Exploring the Taskmaster House: The Lab

What does your dream house look like? A big cinema room? Perhaps it has a pool? Or a croquet lawn, that would be nice. What about a lab space? We’re talking a stark, wipe-clean area that has an air of veterinary surgery about it. For The Taskmaster and his overworked assistant it is an essential - after all, tasking is often a filthy undertaking.

The Lab isn’t quite like other laboratories, although its premise is somewhat similar - experiment with interesting stuff and get messy. Expect to find the apparatus you need to complete the task at hand and four plastic sheeting-lined walls, where pretty much anything goes. In contrast to last week where we headed outside to show you the luscious green garden and its luscious green lawn, this is a more functional space and one that is only as colourful as the mess you make in there!

When reimagining the Taskmaster House for VR, sometimes we had to make small changes to make it work with gameplay - this hasn’t been the case with the Lab. It's a surprisingly roomy, completely empty space perfect for helping players focus on the important parts of the task, and we’ve kept everything except the slight smell of rotten milk that still permeates the air. Of course - just because a task starts in the lab, it doesn’t always mean you have to stay in there! Taskmaster is about thinking outside the box, and unless the task specifically prevents certain actions there is nothing stopping you going outside and grabbing the wheelie bin for whatever nefarious purposes you see fit!

Exploring the Taskmaster House - The Garden

Like a contented Dad, last week we spent the day in the shed. Today we’ll be opening the doors and stepping out into the sunshine in the Taskmaster Garden!

The garden is central to the Taskmaster experience. It’s a versatile space that connects just about every area of the game together. It’s verdant, secluded and liberally peppered with objet d’art, tools and what can only be described as ‘bits and bobs’. In Taskmaster VR, The Garden is used for Tasks that need a bit more space than the various rooms of the house might normally provide - or for when more large scale creativity is the name of the game!

As part of our very important research we sent the Scallywag Arcade away team to both the Taskmaster House and the studio. While exploring the house we found it to be the ideal space for tackling tasks, although like all good movie stars, it’s smaller than you expect in person. For those tasks that require space, stepping out in the garden we found ample room for all kinds of frolics. Our aim is to give players of Taskmaster VR a feel for what a bright, enticing space this is and how ideal it is for tomfoolery and tasks that simply can't be confined by four walls.

If you are a Taskmaster sage you can expect to find all your show favourites out in the garden - from the bathtub and phonebox to the stage and its door to nowhere - as well as old friends like Ollie the Knight, Greg’s statue and a lifesize model milking cow named Linda. Did you know that Linda has working mechanical udders that are used for practicing milking? Or that she was formally named by Taskmaster alumni Rylan Clark after his mum?

Even if the virtual version is the first you have seen of the garden we think you’ll feel right at home indulging in a little mayhem amongst its menagerie of colourful characters.

Exploring The Taskmaster House - The Shed
Time for a Tour!
You’ll be spending a lot of time in the Taskmaster House, hidden away in a secret location somewhere in the little district of Chiswick in the UK - so why not get acquainted with your new home away from home before getting started on some VR tasking?

Though some tasks may restrict your available locations, you will more often than not have the run of the place. This means you'll get unfettered access to a decade’s worth of junk, odds and ends, bric-a-brac and - occasionally - useful tools and resources that will aid you in completing even the most fiendish of tasks. Need something sharp? Off you pop to the kitchen to rifle through the cutlery drawer! Looking for the perfect sized plank of wood? Perhaps the garage will have what you need!

Today, however, we’re looking at one of the most useful locations in the house that the more outdoorsy and dad-vibe types amongst you will find particularly appealing- The Shed!

For any soul brave enough to take on the piles of dusty cardboard boxes and the somewhat distressing smell, you’ll find all kinds of treasures in the shed - from sports equipment and balls of different sizes, to litter-picker-uppers and handheld vacuum cleaners. There’s even a little pile of almost-real rubber bricks, should they take your fancy - I’m sure they’ll be useful somehow.
Shed-loads of stuff!
The shed contains a mix of items that are permanent - they’ll always be there for you - and on occasion, some task-specific switch ups. A key part of the game is thinking outside the box - remember, there is never a single solution to a task. What matters is YOUR solution, and the Taskmaster House is here to help facilitate that - so matter what you might need, the shed is a great place to start looking for it.

California Dreamin' - The Taskmaster House in VR

Every season of Taskmaster has a theme - a whimsical redecorating of the house to reflect the current mood and fancies of the Taskmaster. From Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol to Steampunk, vegetables and the Wild West, the Taskmaster house has been redecorated more times than Alex has been allowed hot dinners - and your house in Taskmaster VR is no different.

Greg, Alex and the rest of the Taskmaster team have been gracious enough to allow us to design our own theme for TMVR, and we think it's a doozy. Greg’s been craving a little bit of sunshine recently, so we redecorated and gave him…

Endless summers, coastal adventures, and chill sunshine pop on the radio - welcome to California Tasking! Expect to see a symphony of pastel pinks and azure blues, subtle touches of warm gold and...plastic lawn flamingos - Alex has to stick to a budget after all!

We went through a lot of different theme ideas, but in the end we wanted one that reflected both our overall aesthetic direction, and that would support our core message - that the Taskmaster house is welcoming and full of life! You’ll be spending a lot of time here, and we want it to feel like home - even if some of the tasks may occasionally have you questioning that!

Designing a theme for the Taskmaster house has been a dream come true for all of us at Scallywag Arcade, and we’re so, so proud to have contributed to the world and story of Taskmaster.

One final thing…what would the Taskmaster House be without a beautiful, bespoke portrait of the Taskmaster? Drawing influence from the vibrant works of Matisse and Rousseau, our Taskmaster portrait embraces the spirit of vintage travel posters and incorporates the vibrant hues of Miami Vice - and we thought you might like to have one too!

Head over the Taskmaster VR Community Page to download a gorgeous mobile wallpaper, so you can take Greg with you wherever you go. Don’t forget to thank him!

What is Taskmaster VR?

If you are an avid (or even rabid) fan of Taskmaster then you’ll already know what you’re getting into - however, if you're new to this global comedy phenomenon then we’re here to walk you through it!

Taskmaster is an offbeat comedy game show created in the UK but popular with millions of fans all around the world. The premise is simple - you will be given a cornucopia of challenging and extraordinary tasks and charged with their completion by any means you see fit! Your efforts will then be judged by The Taskmaster, earning you sweet, delicious - and completely arbitrary - points. Yum yum yum.

Let’s start with The Taskmaster and his assistant. Legendary comedian Greg Davies is the titular Taskmaster - and what a mighty sight he is. A towering giant of a man, yet one who spends most of the show lounging on his golden throne. Greg is witty, unruffled and incredibly self assured - all ideal for passing judgement on whatever clever little loopholes you think you may have found.

His subservient assistant Little Alex Horne is the true brains behind the operation. Alex is the show’s creator and is the one who will dish out the tasks, as well as your ever-present guide and invigilator through the house and beyond. He’s always ready with a helpful comment reminding you of the rules, or to pedantically point out each and every mistake you make. A class act.

You’ll be doing most of your tasking in either the Taskmaster studio or the iconic Taskmaster House in the exotic borough of Chiswick, UK. Every task starts with a wax sealed letter - just open it up, read through your objectives, and begin as soon as the timer starts. Previous contestants have been tasked with finding hidden pineapples, hurling toilet rolls around an airport - or even running their own hotel for an afternoon - and with all Taskmaster VR’s tasks being designed exclusively for the game, you’ll need to expect the unexpected and be ready for anything.

Your job is to complete the task - however you see fit - within the constraints that Alex will place on you, and there is rarely a single correct way to do so! Use lateral thinking - and an entire house filled to the brim with all kinds of useful tat - to express yourself and complete the task your way.

Once the task is complete, judgement - and a score - is given by The Taskmaster. Expect laughs, questionably-constructive feedback - and for the truly outstanding, even a dash of admiration. He’s not a monster.

Tasks are grouped into episodes and the episodes form a series - which means we get a series champion who takes home a spectacular trophy modelled on Greg’s head. Imagine having that bad boy on your coffee table. And it being virtual means you don’t need to polish it every Sunday. Fantastic news.

It really is as simple as that! We’re so excited with the amazing response to Taskmaster VR, and we cannot wait for you to join us and show the world what you can do. Join hundreds of other Taskmaster fans on discord, or jump into the comments, and tell us what you’d like to see next!

Your time starts now!
