Progress Report #89: November 2023

How's it going? Been a week and a few days since we apprised you with the latest progress we've been making towards the upcoming update, so without adieu, lets remedy that, shall we?

As always, we started from the basics- NPCs. No new map is truly complete without denizens to populate it and since Bounty Hunts are the highlights this time, we brought the baddies to life first. They now roam the new maps doing their best to avoid capture, something Caly will have to remedy. One such guy being- Tuko Sins.


Tuko Sins has full character art, and part of his battle art for if Caly fails to bring in her bounty. One should always be careful when messing with a desperate criminal on the run. You never know what he might have hidden in his flesh pockets while skulking the unfriendly hall maps.

Speaking of maps, we designed them in tandem with NPC development so we could create the right aesthetic look. Check this concept blueprint out:

And we planned them with longevity in mind. Locations will function not only for the first Bounty Hunting mission(s) but could play a role in future main or side quest content. So we're ensuring it is a detailed map with interactable elements for clues and objectives, as well as other hidden details that will increase game-play potential.

Additionally, outline of the third quest in the set has also been created. It's still just a first draft but we're speeding through the planning phase to tighten things up and make sure that even if other people are hunting for the targets in the bounty hunting quests, Caly will always be the focal point.

Finally..- oh boy, seems like mapping was hot stuff all around this week. Even our coder dove deep into it installing technical uplifts, chief among them- parallax mapping system overhauls for smoother loading and zone transitions. Apparently, with each new update map additions, it is essentially becoming a requirement to deploy optimizations to manage load timings.

And so we finally reach the highlight of Spooktoober. Wishing all of our fans a wickedly wonderful Halloween and may your bags be filled with treats, not tricks 👻🕯🎃

Speaking of highlights, we have some to share about VoidBound as well, so lets get into it!

Asset finalization work for the upcoming patch has finally begun. With concept work now green lit by all devs, it's time to the add the final colors and start sequencing the CGs in order. A more "all hands on" approach is being employed this time to significantly cut down last minute delays and/or chaotic reworks. Though.. only time will tell if it worked or not ;)

The artist has also started to review and update their art style to make Caly shine that little bit extra. You see, Caly has always been eye raising thick but still lacked that athletic charm- something our artist intends to remedy by updating her features in respect to her skill set and physical capabilities.

Realism and Fantasy meet midway. Can't wait to showcase the final union~

Meanwhile, writers continue the work on fleshing out the core of the next update: The Bounties. New targets, new zones and new music has been on the work table for some time now, and it was no different this week either. We're told that with the CG concept work largely finalized, the focus has now shifted to developing new skills and zone lore.

Hopefully, we'll have some eye candies to share around this in the coming weeks.

Finally, our coders have started programming the next content patch. Well technically, they are still laying down the code foundation and other primary mapping tasks while awaiting finalized content from both the artist and the writers. But overall, the ball has started rolling on building the patch up.

Additionally, with work on the Quest Log now near completion, the team has started exploring the viability of an intergalactic map system. With the writers opening avenues of revisiting old zones, traveling to different planets might become a core facet going forward and as such no journey is fun if you can't map where you are going.

Please note though, this is a very early stage evaluation and far from a confirmed reality at the moment. We'll keep you posted as more develops.

How's it going? We hope this week is treating you well. Let's try and make it even better by giving you a rundown on what we have been upto this past week itself.

We've already established how deeply Caly cares about her spacesuit. But the first outfit she received from Haar is something she genuinely treasures as well. To make it extra special, we took this "casual outfit" and made some markedly visual updates to it- to the point that some might even call it a full revamp(refer to the image alongside).

The point of this new art is to close the gap and the difference between how her sprite looks in comparison to her casual standing art looks. Hope you like the new changes as we cannot wait to make this update live and have you take Caly's new outlook, out for a spin!.

Additionally, the first bounty target has a face, a weapon, and foot tentacles. The design came together very nicely. The next stage will be creating their combat sprite and pixel sprite before moving onto a new environmental asset for the mission.

Onward, to some tale telling!

Work has officially begun on the second Bounty Hunter Quest. With majority of the time spent on concepting the pieces, this time our writers are playing the details close to their heart, though we remain unsure if it is intended as a surprise unveil or simply too early to divulge the deets. Either way, we're glad things are coming together nicely for some more game-play content.

More details however, have been shared regarding Tripteen- the first planetary introduction area. The goal decided is to take what we already have and expand it, turning the location into a hub that will be attached to additional side quests so that Caly has reasons to return to interact with the NPCs on our first planet. And yes indeed, rebuilding of the entire dungeon itself might be on the agenda as well!

More on this soon but, for now, the zeros and ones transmission incoming.

With Bounty Quests finished on paper, it's time to start spinning the code to make it a virtual reality. Specifically, work has started on creating a new enemy with a unique skill of their own to make sure bounty hunting is no cakewalk. After-all, where is the fun if the hunt is devoid of challenge?

Meanwhile, trial Testing has also begun on implementation and animations of the new standing arts. Currently mock models are being run to hunt for any induction issues or unintended bugs. But, we relatively speculate a seamless integration and replacement of older models without many, or any, issues whatsoever. Stay tuned as we bring you a more expression rich Caly to make your reading experience much more immersive!

patch in a day or so but, that is for another day and another place.
