War Thunder beginner's guide: tips and tricks for tank battles

Making the transition from a tank novice to a veritable Sherman is a long-winded and treacherous route without proper guidance. The difference between coming away from a game with a couple of kills and topping the leaderboard is in the details, and boy, doesn't War Thunder have a lot of details.

The simulation elements in this tank game mean that emerging victorious from an armoured scrap requires a great deal of thought, concentration and strategy. Armour angling, penetration values and shell types add complications to the basic question that plagues every tank commander's mind: can I explode it before it explodes me?

Answering that question involves far too much maths, so instead here are some basic tips and tricks to use in War Thunder's Ground Forces game.

War Thunder's upcoming Knights of the Sea mode looks set to give naval warfare its proper place in the triumvirate of battlegrounds most commonly referred to as land, sea and air. Update 2.1.0.60

A bug has been fixed with the incorrect application of wagers for ranks I-II in naval battles. Now, random aircraft, added to slots automatically, won’t specify the rank of units required in the wager’s terms.
A bug with missed hit effects on destroyed ground vehicles has been fixed.
Changes in the “Invite a Friend” system:
- Your friend’s rank II in aviation/ground forces or rank III in naval forces is required to receive the first award..
- Your friend’s rank III in aviation/ground forces or rank IV in naval forces is required to receive the second award.
- The award for achieving your friends rank III in aviation/ground forces or rank IV in naval forces has been changed from 500 Golden Eagles to 100 Golden Eagles and 300,000 Silver Lions.

The current provided changelog reflects the major changes within the game as part of this Update. Some updates, additions and fixes may not be listed in the provided notes. War Thunder is constantly improving and specific fixes may be implemented without the client being updated.

Update 2.1.0.54

A bug which would cause naval vessel crews to be blocked in battle has been fixed.
A bug which would cause the decals of one vehicle in a player’s vehicle setup to appear on another vehicle from the same setup has been fixed.

The vehicle menu is now available with the right mouse button.
A bug that stopped decal turning with a gamepad in the customization menu has been fixed.
A bug that showed the ‘Torpedo travel depth ’ option for all naval vessels has been fixed. This option is now only available to torpedo-equipped vessels.

[h3]Aircraft and helicopter model, damage model, characteristic and weaponry changes[/h3]

T-2 — A bug with incorrect positioning of ordnance in the gun pod weaponry has been changed from 2x AIM-9E, to 5x 500-fn.
He 111 H-16 — The guidance angle for the rear lower defensive turret has been fixed. The vertical guidance area has been corrected to -75 degrees.
M.B.175T — A bug where the MG 151 offensive cannons were not classified as large-calibre weapons has been fixed.
