Welcome to Bylina and The Land of Towns

Step closer, young one, let me tell you about Bylina and the Land of Towns.

Most fantasy worlds introduce themselves with knights, prophecies, and ancient evils. Bylina doesn’t. From the first moment you enter our game, you will find that something feels odd, the game will feel familiar, but perhaps not in the way that you expect. This isn’t a land of shining armor and neatly explained magic, it is a place shaped by strange habits, half-forgotten rules, and fairy-tale logic that doesn’t stop to justify itself.

The world you step into is called the Land of Towns. People live here, trade here, argue, travel, and survive, all alongside magical beings, some are helpful, others...less so. Magic exists here, but not as spells and fireballs cast with chants; it is closer to willpower and spirit, magic in Bylina is something that is felt rather than taught.

There are other peculiarities in The Land of Towns, for example, there are no horses in this world - never were, and never will be - so oxen pull carts. Towns stand closer together, rivers are lifelines, and lighthouses pass messages from one city to the next.

When it comes to the deities, the people of the Land of Towns know there is a god (sometimes referred to in-game as a Lord), they know he created the giants, that the giants shaped the earth, and that bogatyrs were given their strength. Everything beyond that is… unclear, some bits of information somehow makes its way to the Land of Towns from the Thrice-Ninth Kingdom, many rules are simply accepted, and some questions are never answered at all. Not because the answers don’t exist, but because this world doesn’t rush to explain itself.

The Thrice-Ninth Kingdom is a part of Slavic Folklore; we’ll go into this in a future article.

Something that we want to make clear right away, this is not a historical reconstruction, nor is it a textbook of mythology. It’s a fairy tale that grew up among real people, real places, and real fears, a story that tried to be serious, failed, and decided to be funnier and more honest towards who we are. In the Land of Towns, wonder often arrives first with a smile…and only later reminds you how close danger has always been.

With that, we welcome you to Bylina and the Land of Towns! Just remember, as with everything here, you are more than welcome to stay, but you will not always be given an explanation of what happens around you!
