DEVELOPER JOURNAL #7 - Monsters Pt. 3 🦌

Welcome!
[p]I Hate This Place comes out in 2 days! So let's go to the last part of the Monsters research...
We tackled Arachnoids, we tackled Mutants, but there are many more dangerous types of enemies in the f**ked up world of I Hate This Place. Some of those enemies may actually seem tame and adorable, but once you start looking closer you notice all the unsettling details and ungodly mutations. So don’t come too close, even though it’s very, VERY tempting…[/p][p]

Similar to spiders there are 3 levels of ā€œMutated Deerā€ enemies. Creepy Fawn is the equivalent of the spiderlings. It is a basic enemy, it looks like a mutated fawn, with some creepy appendages and no proper head. It has tentacles sprawling from the body. It doesn’t really attack but it follows you and stares menacingly. If you overstay your welcome, soon there can be many, MANY more of them.

Once killed, it lets out one final gurgling scream of despair, but there is also a chance of the more deadly deer variety to start attacking, even causing a stampede.[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]As you may have guessed, a Mutated Deer is an older version of the fawn that is much more deadly. Its wither height is more or less the height of Elena. The looks of it are very unnerving, sprawling some tentacles and some other uncanny elements like eyes covering its body. It attacks by either trying to charge at you to impale on its horns or simply attack with its hoofs in close range. Sometimes there is a stampede attack, where a large group of those mutated deer run through the forest and can trample the player.Ā
The deer are not always aggressive, sometimes they just watch and follow the player, just like the fawns. But you never know when one may change its mind about being nice to you, so stay alert and on your guard.[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]There is one more type of deer that is much more mysterious, much older and much more dangerous. Nobody has ever seen it in the wild, but there were some big areas with overthrown trees marked by stampede marks or blown up containers. Sometimes there, you can smell some toxic and suffocating chemicals, presumably secretions of that ominous deer enemy.

[/p][p]There are rumours that it is so formidable not only because of its size and overwhelming musk, but also that his body has mutated so much, becoming capable of standing on 2 feet despite its stature.[/p][p] [/p][p]That’s all for now. We tackled most of the monstrosities hunting Elena in I Hate This Place!Ā  The rest you will have to discover yourself :)

80s-themed survival horror I Hate This Place is a gentler Darkwood based on a celebrated comic series

If you find Darkwood too dark, perhaps you will like I Hate This Place, an isometric (is it, tho?) survival horror based on the comic book of the same name from Kyle Starks and Artyom Topilin. I Hate This Place is dark – it has hungry tentacle nests, antlered stalkers, and spiders of many sizes – but going by the trailer, at least, it’s nothing like as harrowing and hollowing as the Acid Wizard game. The colours are bright and splashy, the munsters, funky: think Stranger Things.

It occurs to me that we need a thematic darkness scale for ā€˜dark’ video games, perhaps comparable to ocean depth categorisation. I’d say Darkwood is right down there in the hadopelagic trenches. I Hate This Place? A denizen of the upper bathypelagic (Midnight) zone, so far. Here's that trailer.

DEVELOPER JOURNAL #6 - Monsters Pt. 2 🧟

Welcome!
[p]Last time, we shared some very useful information about how to deal with the spiders of the I Hate This Place world. Now, we need to tackle something different - The Mutants. Mutants are mostly indoor creatures who hide in the underground facilities and tunnels. It’s unclear what caused the mutations and how long have they been in this form, but one thing is certain… They are hunting YOU![/p][p]
Centaurs are mostly blind and use noise to detect people walking by. It may seem easy to avoid them, but they are much smarter than you think. They have their own routines, they change their behaviour depending on your moves and they are fiercely defending their territory. Even if you start fleeing, it may even destroy parts of the environment just to try and catch you. Don’t get too close to them as they will for sure notice your presence and try to embrace you very strongly - and it’s not going to be cute when they crush you in this hug either…  [/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]Mobs are similar to centaurs as in they are also mostly blind and will use their hearing abilities to detect you. They like playing around with dead bodies which results in very disturbing noises echoing through corridors. They use their big hands to shield against enemy attack and bullets, so it’s better to try and strike from behind.Ā

[/p][p]As with the centaur, getting near to a mob may result in a very crushing embrace or getting thrown across the room by their additional hand.Ā [/p][p]The name of this mutant may be misleading, because Hands are more like mutated tentacles prowling the corridors than a literal hand. Nonetheless, you will feel their grab if they hear you running around the underground facilities. The more noise you make, the faster it will try and pull you to itself. You have to respond fast, because if your escape from the tentacles is unsuccessful, then you will be crushed[/p][p]Hands are mostly an environmental hazard than an enemy in the usual sense, but don’t underestimate it because of that. It may not change its position, but it’s just as deadly as the other mutants. [/p][p]That’s all for now. Next time, we will tackle some other monstrosities hunting Elena in I Hate This Place!Ā  Let us know what you would like us to showcase in the future through those Developer Journals! We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments šŸ™‚[/p][p][/p][h2]Can't wait?
