Italy Nation Pack - Aircraft Preview

Hello, hello!

We are back with the final installment of our Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: Italy previews. In today’s DevBlog, we take to the skies with a look at the DLC’s new helicopters and aircraft.

Let’s go!
Flying High With Nation Pack: Italy
In terms of helicopters, Italy initially relied only on American-made helos. These were mostly civilian variants of military helicopters such as the Kiowa, Huey, and Chinook, with some of them modified by local Italian industries. From the 1980s onwards, a wind of change blew as Italians started developing and deploying their own designs. These proved effective, such as the multi-purpose A.109 and the A.129 attack helicopter.

When it comes to aircraft, the Italian Air Force can be divided into three categories: the F-104, which was used, reused, heavily upgraded, and kept on for almost half of the Cold War’s duration; the jointly developed Italian-British-German Tornado; and older, lighter domestic designs, such as the G.91, MB-399, and A-11 Ghibli. The odd one out - not falling under the above labels - is the AV-8B.
The Helicopter Force
As before, all bolded units are new or remade models.

In the LOG tab, you’ll find.
  • AB.205 CMDO: the Bell 205, which is a civilian version of the UH-1 Huey. This helicopter is license-produced by Augusta-Bell in Italy. Unarmed CV.
  • CH-47C CARICO: the classic supply Chinook.

As infantry transports, the following rotorcraft can be deployed.
  • AB.205: identical to the CV variant, but with side-mounted MG 42/59.
  • AB.412: civilian version of the four-bladed UH-1 Twin Huey. Unarmed and available from 1983.
  • AB.412 GRIFONE: same as the previous unit, but with side-mounted MG 42/59. Available from 1987.
  • C-47C: a Chinook in a classic transport format.

As recon units.
  • AB.206: unarmed civilian version of the Kiowa.
  • AB.212 ELIGUFO: civilian version of the twin-bladed UH-1 Twin Huey. This specific Marina variant was fitted with electronic equipment for naval surveillance. In-game, it will act as an unarmed radar recon helicopter. Available from 1983.
  • A.109EOA-1: unarmed recon helicopter, faster and more resilient than the AB.206. Available from 1988.
  • A.109EOA-2: same as the previous one, but armed with two 12,7mm machine gun pods and two 7-tube 70mm rocket pods. Also available from 1988.

And lastly, dedicated attack or gunship helicopters.
  • AB.205 MAMEE: a Huey fitted with twin 7,62mm Gatlings and two 7-tube 70mm rocket pods.
  • A.109AT: a purely anti-tank A.109 variant armed with four I-TOW tubes. Available from 1982.
  • A.129 MANGUSTA: a gunship variant with eight TOW-2 tubes and two 7-tube 70mm rocket pods. Available from 1990.
  • A.129 MANGUSTA CBT: a more versatile variant with a 20mm rotary nose cannon, four Stinger tubes, and two 19-tube 70mm rocket pods. Available from 1995 and prototyped.
The Air Force
Let’s detail the array of aircraft of this Nation Pack:

We start with the F-104 family.
  • F-104G: the old-time multi-role version of the “Widowmaker”, carrying 2x AIM-9B and 4x Mk.83 500kg bombs.
  • F-104S the ultimate F-104 variant. This is a license-produced Italian version that upgrades the plane’s air detection and electronics, allowing it to carry 2x AIM-7F Sparrow with 4x AIM-9B. This returns the plane to its original fighter role.
  • F-104S-ASA-1: a further electronics-focused upgrade of the F-104S. This variant can fire the domestic-made Aspide-1A [SA] long-range air-to-air missile. Available from 1986.
  • F-104S-ASA-2: the final upgrade further improves the plane’s air detection, plus allowing it to fire indigenous Idra [F&F] long-range air-to-air missiles. Available from 1990.

Next up, the Tornado.
  • TORNADO A-200: multi-role, with 2x AIM-9L and 5xMk.20 Rockeye II cluster bombs. Available from 1982.
  • TORNADO EA-200B: SEAD, with 4x AGM-88 HARM missiles. Available from 1990.
  • TORNADO ADV: fighter, with 4x AIM-9L and 4x Skyflash SuperTEMP. Available from 1995 and prototyped.

The “real Italian” domestic family, badabing.
  • G.91R/1: old fighter turned bomber, with 4x Aerea 559G1 napalm bombs.
  • G.91Y: a speedier variant, with 2x AS-20 anti-tank missile.
  • MB-339: a trainer used in a CAS role, with 38x 70mm and 8x 127mm rockets. Already featured with ANZAC as a napalm bomber. Available from 1980.
  • A-11 GHIBLI: a dedicated ground attack aircraft designed jointly by Italy and Brazil, it carries 2x AIM-9L & 2x GBU-16 Paveway II laser-guided bombs. Who doesn’t like a Ghibli? Available from 1989.

And for the odd one out the AV-8B HARRIER VTOL carrying 2x AGM-65E Maverick anti-tank missiles and 2x AIM-9L air-to-air missiles. Available from 1995 and prototyped.

Italy Nation Pack - Vehicles Preview

We are back!

As promised, in today’s DevBlog, we’ll shine a light on the new arsenal of vehicles you’ll get to play with in the upcoming Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: Italy.

Let’s go!
Play it cool with Nation Pack: Italy
Italy’s roster of vehicles and equipment is quite peculiar. For most of the Cold War, the Italian Army had to make do with foreign materiel, especially its main battle tanks. However, it had a strong automotive and manufacturing base, with the domestic military industry designing some striking armored vehicles destined for an export market.

This means that Italy had a large number of potential “prototypes,” most of which were actually way beyond the experimental stage, finding export success in other countries. So many of these types of vehicles exist that we could have made a Wargame: Red Dragon Italian Army with only export prototypes. A fine line had to be walked between featuring a realistic Italian Armed Forces and balancing the prototype/export deemed fun or necessary.

A technical note before we dive in: most of the models done (or remade) for this Nation Pack benefited from the latest advancements in Eugen’s modeling process - the same one we are using now for WARNO. This is very much in the same vein as the SADF leveraged Steel Division 2 improvements. The Italian Nation Pack models will be some of the most advanced and visually striking in Wargame: Red Dragon!
Main types of Italian vehicles
What kind of vehicles will you be able to encounter in Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: Italy? Bolded units are new!

LOG
  • Command vehicles will include the following:
    • AR76 CMDO: the iconic Campagnola jeep of the Italian Army. Here, unarmed as a CV, it will be made available in several other variants in other categories.
    • FIAT 6614 CMDO: an armored car armed with a .50 cal.
    • M577A2 CMDO: the classic tracked APC.
    • LVTC-7: a heavy amphibious command vehicle armed with a .50 cal.
    • LEOPARD 1A2 CMDO: a command variant of Italy’s main battle tank.
  • Supply vehicles include the following:
    • ACM-80 CARICO: a light supply truck.
    • FIAT 6602 CARICO: a medium supply truck.

All the above vehicles are all Eras!

SUPP
  • Italy toyed a lot with fielding MLRS, testing rocket launchers on many different types of vehicles.
    • FIROS-25 is a 40-tube 122mm napalm MLRS mounted on a truck. Not adopted by the Italian Army in this variant, it is classified as a 1981 prototype.
    • FIROS-30 sports the same launcher but uses HE and Smoke rounds and is mounted on a bigger, faster, and sturdier truck. Available from 1987.
    • M270 MLRS: bigger is better, with the classic 227mm MRLS rocket launcher in HE configuration. Available from 1990.
  • More FIROS variants, mostly lighter ones, will be found in the VEH category as direct fire support units.

Tube artillery includes:
  • SEMOVENTE 155/23 M109G: the classic short-tube M109G.
  • SEMOVENTE 155/39 M109L: the longer M109, but with an indigenous OTO Melara gun. Available from 1986.
  • SEMOVENTE 175/60 M107: the classic M107 175mm.
  • SEMOVENTE 203/39 M110A2: the classic M110A2 203mm. Available from 1985.

Self-propelled mortars are:
  • PORTA-MORTAIO M125: the classic M125 81mm mortar.
  • PORTA-MORTAIO M106: the classic M106 107mm mortar.
  • PORTA-MORTAIO M106A2: an improved variant of the latter unit, with the M30 107mm mortar replaced by the much better (French!) MO-120-RT 120mm. Available from 1986.

Missile air defense units include the following:
  • M727 I-HAWK: the ubiquitous unit.
  • M727 I-HAWK PIP II: the same system as fielded by South Korea and the Netherlands. Available from 1985.
  • SPADA ASPIDE: Like the Hawk in real life, this one isn’t supposed to be self-propelled. However, for gameplay purposes, we put it on the back of an Italian truck as a “prototype,” although it has been available since 1983. This system follows the same logic as the Norwegians with their AMRAAM: the Italians modified a domestic long-range air-to-air missile - the SPADA - to be ground-launched. In game terms, the SPADA ASPIDE is a slightly less accurate NASAMS.

Air defense systems using guns include the following SPAAGs:
  • QUADRINATA ACM-52: the poor man’s SPAAG, this is a truck mounting a quad .50 cal.
  • SIDAM 25: quite a bit more powerful, featuring a quad 25mm on a M113. Available from 1989.
  • And of course, the (infamous) unit everyone expects (or fears): the OF-40 OTOMATIC. It is everybody’s favorite meme gun mounted on a sturdier OF-40 MBT chassis compared to the Danish Leopard 1. Available from 1989 as a prototype.
The list goes on
Due to Italy's use of several different armor models, we have divided its tank tab into three distinct “families.”

The “Americans:”
  • M47: still used by the Italian Carabinieri (military police) in our timeframe.
  • M60A1: similar to the one used by the USMC.
  • M60A1 ERA: also similar to the USMC version, but with better ammo (+1), being only available from 1990.

The “Exports:”

The OF-40 was only used by the United Arab Emirates in real life. This means that all members of this family are prototyped.

  • OF-40: a “Leoparoïd” as figuratively described by some. In their quest for a new domestic design, the OTO Melara and Fiat engineers basically reinvented a tank that could be seen as sitting between a Leopard 1A2 and 1A3, although lacking stabilizers. Available from 1980.
  • OF-40 Mk.2: continuing their joint venture, the designers greatly improved the tank gun’s range and accuracy, as well as adding stabilizers. The armor package remained unchanged. Available from 1982.
  • OF-40 Mk.2A: with slightly improved accuracy. The stabilizer features a noticeable improvement. Armor remains unchanged, but optics are updated. Available from 1993.
  • OF-40 Mk.3: the ultimate variant replaces the 105mm gun with a more powerful and accurate 120mm version. It also features improved armor all-around and adds an extra MG. Also available from 1993.

The “Domestics:”

  • LEOPARD 1A2: All right, it might be the bastard child in this particular family, not being entirely “Italian.” We would like to note that it was produced in great numbers in Italy under license, turning it into the most numbered tank used in the Italian Army. It is similar to the in-game German counterpart.
  • C1 ARIETE: the one and only. We all expect this modern main battle tank here. It is included as a 1995 prototype, Italy’s own “heavy” main battle tank. It uses the same tank gun as the OF-40 Mk.3, although with better ammo.

Next up is reconnaissance.

The Campagnola family brings:
  • AR76 CARABINERI: an unarmed recon jeep.
  • AR76 RICO.: the same jeep, but sporting a .50 cal.

The Fiat 6616 series of light armored cars:
  • FIAT 6616 20mm: similar to the South Korean counterpart.
  • FIAT 6616 90mm: the same chassis as the previous unit, but armed with a low-pressure 90mm Cockerill Mk.3 gun. This vehicle is roughly a better AML-90, being a tad bit faster, better armored, and armed. Available from 1990.
  • FIAT 6616 60mm: same chassis, but armed with the HVMS 60mm high-velocity gun (AP rounds only). This armament is already found on the Israeli vehicle of the same name. Available from 1989, but as a prototype.

The “heavy recon” family:
  • LEOPARD 1A2 RICO.: similar to the main battle tank, but in the recon role.
  • B1 CENTAURO RICO.: Italy’s striking indigenous heavy armored car. It is a better AMX-10 RC, faster, with more range and accuracy, a stabilizer, better optics, and slightly more armor. Available from 1990.
Some more vehicles
And we turn to a general type of vehicle.

Fire support vehicles:
  • AR59 CANNONIERA: the AR76’s ancestor, mounting an M40A1 RCL as a fire support vehicle.
  • FIROS-6 (AR76): the classic AR76 armed with a 48-tube 51mm MLRS. Can only fire in direct support. This version was designed for paratroopers, providing them with additional firepower. It was never adopted for service. Available all-era, but prototyped.
  • FIROS-6 (FIAT 6614): the same launcher, also adapted on a Fiat 6614 armored car for export. Available all-era, but prototyped.

Missile tank destroyers include:
  • AR76 C.C. I-TOW: the classic AR76 with an I-TOW launcher. Available from 1982.
  • VTC TOW: this is the M150, an M113 armed with a single TOW tube.
  • VTC I-TOW: the same, but armed with I-TOW missiles. Available from 1982.
  • VCC-1 TUA: A VCC-1 APC (see below) with a TUA turret that can fire two TOW-2 missiles in quick succession. Available as a prototype in 1990.

Tank destroyers sporting a gun:
  • C-13/60: identical to the Israeli HVMS (an Italian export product) but in the tank destroyer role - not recon - and on a slightly different chassis.
  • B1 CENTAURO: the same as the recon variant, but with lesser optics.

And in the transport section:

  • ACM-80: a soft-skin truck transport.
  • FIAT 6614: light wheeled APC, similar to the South Korean KM900.
  • LVTP-7: heavy amphibious vehicle.
  • M113A1: the classic APC.
  • VCC-1 CAMILLINO: indigenous M113-like APC, with more armor, yet retaining its amphibious ability. Available from 1982.
  • VCC-1 CAMILLINO Mk.3: uparmored VCC-1, but having lost its amphibious capacity. Available from 1995 and prototyped.
  • VM 90P PROTETTO: an armored truck. It will count as a recon and transport for some scout squads. Available from 1990.

Italy Nation Pack - Infantry Preview

Surprise, surprise, surprise!

We are back with a new Nation Pack for our ever-popular Wargame: Red Dragon, introducing… the armed forces of Italy!

That’s right, an often-requested new nation is being worked on in Eugen’s workshop as we speak. The upcoming Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: Italy will feature the cool and striking Italian Armed Forces, with a release date in the very short future.

In today’s post, we’ll take a first look at the Italian Nation Pack’s infantry. Future posts will detail new Italian ground vehicles to be followed by air forces.

Let’s dig in.
Play it cool with Nation Pack: Italy
We love to spring a good surprise on our player base. But you might be wondering, why now? As you all should know, Italy has been popularly requested by the community to be included in Wargame: Red Dragon for quite some time.

In our opinion, the Mediterranean nation was the last missing piece in our game. With enough domestic designs to justify its place in Wargame: Red Dragon, it would have been a shame for Italy to remain excluded.

That’s why the Italian Armed Forces will finally, and gloriously so, if we might say, make their appearance with the upcoming Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: Italy.
What’s in the box?
The capable Italian Armed Forces were the linchpin of any NATO-led Mediterranean operation. They enjoy a long and proud military lineage, from its elite Alpine troops to the fast-moving armored units. So, too, the Italian automotive and armament industries, having produced iconic and noteworthy vehicles during the Cold War and beyond. Among others, these include the AR.76 Campagnola army jeep, the wheeled B1 Centauro, the C1 Ariete main battle tank, the hard-hitting A-129 Mangusta attack helicopter, and the A-11 Ghibli ground-attack aircraft.
Italian Infantry detailed
But first, the Italian foot soldier! Infantry in the Italian Armed Forces remained equipped with small arms stemming from World War 2 or immediate post-war designs for the longest time. The main individual weapon for most soldiers was the BM 59 battle rifle, a locally produced M1 Garand modified with a detachable magazine and selective fire. Some units requiring lighter weapons, such as weapon crews, scouts, and commanders, even retained the MAB 38/49 SMG (considered one of the best of its kind during the war).

The MG 42/59 was the preferred squad automatic weapon, which, as anyone can guess, is a locally produced World War 2-era originally German iconic MG-42 rechambered to the NATO 7,62mm round. Squad anti-tank weapons are either M20A1 Super Bazooka (another upgraded World War 2 weapon) or the Belgian RL-100 Blindicide. In some cases, the M18 57mm recoilless rifle is fielded.

By the late 1980s, Italy has developed its own assault rifle: the AR 70/90. It also went looking for better anti-tank weapons, resulting in the APILAS and even a few PzF 3 becoming available to its troops. Italian Alpine forces favored the recoilless rifle, which resulted in a domestic design, the Folgore 80mm. Although a few special forces units received the Minimi as an off-the-shelves option, the previously mentioned MG 42/59 kept on being Italy’s main machine gun for the whole duration of the Cold War.

These straight-from-World War 2 weapons were the mainstay of the Italian infantry’s armament for most of the Cold War. Only a select few units transitioned to more modern equipment in the late 1980s. This means that within Wargame: Red Dragon, only non-era restricted decks will have access to the most modern weapons.
The main types of Italian infantry
Which will be the main types of infantry for Wargame: Red Dragon - Nation Pack: Italy?

  • FANTERIA DI LINEA will be your typical grunt, the bread-and-butter infantry.
  • LAGUNARI and MARÒ are both considered naval infantry in-game. In real life, the former can be equated to more “riverine” or “amphibious” infantry. These are army units tasked with securing Venice’s lagoons and riverways. The latter are “true” marines, being Navy and sea-oriented. Both will provide Italy’s MARINES deck’s infantry. The latter unit’s name is a contraction of SAN MARCO, their patron saint.
  • PARACADUTISTI are Italy’s airborne troopers, heir to World War 2’s famed Folgore.
  • ALPINI are Italy’s light mountain troops. Though less famous abroad than the units mentioned above, these forces have always been considered the country’s best.

WARNO is a spiritual successor to the Wargame RTS series

I had some fun with the Wargame series of real-time strategy games, although past a certain point I couldn't tell the difference between its umpteen historical tanks. Now developers Eugen Systems are making a spiritual successor called WARNO, which is coming to Steam Early Access next month.

WARNO, the spiritual successor to Wargame, is coming soon to Steam Early Access!

Hello!

In case you missed the big news: we have revealed the spiritual successor to the Wargame series today! Get ready to deploy into our next-gen World War III battle simulator, WARNO! You don’t have to wait long. This coming January 20th when we will launch into Steam Early Access!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1611600/WARNO/

WARNO results from months and years of hard work from our talented (but small) team at Eugen Systems. Our new real-time strategy and simulation game will focus on an escalating conflict between NATO and Warsaw Pact forces in Western Europe in 1989.

In case you missed it, be sure to check out WARNO’s reveal trailer.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

We took most of the exciting, fun gameplay of Wargame and added all the best elements of our Steel Division series to the mix. And voila, WARNO was born. What does this mean? For instance, in WARNO you’ll be able to play our Army General campaigns depicting a devastating World War III in West Germany, gain access to the new division-based battlegroup building system, and get to play with Rules of Engagement and Smart Orders - and much much more.

Most of the information you can read on the WARNO’s Steam store page, but we wanted to highlight that the full version of WARNO will contain over 600 units, six different nations, four massive turn-based Army General campaigns, scripted Operations, a host of quality-of-life updates and enhancements, etc.

The Early Access launch of WARNO is scheduled for the 20th of January. You will be able to play with the arsenals of two nations (U.S. and Soviet Union) on Skirmish maps either solo or online (up to 10v10 matches). This is just the start. After the Early Access release, our aim is to update WARNO continuously. So expect frequent updates, content drops, new nations, units, Army General campaigns, scenarios!

We hope you will join us on our new journey. Be sure to wishlist WARNO (if you haven’t done so) as you get ready for action on the 20th of January! If you want to keep up to date, don’t forget to check out our dedicated Discord server or WARNO’s own Steam forums.

Before we sign off: from the whole team at Eugen Systems, we hope you have a wonderful holiday season and a happy new year. See you soon!
