I hate the survival genre, but Witchspire may just change my mind

There are very few game genres I hate. I'm not a sports fan, for example, so while I'll happily cheer on the Texans during NFL season, you won't catch me playing Madden. Similarly, I'm not a fan of games that mimic real life; I want to roleplay as a magical spell-slinging mage, being a mafia don simply doesn't do it for me. But survival games are perhaps my least favorite of all. The idea of chopping down trees for hours on end while simultaneously managing hunger, thirst, and my own IRL sanity is an absolute chore, and even the most fantastical entries in the genre like Runescape Dragonwilds and V Rising consistently fail to hold my attention. When I learned that Envar Studio's debut title, Witchspire, was, indeed, a survival experience, my heart sank a little - the trailer was amazing, and the aesthetics are perfect, but could I overcome the aforementioned thirst, hunger, and depression? At Gamescom 2025 I sat down with head of studio Liam O'Neill and game director Oliver Granlund for a guided tour of Witchspire's magical world and, maybe, just maybe, I've found the survival challenge for me.

Without further ado…[/p][previewyoutube][/previewyoutube][h3]Create your very own Witch [/h3][p]Our goal with Witchspire is to create the ultimate magical fantasy game. You’ll be creating your witch or wizard, choosing your coven to gain specialised starter passives, and growing your magic as you master spells and hone your skills with a branching tech tree. And yes, you'll be able to customise your witch or wizard to your liking![/p][p][/p][h3]Survival Made Magical [/h3][p]Survival for a witch is a little bit different than regular humans. Your powers of astral projection can be used to freely build your Sanctum, or you can mine nearby ore with phantom pickaxes - you'll just need to make sure you've trained up your skills for some of those bigger spells. The resources you gather can be used for crafting useful gear and building your base! But just because you have magic at your fingertips, doesn’t mean you won’t need some assistance… [/p][p][/p][h3]Make New Friends [/h3][p]The world of Witchspire is also teeming with creatures for you to meet, battle and befriend. In the world of witchcraft, the creatures who become allies are called familiars! Your familiars can be trusted allies in combat, adorable helpers that keep your Sanctum up and running, or friends to build lasting bonds with! There will even be some starter familiars for you to choose from so that you're never alone![/p][p][/p][h3]A Mysterious World to Explore[/h3][p]Whether it’s grabbing a broomstick or using your magic to spirit jump and reach new heights, you’ll be exploring a range of diverse environments and biomes featuring ancient ruins, scorching deserts and frosty mountains. The world you’ll find yourself in is beautiful, but there is also a darkness which lurks beneath the surface. So be wary and if you see a comet hurtling through the sky, we suggest running.[/p][p][/p][p]We appreciate all the love and support we have received so far, and we’ll be sharing more details (including gameplay!) in the coming months and weeks ahead of our Early Access launch!
