Q&A recap #02 - Diving Into Fluid Combat and Elemental Depths

[p]We’re back with another round of our live Q&A sessions on Discord, where the dev team behind Fading Echo hangs out with the community, answers your burning questions, and shares insights into how the game is shaping up behind the scenes.[/p][p]Our second session took place on September 11, and this time, Charles and Rémi from the design and tech teams took the stage.[/p][p]If you missed it, here’s a recap of some of the most exciting questions and answers from the event.[/p][p]And don’t forget: more Q&A sessions are on the way, so if you want to be part of the next one, make sure to hop into our Discord![/p][p]Let’s get into it 👇[/p][p][/p]
👨‍💻 Meet the Design & Tech Minds Behind Fading Echo
[p]Charles (Lead Game Designer):[/p][p]Hey everyone! Glad to be here! I'm Charles, Lead Game Designer on Fading Echo. I work with the rest of the design team on all gameplay mechanics and basically anything you'll do in the game![/p][p]Rémi (Technical Director):[/p][p]Hey everyone! Glad to be here with you! I’m Rémi, Technical Director at New Tales. Together with the tech team, we strive to bring game designers’ wildest ideas to life.[/p]
[p][/p]
💧 Why Water? Rethinking Elemental Combat
[p]Water is usually seen as defensive or supportive in games. What made you decide to build an aggressive combat system around it?[/p]
[p]We wanted the game to feel fluid, literally and mechanically. The combat pushes players to move constantly, which naturally led us toward an aggressive playstyle.[/p][p]While water is often seen as passive or defensive in other games, we decided to flip that on its head. We’re using properties like movement and state changes (liquid, vapor, etc.) to keep things dynamic.[/p][p]There are still some defensive abilities of course, but even if you're wielding water, you're on the offensive more often than not. And while water is our focus, we’re not limiting ourselves to just that element.[/p][p][/p]
[p][/p]
🔁 Everything Reacts—So Should You
[p]The game emphasizes elemental reactions, even the enemies are elemental. Will we have to adjust our playstyles accordingly?[/p]
[p]Exactly. That’s a core part of the experience.[/p][p]The same water spell can behave very differently depending on what element it comes into contact with. For example, using water against a water-based enemy won’t be very effective, so you’ll need to adapt your approach.[/p][p]As the player, you’re constantly pushed to experiment and change tactics. There’s no one-size-fits-all strategy here.[/p]
[p][/p]
🧪 How Deep Do the Elemental Reactions Go?
[p]Are reactions just basic combinations like fire + water = steam, or are there deeper chains involved?[/p]
[p]Great question. We built our system to support a ton of element types and a wide variety of interactions.[/p][p]This lets us create some really cool chained effects and think more than just “fire meets water.” But we’re also careful to maintain clarity: no matter how complex things get under the hood, players should be able to understand what’s happening on-screen.[/p]
[p][/p]
🎮 Your Playstyle, Your Choice
[p]Is there a “right” playstyle, or can players approach combat in different ways?[/p]
[p]Totally up to you. While you’ll always be dealing with fluids and elemental mechanics, how you use them is up to your playstyle.[/p][p]For example, if you enjoy shapeshifting, you can use water-based transformations to coat enemies and set up reactions. If you’re more strategic, you might lean into positioning and arena manipulation.[/p][p]And yes, the game will feature multiple difficulty modes, whether you want a hardcore challenge or a smoother ride to enjoy the story, the choice is yours.[/p]
[p][/p]
🦖 Combat Showcase: Chicken-Dinos and Tactical Risk
[p]Do you have any gameplay clips to share?[/p]
[p]We showed off a short combat clip during the session! It features enemies we’ve nicknamed “chicken-inspired dinosaurs” that rush toward you and leave a hazardous fluid trail behind.[/p][p]The cool part? You can choose to spare certain enemies to use them strategically—keeping some alive longer can help you take out others… if you’re willing to take the risk.[/p][p][/p]
[p]Sometimes it’s not even about the elements, just physics.[/p]
[p]Exactly. In some situations, it’s more efficient to just push enemies out of the arena. We want you to take full advantage of the combat environments—not just rely on elemental power.[/p][p][/p]
[p][/p]
🌱 Character Progression: Perk Upgrades
[p]Are there upgrade systems for spells and abilities?[/p]
[p]Absolutely! We have a system called Perks, which lets you customize and upgrade your character.[/p][p]You can equip multiple Perks that enhance abilities, tweak your combat style, or unlock new effects. It’s a flexible system designed to support a wide range of builds and preferences.[/p][p][/p]
[p][/p][p]That wraps up our second Q&A recap! Huge thanks to Charles and Rémi for sharing their insights, and to our amazing community for the great questions![/p][p]Until then, keep your spells sharp and stay hydrated.[/p][p][/p]
🌊 Flow with us
[p]✨ Wishlist Fading Echo[/p][p]Steam | Epic Games Store | PlayStation Store | Xbox Store[/p][p][/p][p]💬 Join the Echoverse on Discord[/p][p]And follow the adventure:[/p][p]YouTube | TikTok | Instagram[/p][p][/p][p]📝 Sign Up for the Alpha Playtest [/p][p]https://fadingecho.firstlook.gg/signup/playtest[/p]

Known Issues in the Fading Echo Closed Alpha

[p]Hey everyone,[/p][p]The Closed Alpha for Fading Echo is now live on Steam and we couldn’t be more excited (and a little nervous) to finally have you in the game![/p][p]This is a very early look at what we’re building, raw in places, unfinished in others, but a major milestone in the journey toward full release. With your help, we’ll be able to pinpoint what’s working, what’s not, and what needs more love moving forward.[/p][p]Below is a transparent list of known bugs, incomplete features, and other quirks you might run into.[/p][p][/p]
🎬 Cutscenes
[p]Some story moments are presented as early animated storyboard cutscenes. You’ll hear final voice acting, but there’s no music, and the visuals are rough like you’re in the booth with the actor and audio engineer watching a live sketch. These will be polished in future builds, but for now, they help carry the narrative forward.[/p]
 • [p]One exchange with Rahne currently has no voiceover ![/p]
[p][/p]
⚔️ Combat
[p]Combat can get a little wild especially with all the fluids and effects flying around. That chaos is partially intended, but we’re still refining where the fun ends and confusion begins.[/p][p]We’re especially looking for feedback on:[/p]
 • [p]Combat clarity: When does it feel readable vs. overwhelming?[/p]
 • [p]Tactical depth: How does the evolving endgame system feel in its current state?[/p]
 • [p]Difficulty & deaths: Are deaths frustrating? Do they feel fair or unavoidable?[/p]
[p]Known bugs affecting combat:[/p]
 • [p]Falling and dying at the same time can softlock the player.[/p]
 • [p]If you jump during the dying animation, you may respawn in an unnatural position.[/p]
[p][/p]
🌍 The World
[p]You’ll explore parts of the world that are already in solid shape, but some areas like the later zones in the Volcano, other islands, and the Bastion exterior are visually unfinished. Expect placeholder textures or blocked-out environments in those spots.[/p][p][/p]
🧠 Perk Screen
[p]Our perk system is in, but the perk screen UI is still using placeholder assets. It’ll get its visual upgrade in the next alpha build, we were just a few weeks short this time around. 😊[/p][p][/p]
🎮 Controls & Controller Notes
• [p]No key remapping yet: It’s on the roadmap, but not in this build. To get the best experience, we recommend playing with a controller.[/p]
 • [p]Steam Form movement: There’s a known issue where this form can automatically propel the player forward, making it feel like you’ve lost control.[/p]
 • [p]Controller audio bug (PS5/Switch): Due to a known Steam issue affecting many indie games, sound may be routed to controller vibrations.[/p]
 • [p]When pausing the game while haptic feedback is active, the haptics continue running.[/p]
[p][/p]
🚧 Performance & Stability
[p]This alpha hasn’t been fully optimized yet, so you may notice:[/p]
 • [p]Performance dips in certain arenas[/p]
 • [p]Crashes on lower-end hardware[/p]
 • [p]Game can crash if you kill too many ennemies at the same time (it means you did a great job tho 😅)[/p]
 • [p]On rare occasions, the game may crash on first launch from Steam.[/p][p]➤ This issue only occurs once (and only sometimes). The game launches fine every time after the initial crash[/p]
 • [p]On AMD graphics cards, some visual elements may not display correctly : One’s hair might not appear at all. We're investigating and will address this in a future update.[/p]

Devlog #7 – Our first Closed Alpha is around the corner

[p]Hey Legends,[/p][p]We were supposed to introduce you to some of the wild things lurking in the Echoverse this month: the monstrous creatures, twisted by Corruption and warped by decaying Immanence. You know, the stuff that crawls through the cracks in your dreams.[/p][p]And don’t worry, they’re still coming. Just… not today.[/p][p]Because something way scarier is happening. In just a few days, we’re opening the gates to Fading Echo’s very first Closed Alpha. It’s early. It’s raw. It’s real. And if we’re being completely honest… we’re a little (no, totally) terrified.[/p][p]This is the first time we’re letting you, the community, step into the Echoverse and actually play the game we’ve been building. That’s a huge milestone, and one that comes with a lot of vulnerability. This isn’t a polished vertical slice or a show-floor demo. This is the scaffolding, the bones, the messy middle.[/p][p]It’s a peek behind the curtain of a still-growing world… We’re incredibly proud (and anxious) to share it with you.
[/p][p][/p]
What’s in the Alpha?
[p]Let’s keep it real, this is a work-in-progress. Like, seriously WIP. Here's what you'll find:[/p]
 • [p]Cutscenes: Story moments are told through raw, animated storyboard-style sequences. Final voice acting is in, but music and polish are still on the way. It’s basically like sitting in the sound booth with us and watching the actor and engineer work it out live.[/p]
 • [p]Combat: Fast, fluid… and sometimes a bit chaotic. The elemental fluid system is meant to get messy, but we need your help figuring out when it’s fun chaos vs just confusing.[/p]
 • [p]Worldbuilding: Later zones (parts of the Volcano, other islands, and the Bastion exterior) are still under visual construction.[/p]
 • [p]Perk Screen: Still temporary. We were just a few weeks short… it’ll get its glow-up next alpha.[/p]
 • [p]Performance: Expect some framerate drops and the occasional crash, especially in certain arenas or on lower-end setups. Optimization is ongoing.[/p]
 • [p]Controls: No remapping yet even if we know that matters. For now, we’re eager to hear how the default layout feels.[/p]
[p][/p]
What We’re Looking For
[p]This alpha isn’t just a showcase, it’s a conversation. We’re inviting you in to help shape what comes next. Here's where your feedback matters most:[/p]
 • [p]Combat feel & difficulty – Is it fun? Too easy? Too punishing? How often are you dying, and why?[/p]
 • [p]Elemental fluid system – Does it click? Does it feel fresh?[/p]
 • [p]Systems – Mana leeching, immunities, tactical layers etc… do they make sense? What’s working? What’s not?[/p]
 • [p]Story – Are you reading, listening, skipping? Does it draw you in or leave you lost?[/p]
 • [p]Characters – What’s your take on One’s Hair? (Yes, it’s important.) What’s your vibe check on Vellum across realities?[/p]
 • [p]Pacing – Are you enjoying the back-and-forth between dialogue, combat, and exploration? Or do you wish for more quiet space?[/p]
 • [p]Accessibility – Is anything missing that could improve your experience?[/p]
[p][/p]
Why This Matters
[p]This alpha isn’t about polish, it’s about heart. We’re a small indie team making something big, weird, and personal. We’re testing the soul of Fading Echo… Its tone, systems, characters, and world. It’s early, it’s raw, and yeah, it’s scary. But that’s what makes it real.[/p][p]And you, your curiosity, your feedback, your presence, are a critical part of that process. So thank you for stepping into the Echoverse with us: nerves, bugs, blood and all. We can’t wait to hear what you think. And yes, next devlog, the monsters will have their moment.[/p][p]Until then… Stay Aetheric,

Behind the Music of Fading Echo

[p]Hey everyone![/p][p]Today, we’re taking you behind the scenes of Fading Echo’s music system to talk about something we’re really excited about: interactive music.[/p][p]If you've ever noticed how the music in a game seems to shift perfectly with your actions ramping up during combat or softening as you explore, that’s no accident. Let’s break down how we’re doing it in Fading Echo, and why it matters.[/p][p][/p]
🎧 What Is “Layering” in Game Music?
[p]Layering is a technique where a single piece of music is broken into multiple parts called layers that can be turned on or off depending on what’s happening in the game.[/p][p]Instead of switching between completely different tracks (which can feel jarring), layering allows one core composition to adapt dynamically, giving players a seamless and immersive audio experience.[/p][p][/p]
🛠️ How Does It Work?
[p]We start by splitting the music into layers. These can include:[/p]
 • [p]🎻 A main melody – the theme or emotional core[/p]
 • [p]🎸 A rhythmic base – drums, bass, or a steady groove[/p]
 • [p]🌫️ Ambient textures – pads, drones, or atmospheric sounds[/p]
 • [p]🥁 Intensity elements – epic percussion, brass, choirs[/p]
[p](Here's an example of our music editing in action. Yes, it’s not the most visual thing in the world, but trust us, it sounds awesome. 😅)[/p][p][/p][p]In Fading Echo, we separate interactive music into two main categories: Exploration and Combat. Each category uses its own set of conditions to determine how the music should evolve.[/p][p]When specific gameplay conditions are triggered like starting a fight, or discovering something important, the system automatically modifies the active music layers. This allows us to guide your emotional experience in real time: tension builds, or things calm down, all depending on what you're doing.[/p][p]Because the layers are all rhythmically and harmonically aligned, the transitions feel seamless and natural.[/p][p][/p]
🎮 A Concrete Example
[p]Imagine you're deep in a tense moment in Fading Echo, and your health starts to drop.[/p][p]As your life gets lower, the music automatically begins to shift, a subtle tension layer fades in, adding unease.[/p][p]The lower your health, the more the music leans into that danger, amplifying the pressure you’re already feeling through gameplay.[/p][p][/p]
We have a little surprise 🎁
[p]If you want to hear what Fading Echo's music actually sounds like, we’ve put together a short YouTube video with a few in-game music examples.[/p][p]
