Dear Stellar Settlers 👋

It's that time of the year again - the Steam Next Fest February edition! We're so excited to bring you an updated, improved version of Planetiles with additions and tweaks based on your feedback. Steam Next Fest 2024 is happening between 5th and 12th February and during that time, you will be able to check out some of the most exciting upcoming indie games demos.

One big demo update is the Photomode. It was already presented in our Devlog #6 so check it out and prepare to shoot some stellar photos of your settlements: available here.

[h3]Planetiles demo v3.0[/h3]

Planetiles demo v3.0 will be available to public on Feb 5th, however if you'd like to receive earlier access, join our Discord and drop your request in Planetiles channel.



The new demo is getting improvements all around the place and to briefly introduce you to changes ahead of the official patch notes, here is a short list:

• Added Settings in the menu
  
• Added the Photomode with first person POV to explore the planet
  
• Improved presentation and visuals during cataclysms
  
• Improved technology screen UI and perks effects
  
• Updated missions and structures stats
  
• Minor bug fixes and performance optimisations
  

[h3]New Steam capsule and key art[/h3]

As you probably noticed already, Planetiles got a new capsule and key art to better showcase the game's main gameplay feature - placing tiles and chunks on the spherical, planetary grid. We shared the new vs old comparison on Reddit, Discord and Twitter and the results are quite overwhelming with ~90% prefering the new capsule!

We're getting ready for Steam Next Fest and can't wait to showcase Planetiles demo v3.0 with you, our mighty community! While adding some final polish to new demo, we're also working on some other stuff that we'd like to briefly tease below 👇

[h3]New demo v3.0 for Steam Next Fest[/h3]
The most important part of today's announcement is that Planetiles is getting a new demo with added features and improvements. It will be the final shape of the demo and will stay available to public also after Next Fest, just to gather more feedback and engage with fans more.

To sum it up in a couple of words - missions balancing, photomode, UI, leaderboards and menus are being updated and we're also adding settings. New demo should be up a day before Next Fest starts on February 5th so keep your eyes peeled and follow Planetiles on X/Twitter.

Greetings space settlers 🖖

We're excited to announce another game feature coming to Planetiles - the Photomode! 📸

In this mode, players will be able to explore their settlements in the first person view, shining a whole new light on your creations. The more developed structures, the better they will look in the lens of your space camera, a gadget packed with snappy settings to fiddle with:

• Zoom - a classic photomode feature, zoom in and out
  
• Free view camera - move freely over the planet and set your camera at any place
  
• Focus distance - adjust the minimum focus distance to shoot objects closer to the camera
  
• Remove UI - remove all UI elements on the screen to capture a photo/screenshot
  
• Aperture - control the amount of light passing through camera lens and play with colors
  
• Tilt & Height settings - move your camera up & down or tilt it to play with gravity

First of all, we hope you had wonderful Christmas and 2024's Eve! Since Planetiles now entered its release year, we continue with the devlogs series to give you a better understanding of how our upcoming tile-based citybuilder works. We already showcased first cataclysm type - Volcano Eruption, that you can learn more about here.

[h3]How Solar Storm works?[/h3]



Solar Storm is one of the cataclysms available in Planetiles. A cataclysm is the event that makes your journey through the stars a bit harder and occurs frequently - with every 500 points you get to choose 1 pair of 'buffs' and 'nerfs' - however this 500 points threshold can be affected by different features. Once Solar Storm hits, satellites and structures are affected with electric discharge, structures features being turned off for the duration of the cataclysm.

Just as with every other cataclysm, the Solar Storm is affected by techonologies (perks) that can shorten its time, making it less destructive to structures.



[h3]How to deal with Solar Storms?[/h3]

There are a couple of ways you can deal with Solar Storms - the easiest one is to choose Solar Storm to occur in the earliest stage of your run. At the beginning, you have almost no structures available so the effect of the cataclysm is greatly reduced.

Later on, things get tricky as you're maximising the score and count every tile twice. If Solar Storms occurs around the time you have due to the structures features being unavailable.
