[Event] The Battle of Kursk



From July through to August of 1943, German and Soviet forces would clash at the infamous Battle of Kursk, one of the largest tank battles in history where legends such as the Tiger, Panther and T-34 clashed in ferocious combat. Beginning with the German ‘Operation Citadel’, which aimed to ensnare Soviet forces from the North and South with a pincer movement, Wehrmacht forces faced fierce resistance from the Red Army.

The battle resulted in the first time German forces were successfully halted in their advance before being able to successfully pierce key strategic points. Soviet forces managed to not only stop the German advance, but wear down their defences and resources to the point where they could launch a successful counter-offensive.

From 15:00 GMT on the 23rd of August until 07:00 GMT on the 26th of August


Participate in the Battle of Kursk

Available events:


 [Enduring Confrontation] "Kursk" - aircraft battles.
  •  Soviet and German aviation will participate in the event.
 “The Battle of Kursk” - combined battles
  • Soviet and German machines will participate.
  • There are 3 respawns available. To fly out in aircraft, you will need to earn Respawn Scores. The number of respawns on some ground vehicles is limited for the team.
  • The difficulty level is “World War”. A special marker will appear above enemy vehicles that have been spotted by your crew. The usual aircraft marker, and “lead” marker for self-propelled anti aircraft guns, will be displayed. The external bombing marker (as in AB mode) is available for aircraft.
  • This event has 30% SL and RP bonus.


The event series in the RB game mode offers participants battles with historical setups. In some of these battles, participants will have the opportunity to obtain additional bonuses. Events can offer battle formats that are different from random battle modes in War Thunder.

[Development] Night Vision Devices and Thermal Sights



In update 1.91, we will introduce the feature of night vision devices and thermal sights for armoured vehicles and helicopters. This important aspect of modern warfare will significantly change battles at higher ranks. Today we would like to share with you how these devices will be implemented in the game, about their differences and application features below.

Night vision devices will be implemented for those vehicles that used them in reality. Such equipment is divided into two large groups according to the principle of physical action - image intensifiers and thermal sights.

The principle of operation of such devices is the amplification of reflected or radiated light. At night, such devices enhance the visibility of objects in the reflected light of the moon and stars, and in cloudy weather or with insufficient visibility, an area can be illuminated with an infrared headlamp.





Image intensifying night vision devices are divided into generations: if the first examples of such equipment had a short range of operation and could often be overexposed, then in later-generation devices, targets could be distinguished even at a distance of more than a kilometer. This division is rather arbitrary in the game and affects the clarity and range of the view. The early examples from the period at the end of World War II belong to the 1st generation. The first post-war MBTs were equipped with devices of 1st and 2nd generations. On vehicles from the 80-90s, devices of 2+ and 3rd generations are found. In the game, the night vision feature will be displayed only in those crew positions in which they were provided in real ground vehicles or helicopters - night sights for the gunner, commander, driver, and so on.

[Development] Object 685: Return of the River Mosquito



The Object 685 is a Soviet prototype amphibious light tank, developed in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s as a replacement for the obsolete PT-76. Despite it not being ordered into production, tankers in War Thunder may look forward to the highly interesting Object 685 coming to the game as part of the upcoming update 1.91!

After production of the PT-76 was discontinued, Soviet engineers began work on developing a suitable replacement around a set of requirements provided by the military. The requirements were sent to three different design bureaus, with each bureau developing its own vehicle around the given specifications.





The Object 685 is coming to War Thunder as part of the upcoming update 1.91 and will become available to all tankers at rank VI of the Soviet ground forces tree. Stay tuned for more news regarding the next major update. Until then, tankers!

[Development] USS Atlanta: The Explosive Air Traffic Controller



USS Atlanta is the lead ship of her class of eight light cruisers, initially built for the USN as flotilla leaders in the late 1930s. Soon, captains in War Thunder may look forward to having the chance to command the iconic USS Atlanta herself, upon her arrival in the game as part of the upcoming update 1.91!

In War Thunder, USS Atlanta will be a new light cruiser, coming to rank IV of the American naval tree with the release of update 1.91. Being a highly requested addition to War Thunder naval forces, USS Atlanta will offer its future captains quite an unusual set of traits, unique to this warship in particular, giving it a high degree of versatility.





USS Atlanta has set course for players’ ports and is expected to arrive with the release of War Thunder update 1.91. In the meantime, be sure to stay tuned to the news for all the latest developments regarding the next update. Until then, captains!

[Development] Map rotation filter

With the release of War Thunder update 1.91, you’ll be able to exclude maps and missions from your personal rotation, as well as mark them as unwanted.



The “Dislike” feature will be available to all players - if a few players from the matching queue have the same mission or location marked as unwanted, the location will be skipped, and the new location will be selected.



An “Exclude” map feature will be available to Premium account owners and guarantees complete removal for the player, of specific locations and missions in multiple gaming modes.



The number of maps and locations that can be selected will be limited for various gaming modes and depends on the overall number of available maps or missions in those specific modes.

The location preference settings work only in random battles in air, land and naval AB and RB.

We are limiting the “Exclude” feature only for Premium account owners as the excluded maps will increase the battle queuing time if all players in a queue have different maps and missions excluded. In such a situation, the matching system will try to find matches for a few players looking for specific maps instead of many players waiting for normal rotation.

We hope that the ability to choose your preferred locations will make your game more enjoyable and comfortable. The War Thunder development team, in our turn, will be able to see which locations most players like or dislike and therefore prioritise for recall, specific maps for revision or removal.
