front.

The ZLT-11 is a long-awaited and very useful addition to China's top armoured vehicle setup. This vehicle will appear in the hangars of Chinese armoured vehicle fans in the next major update. Follow our development diaries to be the first to know all the news about the upcoming update!

Tigre destroyer: Recruit Instructor

A pre-war Leone class destroyer equipped with multiple good guns and heavy AA artillery.

In the next War Thunder major update, the destroyer Tigre will appear as a Premium rank III ship in the bluewater fleet. The destroyers of this series were built in the early 1920’s and during their service underwent three major modernization programs in order to better meet the requirements of the times and rapidly changing military doctrines. In our game, the Tigre will be introduced as the 1934 version after the second modernization, during which 40mm automatic anti-aircraft guns were added to the bridge, and 450mm torpedo tubes were replaced with 533mm.

A well-armed Tigre must rely on maneuvering and damaging enemy destroyers with its cannon armament. She cannot effectively defend herself against lighter aircraft, but still poses a degree of danger to heavy bombers. One of the main advantages of the new destroyer is her premium status, that will significantly speed up the research of bluewater Italian ships at lower and middle ranks. Tigre will be added in the next big update of War Thunder - and she will be worth waiting for!
