You might think innkeeping is easy, and that you can use your spells to breeze through all of the challenges. Unfortunately, not everything can be solved with a wave of your wand.

Today, I’m introducing you to a powerful weapon that can influence people’s minds. No, it’s not a spell. It’s the art of conversation.



Non-magic folks have mastered the art of conversation for centuries. It is a vital skill that can save you gold, gather information, recruit talent, build connections, and most importantly, persuade your rivals to make key decisions that can impact the world.

A conversation is only meaningful when it has a topic, as the topic defines a goal. By conversing on the same topic, you gain experience, and when you level up, you unlock skillful cards that allow you to outwit even the toughest opponent.



Let’s go over some of the most important topics you need to master, and the rewards you can earn from them.



[h2]Negotiation[/h2]

You will find yourself trading goods from time to time with local farmers or merchants. Farmers are fine. But merchants are the worst to deal with, as they trade for a living and excel at the art of negotiation. In Negotiation, you aim to secure a good discount rate, which applies whether you are buying or selling items. A higher discount rate means better prices, no matter which side of the trade you are on. Neglect this, and your purse will empty faster than you think.



[h2]Inquiry[/h2]

The practice of Inquiry is all about collecting useful intel on the people you deal with. Information such as their specialties and skills, favorite food and items, and who their friends are can inform you how to befriend them and how helpful they can be. Without this intel, you are flying blind. Nothing feels worse than giving a gift to someone who doesn’t even like it.



[h2]Employment[/h2]

To scale up your operations, you need to hire talent. Convincing local cooks to join you isn’t too difficult, but when your inn starts attracting royalty, you’ll need to employ the best chefs on the continent. The back-and-forth salary with top chefs will be, let’s say, an interesting conversation to be had.

[h2]Attraction[/h2]

To be a successful innkeeper, it is a given that you must be likable, or at least, pretend to be likable. Mastering the art of attraction gives you a powerful tool to quickly win people’s hearts. Moreover, you’ll have a much easier time developing romantic relationships. If that’s not motivation, I don’t know what is!



[h2]Battle[/h2]

Yes, a battle of words! Exciting, isn’t it? In many situations, you will have to engage in a debate battle with your opponent that you cannot afford to lose. When you get really good at it, you can participate in local tournaments where you will earn high honor for being the best debater in the world.

Magic Inn places you in the role of a business owner in a Harry-Potter-inspired magic fantasy world.

Before anything else, your inn is your business. You'll manage many aspects of the inn, such as staffing, menu, ingredients, reservations, and rooms. You have full freedom to customize your inn to your heart's content—we won’t confine your creativity to grids. Whether you aim for the glory of a 5-star inn or simply enjoy serving each customer your way, the choice is yours.

[h2]Power of Networking[/h2]

You can't thrive in this world without friends. The bad news is you don't have the superpowers of foraging, farming, and crafting. The good news is that your network of farmers, herbalists, adventurers, builders, and even bandits can provide what you need. You'll need to manage these relationships. Invite them over for a meal, give gifts regularly, help them with favors, and host parties to build and maintain strong connections.



[h2]Strategic Conversation[/h2]

Often, the most important battles are not fought with swords or wands, but with words. Engage in conversations with characters in the form of card battles to attract them, negotiate prices, gather intelligence, or persuade them to do the right things. As a peace-keeping wizard who never condones violence, you'll wield the power of words to achieve your goals.



[h2]Magic Fantasy[/h2]

We admit it—we're huge Harry Potter fans. Imagine building your own Hogwarts from scratch. That's the idea that inspired us, and you can create your own magical haven in Magic Inn. With paintings of lively characters, floating candles, glow-in-the-dark vines, and more magical items in your inventory, you can build your own great hall.



Plus, you can cast spells and brew potions—your typical wizardry activities.





In short, you are a wizard with a mission, and innkeeping is just your disguise. The magical world is filled with secrets, schemes, and ambitions. But you'll also meet people with compassion, aspiration, and loyalty. Together, you'll become a formidable force based in the Magic Inn, working towards the greater good of the Kingdom.

Hello everyone! This is Xiao from Purpledoor Studios, and welcome to our first Devlog of Magic Inn! Today, I’m thrilled to introduce the basics of innkeeping to all our future innkeepers and wizards. Grab your wands and aprons; it’s going to be a magical ride!



Any proper inn should serve decent food; otherwise, we’d have hungry travelers yelling at us. In Magic Inn, you need to take up cooking, in the form of mini-games, to serve food orders from guests. The quality of food relies on both your cooking skill and how well you complete the cooking mini-games.



Each guest only has limited patience, so you will need to hurry up.



When the inn gets crowded, you could employ chefs and servers to scale up the operation.
You can also learn new magic spells or hire wizards to streamline operations.





You know what’s worse than not having food at an inn? Yep, you guessed it: not having alcohol.
In Magic Inn, preparing drinks is very similar to preparing food. You also complete a different set of mini-games where the result determines the drink quality, and you can hire servers to help out.



We also want to add a special mechanism to drinking: a drunk meter. As you improve your conversation skills, you can recommend more drinks to guests, which fills up their drunk meter. When the meter is full, the guest will pass out, and you will lose the income. But if the drunk meter is near full, it gives you an advantage in conversation, where they will be more likely to spill their guts and say yes to your requests.





Compared to dining and drinking, rooms should be the most profitable part of the business.
The price of a room is determined by its value. You can add expensive furniture, beautiful decorations, and rare gems to increase the room value. Then you just sit back and relax while watching the cash roll in.



More importantly, at night when the inn is closed, you can engage in conversation with guests who stay over. These conversations could turn into meaningful relationships that will benefit you in the long run. We will get into that part in a future Devlog.
