Items– silent helpers of your quest!
[p]A procedural, ever-changing game comes with its own set of challenges. As we are unable to study and practice levels, there should be a new angle to help us sort the challenges. And so we had one thing clear in the development process: climbers would need something to aid their quest![/p][p]Perhaps it was more accurate to think of someTHINGS rather than just one: and so we brought \ITEMS\ into the scene. Of course, we’d need a great variety of them; in matters of taste, there are no fixed rules![/p][p]Eldritch Climb is a quirky game with mechanics of its own, a catalogue of enemies that remix the worst and iconic horrors of classic literature, and for the items we thought of two ways to interact with them: \hand items\ and \passive items\.[/p][p]
[/p]
Hand Items
[p]What is that default item 99% of the climbers have installed since day one? HANDS. And yes, we certainly loved that plural right there! Because the only thing better than a hand, is having two hands. So, with that thought in mind, it became obvious to us that we should allow the climbers to \possess two items simultaneously\.[/p][p]This opened up the possibility to a mix-match couple of items for the players to explore. And we began to brainstorm the possibilities! Either items with an offensive or defensive, perhaps something to assist in the climb or even prevent a certain type of damage appeared. The idea behind this varied catalogue? To let the players decide \which combo suits them best\![/p]
Passive Items
[p]You probably have a friendship bracelet from a concert you went a while ago. Or perhaps you keep that trading card that brought you luck back in the day. This idea of possessing something to be there passively to help you sort the day-to-day conflicts felt like a necessity in a mountain full of horrid creatures.[/p][p]The idea behind this type of item is to provide the player with an \extra leverage on their quest\. Either to help them navigate better, to offer a bit of an advantage against enemies and environmental damage… and more.[/p][p]
[/p]
Chests? Corpses? They both begin with a “C”!
[p]As we needed a way to make these items accessible to the users, we thought that environmental storytelling corpses would be the best way to do so. After all, why not pay a bit of homage to those climbers who had a worse fate than you?[/p][p]And maybe \
