Between GTA 6, Doom The Dark Ages, and Monster Hunter Wilds, there's a lot to look forward to in 2025. But for the moment, the Elden Ring Nightreign beta has our collective attention. Largely, I feel like it's because the premise is still a little mysterious. We know it's got a roguelike structure. We know that you play Nightreign in teams of four. But having spent the last 16 years perfecting the brutally hard, soulslike formula, the new Elden Ring game is an intriguing twist in direction by FromSoftware. The beta starts soon and thousands if not millions of people are lined up to try the RPG spin-off. If you bagged an invite, From has good news.

How badly do you want to play the Elden Ring Nightreign beta? Invites to the upcoming network test have already been sent out by FromSoftware and the first live demo for the RPG and roguelike is scheduled to begin on Friday February 14. Of course, there are some people who applied to play and didn't get access, and if you're one of them, and you're feeling especially forlorn, well, there's good news and bad news. The good news is that you can buy your way into Shadow of the Erdtree's co-op follow-up. The bad news is that it could cost you the same as a brand-new GPU.

If you want to play the Elden Ring Nightreign beta, FromSoftware has an update

Even by the standards of FromSoftware and the Dark Souls formula, Shadow of the Erdtree was, at times, absolutely brutal. If you've ground your way through the Lands Between, finishing off the Elden Ring DLC in style, you'd be forgiven for wanting some form of reprieve, a nice, long break to play something calmer, kinder. But the Elden Ring Nightreign beta, also known as the network test, is already almost upon us. A roguelike spin on the sadistic fantasy RPG, Nightreign pits you and three comrades against successively hard mobs and bosses in a white-knuckle fight for survival. If you applied to play it before launch, FromSoftware may have already been in touch.

Elden Ring Nightreign won't have Dark Souls' best feature, but for good reason

I adore FromSoftware's take on multiplayer design. Instead of waiting in a lobby with friends or accepting an invite to join a game in progress, the studio's online functionality has its own character. You can watch the spectral recordings of fallen players, offer to help those in need where they need it most, and by far my favorite, write messages on the floor. These can be helpful, make no sense, or outright trick you, and this dynamic makes FromSoftware's games, from Dark Souls to Elden Ring, feel truly alive. That's why I'm sad to report then that these messages won't return for Elden Ring Nightreign, but it's for a good reason.
