Programancer Dev Log #2

Lead developer Programancer shares more insights behind The Transylvania Adventure of Simon Quest (TASQ)!
Is there a difference in core vision you have for TASQ than your other projects?
Programancer: I'm very protective of TASQ, because it's something I've planned out start to finish back in 2019- I know exactly where I want it to go from the beginning of the game to the end of the game. I usually leave a lot of room for emergent design in my projects- Prison City especially had nothing but emergent design for every level, but TASQ is a different beast altogether! It's absolutely a "vision" of a game for me.
Perhaps this goes without saying, but what were some inspirations for TASQ?
Programancer: People will go for the lowest hanging fruit- Castlevania- or more specifically, Classicvania, and they're not wrong! I like having a hybrid of a large world to explore coupled with linear (albeit with branching path-havin) Mansions, but my primary inspiration is Zelda! Specifically Zelda 2 and Link's Awakening. I know it doesn't look like that, but the structure of the game mirrors those. Each town/area has a quest you need to complete to gain access to the mansions- you can go to them out of order and complete those quests if you want and you're free to explore, but every region is contained to its own quest. There are also lots of little details and oddities across the world- something Link's Awakening does very well.
So, why did you want Simon to go on a quest for what seems to be out of spite or envy over Stan's victory over Dracula?
Programancer: There's definitely more to Simon Quest's Quest (hehehhe) than it seems! There might be some personal reasons for it that aren't quite as shallow... But people will have to play to find out.
