Following the Roadmap: Vehicle Research Bonuses



Today, we’re ready to present to you the final version of the Vehicle Research Bonuses, which has just gone live today! For those of you who participated in the recent testing, the following changes have been made since then:
  • The number of battles with a bonus has increased from 3 to 5;
  • A 25% bonus has been added to ranks I-III;
  • While a vehicle is considered new, the bonus does not apply to it;
  • The bonus will stay active for all remaining vehicles in a tree even if you have the top vehicle unlocked;
  • The bonus now applies to the top vehicle in each nation as well. Due to this we’ve dropped “new nations” in the name of the bonus. It has instead been renamed to Vehicle Research Bonuses.

If you didn’t participate in the recent testing or would like a recap, this article explains how research bonuses will work after the changes made from your testing and your feedback.

In summary: Each day, an independent research bonus for up to 5 battles will be available for each vehicle type (Army, Helicopters, Aviation, Bluewater, and Coastal) for each nation. The bonus will be available if you have unlocked and purchased a “top” vehicle of the same type in any nation.

Bonus numbers can be seen in the “Table of research bonus numbers for each tree type and rank” table below. The bonus is calculated from the base amount of RP received in the battle and is displayed in the battle results window. The 5 battles with bonuses reset everyday at 00:00 GMT.




[h2]How do Research Bonuses work?[/h2]
Each nation and type of vehicle (Army, Helicopters, Aviation, Bluewater and Coastal) will each receive a bonus when researching vehicles that are not considered new. This bonus will be active for 5 battles each day if you have researched and purchased a “top” vehicle in one of the respective trees in any nation.

In each tree there are vehicles that are considered “top”. Once you’ve researched and purchased one of these vehicles, you’ll receive research bonuses for that vehicle tree. The size of the research bonus depends on the rank of the vehicle being researched.

[h2]What counts as a “Top” vehicle?[/h2]
A “top” vehicle is (all conditions must be met):
  • A researchable vehicle. The following do not count: premium and squadron vehicles, event vehicles, store pack or marketplace vehicles, and hidden vehicles.
  • A vehicle that is last in its line in the research tree. If the last in the line is in a group, then the first vehicle is considered the “top” one.
  • A vehicle that is located at the maximum rank in the research tree.
  • A vehicle whose maximum Battle Rating among all modes is no more than 2 Battle Rating steps lower than the maximum Battle Rating of this tree. For example, the maximum Battle Rating of France’s aviation is 13.7. 2 steps lower would be 13.0 (13.7 to 13.3, then to 13.0). Meaning a vehicle in this tree below 13.0 even at the maximum rank does not count as a “top” vehicle.

You can easily find the “top” vehicle by looking in the tree — it’s connected by an arrow to the new Research Bonus Block at the bottom. If at least one arrow from the “top” vehicle to the research bonus block in the research tree is not red, then the bonus is unlocked in this tree.



[h2]An example of this feature in use[/h2]
If you’ve purchased the M1A2 SEP V2 in the US Army tree — which is the last rank VIII vehicle here — you’ll get a bonus when researching ground vehicles in all nations. This means that you can research, for example, the Strv 81 with a 50% research point bonus (which is the bonus value for rank V ground vehicles), for the Swedish ground tree for the first 5 battles of each day.

[h2]Checking which nations you currently have bonuses for[/h2]
To see which nations still have research bonuses for the day, hover over this new block section in each of the Army, Aviation, Helicopters, Bluewater / Coastal fleet trees. In the example below, one battle for US ground vehicles has already been played.



The daily Research Bonus icon is shown on each nation. Hovering over it will show you which vehicle will receive the bonus.





If you already have “top” vehicles for several types, nations or trees, this list can quickly become very large. In this case you can disable the “Show the remaining bonus in headers” option for individual trees that you don’t want to advance through at the moment.



[h2]The numbers[/h2]

This information can be seen by hovering over the new research icon on a vehicle that you’re researching. This icon will only appear if the current vehicle type already has Research Point bonuses and will only be displayed as active (bright) if bonus battles for today haven’t yet been spent and the vehicle is not considered new.



Once you’ve played all 5 research bonus battles for a nation and vehicle type, the reset happens at 00:00 GMT everyday (the time shown in-game is specific based on your local time). The bonus amount is calculated on the base Research Points gained in a battle, the same as how Skill Bonuses work.

For Enduring Confrontation (EC), every 30 minutes spent in battle will use up a bonus battle, similar to how boosters work. Although, as the bonus applies to base RP earned, using up multiple bonus battles in one match won’t increase the earnings.

For example, if you have 5 bonus battles left and play a 3 hour long EC match, you will receive the same bonus amount as if you played 1 bonus battle.



[h2]How to see your bonuses after a battle[/h2]
Research Bonuses work in any random battles game mode, and will be applied if a valid vehicle was used. For example, if you spawn an aircraft and tank in combined battles and have the bonus active for both, the bonus will apply to the base reward for both vehicles (and a bonus battle will be used up for both aircraft and tanks in this case).

If you played a battle and received 0 mission points and 0 base RP with a respective vehicle, for example a helicopter in Ground Realistic Battles where the battle ended and you had no time to do anything, you will not receive any research bonus to helicopters. The research bonus battle for helicopters also won’t be spent, so you’ll not waste one of the 5 bonus battles for helicopters in this case.

If you played a battle and received a bonus, this is shown in the My results screen under “Vehicle research bonus” as well as in the Battles section in the messages area.

[h3]F.A.Q. (open spoiler)[/h3]

Here are some relevant scenarios and answers. Please feel free to ask any additional questions you might have.

Q: I only play one nation, the USSR. I have a max rank vehicle unlocked and purchased in Aviation, Army and Helicopters for this nation, but have nothing unlocked in any other nation. How many bonuses will I get?
A: For each nation, you’ll get 5 battles with a bonus every day. For example, 5 for American aviation, 5 for the American army tree and 5 for American helicopters and so on for each nation.

Q: I only play the USA, and I have every single plane in the USA tree researched and purchased, but only up to rank IV for their ground tree. Will I get bonuses for the ground tree?
A: Not in this case. Bonuses only apply to the same type of vehicle in other research trees. So if you have a “top” aircraft, you will receive bonuses to aircraft research in other nations, but not ground vehicles.

Q: If I don’t plan to play with a vehicle from a nation that has a research bonus available, can I disable the display of the bonus icons?
A: Yes. You can toggle the display of the bonus icon in the research branch using the “Show remaining bonus in headers” option.


Q: If a new vehicle is added to the only tree where I have a “top” vehicle, and mine is no longer “top”, will I lose the bonus?
A: Yes, the bonus status will be updated when new a new vehicle is introduced. If you have only one “top” vehicle of only one nation, and the new vehicle becomes the new “top” of the sub-branch you are researching, then the bonus will disappear until you purchase the new vehicle or get another “top” vehicle.

Q: If a new “top” vehicle is added to the tree, will I be able to research it using the bonus?
A: Yes, you can, but not right away. While the vehicle is considered new the bonus will not apply to it.

CM Covert Disclosures No.3: Updates from Smin

Welcome to the next edition of covert disclosures where we aim to bring you up to speed with some of the goings on behind the scenes outside of our normal scheduled news.

[h2]Vehicle reports[/h2]

With the release of the Dance of Dragons major update two weeks ago, the devs have been hard at work addressing many of your reports and going through all the feedback raised. We would like to cover a few of those subjects to begin with and give you some news from the development frontlines.

With the mighty J-10A arriving, many of you requested that we consider the PL-8B missile for this aircraft. We didn’t give the aircraft this missile as it may be a bit of a strong combination given the missile’s potential performance in conjunction with the platform, so PL-5E II was a more logical and balanced starting point. It may be given further consideration depending also on how the J-10A is performing in the current meta. At this time however we can’t say for sure it will come to the game at any point soon, just to be clear. We just wanted to keep you updated that we are indeed aware of the missile and are looking into it.

Staying on the subject of the J-10, its drop tanks were also a point raised, as the current wing tanks occupy a missile pylon. The developers are indeed aware of this and we do have alternative tanks in the pipeline. So work is indeed underway.



On the F-111C, the developers are studying further reports into GBU-15 and shoulder mounted Sidewinder options for this aircraft. You may have spotted some of these in the early dev blog renders, however they were not quite confirmed and complete, which is why we always aim to stress that dev blogs themselves are very much a window into in-development matters and the final outcome of a vehicle can always change even from that moment. Lastly we are also taking a look into evidence that showed F-111Cs potentially with the additional wing mounted bomb racks found on the F-111A. Thanks for all your reports and details on these matters!



[h2]Recent bug fixes[/h2]
The star of the current Battlepass, the Sholef V.1 has had its gun designation corrected to the M845 along with its appropriate performance, accurately representing the L/45 cannon we have modelled and present on Sholef V.1. We know this was raised by many of you and we would like to thank you for the reports made on this!



The most recent major also brought the JANUS commander sight for the VBM Freccia. Its missing Thermal imagery has now been added and the vehicle has several other fixes on the way. Such as its top speed, a correction to its smoke calibre and the number of missiles possible to store in the hull.



Lastly for ground forces, we would like to touch on the subject of the M735 shell briefly. Since we changed this round to the LO formula last year there have been many requests to re-evaluate the changes and review extra source materials to ensure its performance is correct. Whilst we can’t at this time specify the outcome, we can let you know the devs will be taking a look into the shell again and we do have some additional materials to evaluate and take into consideration.

Onto aircraft, the F-15C Baz Meshupar was a bit of an exception to the later versions of F-15s (such as F-15C and F-15J(M)), in that its radar differed by being an APG-63 PSP, thus lacking TWS. After reviewing some of the reports submitted and conducting further investigations of our own, the developers have decided to provide the aircraft with a TWS updated radar. This should bring the aircraft more into line with its counterparts and drastically improve its AMRAAM handling capabilities.



[h2]Next event vehicle[/h2]
We’re nearing the end of the year now, and there are interesting times ahead. For now though, the next event vehicle after HMS Barham will be a ground vehicle for Germany. Keep an eye on the news for the announcement for this event/vehicle!

[h2]Stats![/h2]
Here is some more interesting stats from the game in the past 30 days that we’ve pulled from the production server. For future stats, we want to do some interesting comparisons to make it more exciting! Stats date range is from 22.08 - 20.09.

  • Highest number of ground vehicle kills at once with the Pe-8’s FAB-5000 bomb and Lancaster B Mk I and B Mk III 12,000 lb bomb in Ground Realistic Battles in the past 30 days

There were 11 enemy kills (not including accidental teamkills) at once with each of the Pe-8’s FAB-5000 and Lancaster B Mk I and B Mk III’s 12,000 lb bomb. 11 kills is great!

  • Number of times there were number of kills per battle by a single player: 10 or above, 13 or above, 15 or above, 17 or above, 20 or above in each of Ground AB, RB and SB in the past 30 days

Hundreds of thousands of times there were 10+ kills in Ground battles over a month period. Only a few thousand get over 20 kills, and in Ground SB, there were two times with over 20+ kills. Nice work!


  • Number of times that torpedoes destroyed the Battleship class in all naval battle modes in the past 30 days
40,499 ships classed as a “Battleship” in-game were destroyed by torpedoes in the past month in all naval modes. Nice!

  • Number of successful landings in total in Air RB, AB and SB battles with “Severe Damage” in the past 30 days

In the past month, many players resisted crashing their aircraft and made it back to the airfield to repair. Players whose aircraft had “Severe Damage” made 410,049 successful landings in Air AB, 119,978 in Air RB and 138,033 in Air SB. That’s 668,060 in total across all modes. Impressive numbers!

[h2]New training missions for ground vehicles[/h2]
The devs have created some new training missions for ground vehicles, similar to how the tutorials for testing aircraft weapons such as AAMs or AGMs work. There’s 5 missions here for binoculars, laser rangefinder, SAM with IR homing head with uncaging
SAM with IR homing head without uncaging and SAM with multi-channel optical homing head.




These tutorials are planned to be added to the game before the next major update and will provide new and experienced players alike with a proper tutorial area for all types of ground weapon systems and other functions in the game. Keep an eye out for this coming soon!

[h3]More tank sights [/h3]
As mentioned in the tank reticle blog, the devs will be adding more tank reticles to the game over time. Some of the first ones that were added to the game last week are for the Challenger 2, Leclerc, Ariete and Merkava.



[h2]The next major[/h2]
Dance of Dragons just released and the devs are already working hard on the next major update. Check out the below on some of the things in store for the next major update and beyond.

[h3]US SPAA plans, plus Skink and Ram II changes [/h3]
Recently, we’ve seen requests for new SPAA additions to the US ground forces tree at the lower to mid ranks. If all goes to plan and nothing prevents us, in the next major update, the devs will start to remedy this situation by adding a new, domestic SPAA for the US (more information on this one will be revealed closer to the next major) as well as the addition of the Canadian Skink.



Since the Skink is already in the British tree, and for a long time now there have been requests for the M4A5 (Ram II) to go to the British tree, the devs will also add the Ram II to the British tree as a premium as well. Both trees will keep both vehicles too, meaning both nations will now simply have both vehicles. The addition of these vehicles doesn’t affect any current or future plans for SPAA and other vehicles for these nations — this is simply an “extra bonus” on-top.



[h3]New test flight for aircraft[/h3]
The devs are also working on an overall revamp of aircraft test flights. Those of you who have been here since the early days probably know that aircraft test flight maps haven't changed much, but we do have a lot of them. The new test flights are still very early on, but we can say they will follow a similar sort of approach as what tank test drives offer, with a range of practical features like targets scaled for BR, selectable spawn positions, re-spawning targets and perhaps some other elements too that are still being discussed.

[h3]HE fuze control[/h3]
Also in the works is a new mechanic for switching HE shells operating mode. This primarily is for shells with a Radio or Remote fuse activation, as it allows you to disable this function and use them as a standard HE shell with a contact fuse. A cyclic switch function will allow you to toggle which mode your shell will have.

[h3]Ship gameplay improvements[/h3]
Naval warfare will also see some improvements in gameplay interface features. The team are currently working on a range of features, such as a new aiming sight for missiles as well as improvements to the prediction markers. Some of these will make it for the next major, and some for the future, all depending on how development goes.

[h3]New visual effects[/h3]
The next major will have a plethora of visual effect updates that we’ll likely cover close to the major. However, one exciting addition that we wanted to point out is LERX Vapor for jet aircraft! Take a look at some of the screenshots of this effect, please bear in mind that this is still Work-In-Progress and is subject to change.
