Devlog #22: What’s the story behind the game? – October 1st, 2025

Today, I’m chatting with Ferran, one of our Co-Founders, as well as the Game Designer and Creative Director of the studio at RolldBox Games 👋[/p][p][/p][p]We’ve just shared on Steam that Masks of the Void: Origins is coming to Early Access shortly. You’ll be able to dive in before long! 🆕[/p][p][/p][p]While we continue working hard on the game, we’d like to share some more details about the story behind it.[/p][p][/p][h3]Inside the Development Process[/h3][p]
In the previous Devlog, we talked a bit about Tyrant. But who is he? How did he come to be?[/p][p][/p][p]The mask plays a crucial and defining role. To truly understand Tyrant, we also need to discover Dayir. Deep down, there’s a bond between them that ties their fates together forever.[/p][p][/p][p]🔹 So, let’s talk about Tyrant: a character overflowing with power — the power of the mask — a force that corrupts him to the point where he sees himself as the only true authority in the Vortex. The only one who decides what happens, and one who will unleash his constructs against anyone daring to question him.[/p][p][/p][p]We may never fully understand him, but one thing is certain: we’ll have to face him if we want to uncover the full extent of the masks’ power.[/p][p][/p][p]![]()
[/p][p]So who is Dayir, then? And what’s his connection to Tyrant?[/p][p][/p][p]🔹 Dayir was just a boy when he was taken from his family and forced into slavery. In that harsh new world, and in his loneliness, he had to grow strong, struggle to survive, and a deep yearning for freedom developed within him — a burning desire to escape. Along the way, during his flight, he stumbled upon a hidden cave in the dunes of his world, and there he found a mask with a very special power.[/p][p][/p][p]Could he understand it? Could he harness it?[/p][p][/p][p]![]()
[/p][p]Tyrant versus Dayir, Dayir versus Tyrant… how are they connected? And how do they both relate to Iret?[/p][p][/p][p]The Void holds the answer… but will Iret be the one to uncover it?[/p][p][/p][p][/p][h3]Sneak Peek of Upcoming Content[/h3][p][/p][p]During the creation of Masks of the Void and the entire franchise, we faced one main challenge: we wanted players to experience power. We also wanted them to explore its different forms and see how each of them chooses to wield it.[/p][p][/p][p]This led us to give power a visible form: telekinesis, masks, and The Void. These were the three core ingredients to start with, along with a protagonist with little power: Iret in the lab. ⚗️[/p][p][/p][p]![]()
