Developer Note – May 9, 2025

Hello, Ascenders!

Ascend to ZERO demo has received a tremendous amount of interest and support, and we sincerely thank you.

During our ongoing small patches, the development team has engaged in extensive discussions based on your valuable feedback and play data. While deeply considering the core fun and areas for improvement in the current A2Z, we’ve also organized ideas for our future direction.

In this post, we’d like to share the experiences that our team has personally identified as needing improvement, along with our planned short-term actions and long-term vision.


[h3]Revamping the Item System to Bring Back the Thrill of Farming[/h3]



The mid-to-late-game progression of Ascend to ZERO begins with farming.

Since the prototype stage, the synergy between farming rewards and progression has provided the core fun and motivation of A2Z, and we wanted to convey this experience more deeply and clearly.

However, as we’ve focused on harmonizing content, the thrill of farming has become somewhat blurred. To address this, we are preparing the following directions:


Visualizing Powerful Rewards
  • We recognized that the strength of items wasn’t immediately apparent, and players lacked a tangible sense of impact when using them.
  • Moving forward, we will enhance visual presentations and effects so that the feeling of “I have to get this” becomes more pronounced.
Expanding Diverse Farming Routes
  • We’ve noticed that certain rare items only appeared under specific conditions, making them hard to access.
  • We plan to expand diverse routes for obtaining valuable items.
Introducing an Item Enhancement System
  • We’ve felt disappointed that, despite attachment to favorite items, there was no way to further upgrade them.
  • We’re preparing a system that enables post-farming “follow-up progression,” such as stat modifications and enhancements.



[h3]Strengthening Build Identity and Strategic Depth[/h3]



Since the recent introduction of a simple character build system, many of you have commented positively that the gameplay experience feels fresh.

However, we feel there is still room to expand the experience of building builds and the distinctiveness and depth of resulting playstyles in various ways.

Therefore, we plan to strengthen the build system in the following ways:
  • We’ll add Tech Chips that clearly distinguish playstyles, allowing you to experiment with build variations each run.
  • We’re also preparing powerful Tech Chips with accompanying risks. We aim to deliver both the tension of choice and the thrill of reward that amplify the roguelike fun.



[h3]Balancing Melee vs Ranged Combat[/h3]



Through multiple tests and data analysis, we confirmed that the risk-reward of melee combat is currently insufficient.

While it bears more burden in pattern evasion and positioning, its rewards haven’t been sufficient.

Rather than simply tweaking numbers, we intend to improve this by ensuring that the risk-reward for character build specialization is clear in the following ways:
  • We’ll introduce dedicated Tech Chips and patterns that empower melee builds, and rebalance monster placements and patterns to reduce unfair play experiences.
  • We’ll avoid structures where melee build advantages also benefit ranged builds, adjusting so that each combat style’s identity and role naturally stand out.



[h3]Ongoing Language Support[/h3]



With the hope that A2Z reaches Ascenders around the world, we will be adding ongoing language support. We’re also pleased to announce that the French beta version has been added in today’s update!

Demo Update - May 2, 2025

The key fixes and improvements included in the May 2 demo update are as follows.


[h3]⚪ New Additions[/h3]



  • Beta translations for Spanish and Russian have been added!
  • Beta languages will be continuously improved through updates; please report any awkward translations via the Steam community and Discord!


[h3]⚪ Game Terminology Improvements[/h3]
  • Improved the clarity and simplified terms used for in-game currency, choices, items, and more.


[h3]⚪ Bug Fixes[/h3]
  • Fixed an issue where the HUD weapon DPS display option did not function correctly in some situations.
  • Improved instances where UI text could overflow designated boundaries.
  • Fixed an issue where enhancements could be incorrectly applied to character-specific tech chips in certain scenarios.


[h3]⚪ Art & Visual Improvements[/h3]
  • The Time Machine’s model and visuals have been improved.
  • Added exclusive drop effects for powerful items.

Demo Update – April 25, 2025

This April 25 update includes the following key fixes and improvements.



[h2]⚪ Balance Changes[/h2]

[h3]Health Leech Effect[/h3]

  • We discovered that the Health Leech effect was so powerful in certain situations that it rendered your current HP effectively meaningless.
  • The amount of HP recoverable at once by the Health Leech effect has been significantly reduced, so that it functions as a meaningful strategic choice rather than a means of immortality.


[h3]Boss Pattern Difficulty[/h3]

  • We also found that for some bosses, being one-shotted by any hit created a negative combat experience.
  • To provide a fairer combat experience, we have toned down the difficulty and damage of certain patterns.




[h2]⚪ Bug Fixes[/h2]

  • Fixed a crash caused by memory-allocation issues during gameplay.
  • Fixed a quest-blocking issue if you quit immediately after rescuing an NPC.
  • Fixed an issue where, upon switching from keyboard/mouse to gamepad, the mouse’s last position would interfere with controls.
  • Improved consistency between keyboard and gamepad inputs in dialogue.




[h2]⚪ Quality of Life[/h2]

  • Enhanced feedback when fighting in areas above or below your level.
  • Improved visibility of guiding arrows during tutorials and quests.




[h2]⚪ Art & Visual Improvements[/h2]

  • Polished the entry animation when boarding the time machine and entering a stage.
  • Improved the return animation upon battle completion.
  • Enhanced the unlock animation when completing NPC unlock quests.

New Language Support! – April 18, 2025 Demo Update

Thank you for your continued interest in the demo version. We’ve prepared another update this week featuring brand-new additions and ongoing improvements.

[h3]⚪ New Language Support (Beta)[/h3]



We’ve added beta language support for Traditional Chinese, German, and Brazilian Portuguese! These localizations will continue to be refined, so if you spot any awkward phrasing, please let us know via the Steam Community or our Discord!


[h3]⚪ Weapon Damage Display[/h3]



A new UI has been added that lets you check the damage of each equipped weapon. Use it to discover which weapons are strongest and refine your collection and loadout strategies!



[h2]Fixes & Improvements[/h2]

In addition to new features, this update includes bug fixes and quality improvements. The main changes included in the April 18 update are as follows:

  • Fixed an issue where deleted items would still appear for sale in the shop.
  • Improved a memory accumulation issue that degraded performance during long sessions.
  • Fixed terrain entrapment issues when returning from a Rift Portal.
  • Fixed lingering UI when ending the game inside a Rift Portal.

  • Improved the presentation during the tutorial and game entry.
  • Improved terrain visuals and FX in certain stages.
