The Whims of the Gods News

Let's look at the backstage #6

Hello city-builder fans!

Welcome to another episode of “Let’s look at the backstage”, where we reveal what’s happening behind the curtain of our production, showcase dev work, share concept art, and show off mechanics coming to the final game.

But hey! Life isn’t only about serious stuff. And since we are definitely humans (despite rumors), let’s laugh together at… The Whims of the Gods! Here are four hilarious bugs that made us both cry and giggle. Thankfully, most of them are already long gone!

OK, citizens! Let's go!

HAMMER IN THE WORKER'S HEAD

Ever told your boss: “Sorry, I’m not coming in today, I’ve got a horrible headache”? Well, whether the pain comes from tiredness… or a hammer inside your skull, our villagers never try that excuse. Definitely not because they don’t have phones!

Here’s what’s going on: every tool used by workers is “attached” to their bodies in specific points called sockets. These are fixed spots on a character’s skeleton - like the hand, spine, etc. Each socket has its own position and rotation, and tools themselves don’t always have a perfect center. Combine those two and boom! A hammer in the brain. Game logic approved.

A TRUE MASTER OF CHILL

Look at this guy. He works by resting and rests by working. Even Michael Jackson’s moonwalk seems easy compared to carrying a heavy basket… while sitting in the air.

What caused this? Characters play different animations based on states like “resting,” “carrying items,” or “gathering resources.” Those states include standing, sitting, and crouching — depending on where the action takes place.

Our chill worker was sent to a warehouse with a full basket while he was still sitting in the wrong part of the building. The game thought he was still resting… even though he was clearly on duty. A true multitasker.

BOAT RIDE... ACROSS THE BRIDGE

Have you ever seen a worker sailing to work… across a bridge? Walking is boring, so this villager chose backdoor boat parkour to test the bridge’s durability.

The fisherman class has special skills (like sailing) that he activates only on water. And technically… the game did think he was on water. Why? A small mistake in the zone setup. A tiny boat-allowed area leaked onto the bridge. The villager stepped on it, the game yelled: “💧 WATER DETECTED!”, and off he went.

Is it realistic? Nope. Is it hilarious? Absolutely. Will we fix it? Okay, let's move on…

IT'S TIME TO START THE EXORCISM

The gods demand majestic rituals. But instead of a calm prayer animation, here we see someone trying to escape an exorcism.

What happened? The character was supposed to smoothly transition from standing to praying.
But the animation got stuck halfway. So instead of holy devotion, we got supernatural shivering. Mechanically, the system couldn’t decide if the character should still stand or start praying — so it rapidly switched states. The result? Divine convulsions.

Did the gods accept the ritual? Hard to say. But they probably enjoyed the show.

We’ve got more of these backstage stories, and we’re fixing every bug one step at a time. If you want even more dev chaos, join our Discord! We share way more goodies there than we do here.

See you next time!
