Depth Sunsetting Announcement and FAQ

Hello everyone and welcome to 2022! We hope you enjoyed your holiday celebrations. You may be wondering what is planned for Depth this year. On that note, we are announcing that the Retro-Future Christmas event was the last major content update for Depth. We understand that for some of you this won’t be a huge surprise, but we know this will be very disappointing for others and there will be anxiety that Depth will no longer be playable. This means there will be continuing events and that Depth will be supported, but there will not be further substantial new content updates, balance changes or similar in future for the game.

Depth has had an excellent run for 7+ years from its initial launch on the 3rd of November 2014 and we thank you all sincerely for the support! Following will be a FAQ to hopefully answer concerns and let you know what the future for the foreseeable future will look like.

FAQ Q: Why was this decision made?
A: Depth is a successful game and we’ve supported it for years, but we have new and exciting projects that we have decided to focus on for the future.

Q: What will happen with events?
A: Starting in February, there will be repeating events that will mix content from previous events. This means if there was a skin that you missed out on, you may get an opportunity to get it!

Q: Will there be a battlepass/supporter bundle with these repeating events?
A: No, there won’t be a battlepass or supporter bundle. Existing supporter bundle content will not be reused in the repeating events.

Q: Is there any potential for future new paid DLC?
A: Very unlikely.

Q: Is the consumables update going to still happen?
A: This planned change to consumables will not be implemented. There isn’t the development bandwidth to properly QA test it and then add it to the game.

Q: Will there still be a community bundle #3?
A: Like a few things, this was delayed due to limited development time and QA. We will approach some of the authors and ask them about their interest in potentially adding these skins to the game soon.

Q: Why not go free to play?
A: Free to play is often proposed as a solution for low-population multiplayer games, but this is without considering the issues that going free to play brings. For one thing, running a multiplayer game is not free as you need to pay for server costs. It also comes with an increased amount of time required for support and dealing with griefing/cheating plus other issues. Currently, Depth maintains itself through sales of the base game and not through aggressive microtransaction systems, which free to play would require substantial changes to work.

Q: So, what about making a Depth 2?
A: We have no plans to create Depth 2 and we feel we’ve explored everything we wanted to do with Depth as an IP for now.

Q: Can we still play Depth if servers are shut off in future?
A: If servers are shut off, you are still able to play Depth with bots or in private lobbies. Dedicated server software is also available to assist with creation of private servers as well.

Q: Will you allow mods or other user created content to be added to the game?
A: User made content may potentially be added to the game in future on a case by case basis.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to comment and we’ll do our best to answer them! Thank you for swimming alongside us for seven wonderful years. We are eternally grateful and hope to share exciting new things with you again.
