Scouting Guide for Novice Survivors
< Overview >
This guide has been created for the Survivors who have recently joined NAKWON, helping them develop the essential basic knowledge required for Survival.

This section will showcase basic information on Scouting that can be helpful for the safe return of Survivors.

Survivors who are aware of the precautions have a higher chance of survival, so we encourage you to practice and familiarize yourself with them.
< Purpose of Scouting >
Human beings spend resources for survival.
Unfortunately, Yeouido, where the NAKWON community resides, cannot afford to be self-sufficient.

However, there are still various resources left throughout Seoul.
We need to bring resources from the outside to make a living.
< Scouting Location >
In the early beginning of NAKWON, we tried scouting in various regions of Seoul.
Now, however, we only allow scouting around the Jongno 3-ga area.

This decision was made by the NAKWON Governing Committee due to the stability of the pathways and the region itself, the richness of resources, etc.
A lot of sacrifice and trial and error were needed to come to this conclusion.
< Scouting Rule >
All citizens in NAKWON must scout regularly.
The rules are as below:
 • All citizens must join Scouting regularly.
 • It is possible to rest without Scouting, but the number of Scouts that one may skip differs according to the Citizen Grade.
 • Scouting is allowed once a day. Sleep and rest as soon as you return.
 • No responsibility for anything that happens during the Scouting. What happens in the Lawless Zone stays in the Lawless Zone.
 • Scouting is primarily conducted during the night. This is the safest time as of now.
 • The NAKWON Governing Committee collects collapsed personnel before dawn and makes a return. For a quick return, everything other than the collapsed body will be left behind.
< Scouting Process >
Scouting will be carried out in four stages below.
 1. Wait
 2. Entrance
 3. Scouting
 4. Escape
1. Wait
You may have to wait as we collect and transfer people who join in the Scouting at once.
Once there are enough people, everyone moves to Jongno 3-ga and starts scouting.

2. Entrance
The Governing Committee transfers Survivors only to near the Jongno 3-ga area and Survivors carry on Scouting separately.
Because there were many cases where all personnel were wiped out while being in one place, we now randomly distribute survivors and let them enter.

However, two people who are battle buddies start scouting at the same place.

3. Scouting
Your current location and the assigned Personal Escape Route can be checked via the map on the given Tablet PC.
You will also be able to find the information on each Building.
Make a scouting plan considering the location of Escape Routes.
The main buildings' information can be also found on the map.
Find what you need and conduct Scouting safely.

4. Escape
There are three main Escape Routes.
You will be able to escape from anywhere but be aware that some Routes have conditions to use.

1) Personal Escape Route: After numerous sacrifices, the NAKWON Governing Committee has secured the safety of several manholes.
Every Scouting, one manhole will be randomly assigned for each person to escape.
The lock of the manhole is connected to the given Tablet PC, so each assigned manhole will be available only to the one who has the connected device.

However, members of the buddy system have the same Personal Escape Route and will be able to move together from beginning to end.

2) Public Escape Route: In case of emergency, we have secured a large scale of Escape Routes on the defensive walls at the edge of Jongno 3-ga.

However, for security reasons, they will stay locked for a certain period after scouting starts. Once opened, they are available for everyone.
One or two of the Public Escape Routes are in each of the east, west, north, and south of Jongno 3-ga.

3) Secret Escape Route: We came across a place that leads from the inside of an old underground waterway to a tunnel.
It's confirmed that the tunnel can be used to return to NAKWON.

However, the iron bars blocking the entrance of the waterway are automatically locked every day, and the only way to open them is to activate both switches located in a specific location.
There are constant rumors of rare items being found inside the waterway, but this is not under our management, so it's not officially recommended to use.
< Dangers in Scouting >
There are numerous factors that threaten your life during Scouting.
Most times, being aware of the factors below could be a big help for survival.
 • Zombies
An estimated 200 to 300 Zombies are in Jongno 3-ga where you go scouting.
The number changes little by little every day, but you should be careful during scouting as Zombies are always there.

Zombies are strong.
They can be defeated with around a minimum of 7 hits with the given weapon. (The mentioned number may change upon Zombie's body part that you hit.)
Better weapons sold in the higher-class shop (A thorn bat or a claw hammer) would "kill" Zombies with 2~3 hits, but the sound may stimulate other Zombies around.

Defeated Zombies will get up around in 3~5 minutes, so we recommend you collect everything you need and move on.
More information on Zombies can be found in another guide issued by the NAKWON Governing Committee.
 • Other Survivors
Even though we distribute every citizen randomly across the area, there's a chance you'll come across each other.
Most times, it is recommended that you don't encounter each other from the beginning.

A significant number of the collapsed that we collect have traces of being attacked by someone else, not by Zombies.
In this Lawless Zone, no proof or testimony holds meaning.

Remember the rule: ‘What happens in the Lawless Zone stays in the Lawless Zone.’
Do not trust any other people except your scout buddy, be cautious and avoid.
 • Spreading Poisonous Gas
Poison gas, which began to occur with the Zombie Apocalypse, covers the city for most of the time.
Your HP decreases naturally in the gas.
The Poisonous Gas disappears for a moment during the night, which is one of the reasons Scouting is primarily conducted during the night.
We let the Scouting start right after the Poisonous Gas disappears, but it spreads again to the whole city in a short time.
You may bear in the gas a bit, but it is not recommended.
We encourage you to finish scouting and escape through the Escape Route before it's too late.
< Scouting Mission Details >
The basic goal of scouting is bringing needed resources for survival.
Other than that, a mission may be delivered from the NAKWON Governing Committee to each of the Survivors.
Additional rewards are given if you complete the mission and return, though it is not mandatory.
 • Collecting
Usually, resources are found in the following way:

1. Street Search
Various resources can be found on the street.
Items such as bricks, empty bottles, piles of wires, or worn-out clothes may be worth less but can be used to attract Zombies or to make temporary defensive gears.

2. Opening Boxes
From trash cans to safes, there are various boxes you can see anywhere.
Different items can be found within.

3. Indoor Search
Valuable items are usually found indoors.
Especially in large main buildings (for example, huge buildings in the NAKWON Arcade), numerous items are still left.

However, there is a higher risk indoors as it is more difficult to run away when surrounded by Zombies, and you can never rule out the possibility of running into other Survivors.

4. Collecting from other existences
You'll be able to search Zombies' bodies after defeating them, but it is difficult to find anything of real use.
You will also be able to search other collapsed Survivors' bodies.
Be aware that there are Survivors who join Scouting just to steal from other Survivors.
 • Mission Conduct
Missions needed for NAKWON will be assigned to each Survivor and will be notified during Scouting.
The details can be found on the Tablet PC, and it is okay that you do not complete the missions.
However, as corresponding rewards will be given once you return after completing them, we encourage you to complete the missions.
< Tips for survival in scouting >
The tips below are pieces of advice from Survivors with a high survival rate or a high resource collection rate while conducting several Scoutings.
But, they are not always right. So we encourage you to act wisely on your own accord.
 • Securing safety near Escape Routes
One thing that could be learned from lots of scouting was that the moment of escape is the most dangerous.
I almost died several times from sudden attacks by hidden Survivors near Escape Routes.
Since then, I have made a habit of cleaning up around the Escape Routes before escaping.
From a little far from the Escape Route, I attract Zombies to places where other survivors may be hiding by throwing items. (I prepare bricks or empty bottles to throw beforehand.)
This helps me check not only if there is someone hiding but also Zombies in blind spots in advance.
It takes some time to lure out the Zombies, but I've never been attacked out of nowhere near Escape Routes since I have made this a habit.
 • Looting Zombies
Most people avoid Zombies or defeat them quickly and pass.
It's because they think no worthy items can be found in Zombies except worn-out clothes.
However, in special places, I defeat Zombies and check each body.
The story that is considered an urban legend, that the treasure was found from Zombies, is true.
I experienced it myself. I cannot disclose more as it is a trade secret.
 • Use Buses
Going scouting often makes you become familiar with the lay of the land.
Among the buses near the alley, there are buses you can jump, grab, and climb onto, but Zombies cannot.
If you find those spots beforehand and memorize them, you can make your own route where you can run through for Scouting.
Starting from one point, decide on the next point and run at full speed.
Before you get caught by Zombies that follow your sounds, climb up to the next point and have a rest.
Wait until your stamina recovers, and set the next spot, jump down, and run.
I am maintaining a 50% survival rate this way.
 • Buddy System
I always go Scouting with a friend.
Activity as a scout buddy makes it significantly easier and quicker to defeat Zombies and move on.
When one person catches a Zombie's attention and lures them away, another person can go behind the Zombie and choke it.
Piece of cake.
The same method can be used when more than two Zombies approach.
If there are more than three Zombies, one can attract them, and the other can prepare an ax or weapon to attack the Zombies from the back.
But you must be careful not to attack your buddy.

Guide on Basic Movement for Survivors
< Overview >
This guide has been created for the Survivors who have recently joined NAKWON, helping them develop the essential basic knowledge required for Survival.

This section will showcase what the Survivors are able to do, focusing on basic movements that can be helpful and applicable in various survival situations.

Survivors collectively use these basic movement skills calmly during emergencies, so we encourage that you practice and be familiar with these.
< Basic Movements >
The characteristics and basic factors of movement that Humans can apply are explained below.
It is recommended to walk or crouch as the Zombies are attracted by sound.

It's also available to move over a number of objects and avoid the Zombies to reach higher heights.
Based on the jumping (space) motion, it is possible to jump over an obstacle or hang high while jumping.
The Zombies can cross or climb waist-high obstacles, but cannot hold onto and reach heights taller than themselves, so always explore high places in advance before moving.
< Using the Flashlight >
Scouting is primarily conducted during the night. This is the safest time period. (Further research is underway to extend the exploration time.)
Most electricity is cut off in the city, engulfing it in darkness. This is why flashlights are provided to the Survivors.

Flashlights are easily activated using the mouse wheel button, so make sure to turn them on or off depending on the situation. Zombies cannot distinguish between light and darkness, meaning that turning on the flashlight to detect Zombies first is overall the best method for survival.

However, in the following circumstances, we recommend turning off the flashlight and hiding in the dark, using your judgment.
 • When you encounter other Survivors from afar for the first time
 • When other Survivors approach your flashlight
 • When other Survivors have the will to attack
 • When you are being pursued by other Survivors

Turning on the flashlight is useful for discovering Zombies firsthand, but it also reveals your location to others. Make sure to use your flashlight effectively, relying on your own judgment in specific situations.
< Stealth >
The greatest method for survival is to not put yourself in a dangerous situation in the first place. Encounters with the Zombies and other Survivors can lead to dangerous situations. Therefore, the most effective survival method is to minimize confrontations with the Zombies or other Survivors.

▶ Staying Hidden
Moving behind cover is the best way to stay hidden. Use abandoned vehicles or containers when outdoors, and use various furniture items when hiding indoors.
Seeking higher grounds is an effective method for avoiding the Zombies, but keep in mind that other Survivors will be able to spot you more easily.

▶ Keeping Quiet
Crouching reduces the noise of your footsteps, making it an excellent survival method.
In the beginning of the Zombie Invasion, only this method was taught and recommended, but many Survivors failed to follow these guidelines in actual situations.
In order to increase the effectiveness of these methods, a combination of the currently two approaches is recommended.
 1. Crouching: When Zombies are in your line of sight.
 2. Walking: When Zombies are not in line of sight

If the Zombies are blocking your path, you can also consider moving backward or attracting them to a different location.

▶ Attracting Zombies
Throw easily accessible objects such as bricks or empty bottles away from your intended path. When the Zombies are attracted by the noise and start moving, immediately vacate the location while crouching.
< Escape >
When found and pursued by Zombies, escaping is highly recommended. Unless in special situations, there are only minimal gains in combat with the Zombies.
The method of escape is determined depending on the situation while facing the Zombies.

▶ When being pursued by one Zombie
∎ No nearby accessible doors
 1. Evade from the sight Head towards cover(buses, trucks) on the opposite direction of where the Zombie is coming from. Before the Zombie starts chasing you, hide behind the cover to evade their sight.
 2. Make a quiet escape: After evading from their sight, move in silence, walking or crouching, without making noise. Just like playing hide and seek amongst the cover, keep moving away from the Zombies in the opposite direction. The Zombie will return to its original location after losing sight of you.

∎ Nearby accessible doors
 1. Enter and close the door: Run to the door and close the door before the Zombie has the chance to enter.
 2. Move quietly to a different place: Move to a different location while the Zombie is trying to break through the door. Escape from the Zombies by walking or crouching, without making any noise.

▶ When being pursued by multiple Zombies
∎ An elevated place nearby
 1. Climb up: Head towards a high point where the Zombies cannot reach. Turn off your flashlight then, and avoid attracting attention from other nearby Survivors.
 2. Atract them to one place: The Zombies will surround you but are unable to climb to your location. Stand facing the opposite direction of your escape route to attract them all to one side, gathering them beneath you.
 3. Escape in the opposite direction: Once your stamina is sufficiently restored, get down to the opposite direction from where the Zombies are clustered and make your escape.

∎ No elevated place nearby
 1. Run for escape: Run to an open, spacious place. When surrounded by the Zombies by mistake and unable to move at all, use all your strength and break through (E).
 2. Search for a high place or door: Scan the surroundings for a high place or a door. If there is not any, keep running.
 3. Upon spotting one : Once you locate a high place or door, attempt to escape using the methods mentioned above.
< Melee Combat >
Combat may not always be the best choice for survival. However, it can be essential in response to certain situations. Survivors must always be prepared for any confrontation.

Since the use of firearms is restricted, you will be engaged in melee combat in most cases. Diverse weapons are used in melee combat.
Check out the pros and cons of the main types of weapons.

Each weapon within the same category can have a distinct trajectory or specific effects.
Using many different types of weapons and finding a weapon that matches your style should be beneficial to your survival.

Newly joined Survivors are recommended to use two-handed blunt weapons. These weapons typically have a long reach, making their attack range useful for creating distance from the Zombies and attacking them more easily.

However, they will consume a lot of your energy, and you will need to block or evade an attack while the energy refills. Additionally, wielding them creates loud noise, which could potentially draw the attention of the zombies.
Despite these risks, it is worth using them, as anyone can easily fend off the zombies while taking relatively less damage.

Lethal weapons with blades attached are never recommended. The Zombies do not feel any pain; the slashes by lethal weapons will be useless for blocking them while they can still attack people endlessly.
In other words, you have to fight while evading from the attacks of the Zombies.
However, it is something nearly impossible unless you are inherently talented.

In theory, with these dangerous weapons, you can defeat the Zombies more quickly without making a loud noise. However, this is the case for only a portion of the skilled Survivors who use them.
< Firearms Combat >
Firearms are very rare, so you will not have many chances to use them yourself. However, it is not unusual to face an enemy holding a gun toward you. This is because even in the ruined world, people save money by all means to buy only a few bullets when scouting. For this reason, rather than using firearms themselves, new Survivors are taught what to do when a gun is aimed at them.

The most common firearms are revolvers used by the police in the past. It is a short handgun that accommodates 6 bullets for reloading. Because bullets are too expensive, some people simply buy guns and carry them only for the purpose of posing a threat.

▶ How to use Firearms
Guns usually miss the target without aiming (right-click). While aiming, make sure to pull the trigger when the reticle is aligned with the opponent. Firing while moving or inaccurately aiming is just a waste of expensive bullets. Therefore, always take the time to aim properly before pulling the trigger.

▶ How to Survive from Firearm Attacks
You might find yourself in a situation where another Survivor you’ve just confronted and points a gun at you.
Reality is not like a movie or a game; it is very likely that the bullet will miss you unless the opponent is at a close distance.
Therefore, as soon as the opposing survivor takes out and aims a gun at you, hide behind nearby cover or move left and right to avoid their line of sight, reducing the chances of being shot.
Since reaction speed really matters in firearms combat, keep in mind that you can potentially be aimed at and shot at any time.
The Survivors with a higher survival rate often have the habit of taking cover when they spot other Survivors.
