A new, free version of Rust has been revealed, but there's a catch

Take a glance at Steam's top ten most-played games on any given day, and there are a few names you're almost guaranteed to see. Dota 2. Counter-Strike 2. PUBG. They're all consistent big hitters. So too is Rust, arguably Steam's biggest survival game, and a brand new version of Facepunch's legendary game has just been fully revealed. Unfortunately for those on PC, this is not 'Rust 2' - it's Rust Mobile.

Rust system requirements

The Rust system requirements aren't particularly stressful, unlike its PVP aspect, but they're certainly quite high for a game that was originally released in 2018. That said, Rust has received innumerable updates since its original launch, which has subsequently and slowly raised the hardware demands.

As of the latest update, Rust doesn't call for anything high-tier from our buying guides, such as our best graphics card guide, but you will need an unusual amount of RAM to meet the minimum requirements. You'll also want a decent internet connection if you want to dive into Rust, as latency can be a real progress-killer if you're lagging during a raid.

Rust's developer is overhauling the survival sim's mission system so it can create in-game quests faster and more easily: 'The process to create new missions internally is quite cumbersome and error prone'

Rust's latest patch may not be as dramatic as its recent jungle update, which added a huge rainforest biome to explore, but it nonetheless makes some important changes to Facepunch's survival sim. The headline update is a party system allowing players to join servers as a group. This makes playing with your friends slightly easier, not only from an organisational perspective, but also because it spawns you into a map together, meaning you don't have to track each other down and risk being killed in the process...

New Rust update introduces party system and an essential building upgrade

The Rust July update is here, and it's absolutely packed with changes. We're a couple of months on from the introduction of the jungle biome to the tremendously popular survival game, which remains the top dog on Steam over a decade after it first helped to define the genre, and developer Facepunch is looking as strong as ever. The new Rust update today includes a wealth of very welcome improvements, including a party system, a deployable snapping tool to make building much easier, and Outpost spawning.
