PoE 3.12 release date: everything we know about the Path of Exile Heist expansion

Path of Exile: Heist isn't far off and for dug in fans there's plenty on the way in PoE 3.12. Introducing the Heist League, 13 new NPCs, Trinkets, Alternate Quality Gems, Replica Unique Items, Experimented Base Types, New Unique Items, New Spells, New Curses, New Steel Skills, and reworks to each of these game areas.

The Heist expansion involves a new location and a band of thieves who help you plan and execute heists, assisting you with tasks such as lockpicking, transportation, and disarming traps. These merry rogues aid you in your robbery of artifacts and the more you steal, the closer you get to taking on Grand Heists by selling them at The Rogue Harbour. Eventually you can collate all your know how and assemble the best rogues to infiltrate a large facility for greater rewards.

The heist itself involves robbing a guarded facility while remaining unseen to secure a vault of goodies at the end. Heist is an ambitious expansion, as you can see from the extensive list of content and changes arriving, but the Path of Exile Heist release date isn't far off, so here's everything that's coming to the next expansion.

Grinding Gear Games borrows from a variety of sources of inspiration for Path of Exile's various leagues. The previous Harvest update takes some cues from Stardew Valley, whereas Pokemon and old flash games have influenced others in the past. The idea behind the most recent PoE league, heist, though, comes from Steven Soderbergh film Ocean's 11.

GGG co-founder Chris Wilson tells us that he and the studio's technical director Jonathan Rogers were mulling over the theme of the upcoming expansion back in February. Stumped, they turned to Netflix. "We get to a car racing movie and think, can we do a league about this?" Wilson recalls. "We seriously talked about what it means to have a vehicle that you're building, Path of Exile, and how that would work - but that didn't pan out. Eventually, we got to Ocean's 11, or some other heist movie on the list, and thought, well, that would be cool.

"Instantly, you know exactly what that league is going to be. You're going to rob some places, it's going to be exciting, and there's going to be guards. There's going to be bypassing security and planning around a big table with maps pulled out over it with other people pouring over it."

In addition to their usual content, these supporter packs will contain a new type of Character Effect which we've wanted to try out for a long time.

These character effects start with a minimal visual effect which charges up as you slay monsters. There are six visual phases until it's at its full glorious effect. After a short time without killing monsters, it will phase back down to its original look.

We've prepared a preview of one of them today. Watch the video below!
