September Devlog

Hi everyone!

This month, I have completed most of the battle-related codes, but the most important full-screen battle animation part has not yet started. Since we want to do it, we have to do it well. I will spend more time studying the details in the next month.

Now, let me introduce the arms customizing in Chaos Front.

In this game, our mercenary corps can buy many kinds of arms from Arms dealers and equip them with pilots. The attributes, talents, and skills of the pilots will bring many bonuses to the arms. In addition, we can spend credit points to customize these arms for a pilot in the factory.

As shown in the picture above, we can customize the Longbow for the three pilots Lycurgus, Pyrrhus, and Rossy. Each pilot has their own tendency, so the attributes added after customizing Longbow are also different.

When the customizing is completed, the name of this Longbow will become Longbow (Rossy), with an increase of 375 EN and 6 Agility. But these additional attributes will only take effect when Rossy drives it. When others drive it, the customized attributes will turn gray. Also, note that the customized attributes are not fixed. The higher the original attribute of the arms, the higher the transformation bonus attribute will be.

Combining different arms and different pilots, we can combine different customized units in a targeted manner to further exert the power of our mercenary corps.

That's all for today. I will continue to develop the battle animation function. See you next month!

August Devlog & DEMO Delay Announcement

Hi everyone!

This month, I've finished most of the development of the big map gamesystem and found a way of using many forms to make complex mission levels. But as development progresses, I realize that I might be able to finish a usable DEMO in October, but it would be far from polished. Releasing it would probably disappoint everyone.

As a result, I had to regretfully pass on participating in the Steam Next Fest in October. The release of Chaos Front DEMO will be delayed until the next Steam Next Fest, which will be in February 2025. This October, I will release the first trailer for Chaos Front instead.

I deeply apologize for the delay of the DEMO. And, the release of the official version of Chaos Front will not change, it will still be in the spring of 2025, maybe around two months after the release of the DEMO.

Now, let's move on to the other two factions we didn't finish introducing last month.

Massilia was the first planet in the Centersea Sector to be colonized by humans, and as such became the shipping center of the entire Sector. At the time of the establishment of the Astronautical Committee, the then president of the local government of Massilia sold out the interests of the people and established the Principality of Massilia with the support of Three Super Powers, proclaiming himself the Duke of the Massilia, anointing the military officers and politicians who supported him as nobles, and suppressing Massilia as the Committee's henchmen.

With the monopoly of the Committee, Massilia lost its former status as a shipping center and its people fell into poverty. Anger accumulated for over twenty years, and a storm of revolution finally overthrew the Principality's government, and the staff, students, soldiers, and workers ...... of the newly formed Revolutionary Council became the masters of Massilia.

The first citizen of the revolutionary government was Charlotte, the Speaker of the Republic. She had worked as a lawyer for five years helping the poor people in their lawsuits and gradually realized that the greatest source of the people's suffering was precisely the exploitation of the Astronautical Committee and that only the overthrow of the Committee's tyranny throughout the galaxy could bring true happiness. With her determined lobbying and organizing, many important political and military figures joined the revolution. After the founding of the Republic, Charlotte was elected Speaker of the Republic. In the minds of the people, she seemed to be the embodiment of uncorrupted revolutionary ideals.

The Black Flag, an ally of the Revolutionary Army, was originally the Fleet Tertius of the Committee Army from the Qilin Dynasty. During the Great Rebellion that destroyed the Old Union, the Qilin Dynasty, which once had hopes of unifying the galaxy, fell into schism when the Emperor was poisoned and died. The Eight Wardens, who commanded the Eight Legions as the Emperor's arms, fought each other and lost half of their power in political struggles, plots assassinations, and bloody wars. In the end, the House Yuan became the highest-ranking Grand Warden, married the daughter to the new emperor, and became the behind-the-scenes ruler. The Qilin Dynasty, which had suffered a great deal of damage, also lost its ambition and accepted the proposal made by the other Super Powers to co-manage the Galaxy in the form of the Committee.

The House Li, one of the Eight Wardens, survived the hegemonic government politics of the Grand Warden due to humility and luck and got through a succession for the House head. However, the powerful House Li was always suspected by the House Yuan. With the outbreak of the Centersea War, the three Super Powers were obliged to send their fleets to suppress Massilia. Grand Warden Yuan Wen came up with the idea of killing two birds with one stone by ordering Li Cunyi, the head of the House Li, to lead the Li's subordinates in an expedition to Centersea Sector as the Commander-in-Chief of the Fleet Tertius. This not only banished Li Cunyi from the power center of the dynasty but also depleted the reputation and strength of the House Li in a war without righteousness.

However, after the House Li fleet arrived at the Bazhou Planet in the Centersea Sector, Li Cunyi suddenly ordered the entire army to remove the flag of the Qilin Dynasty, paint their ships and arms black, expel all the committee bodies in the neighboring planets, and send out alliance emissaries to the Revolutionary Army. The Black Flag was born. Li Cunyi, who has been humbling in silence for a mission no one knows, finally rises as a dragon emerges from the abyss and is about to start the legend of the Black Admiral.

That's all for today, let's look forward to next month's trailer!

July DevLog: Committee Army

Hello everyone!

The Demo of Chaos Front is in the final two months of development. In this dev log, let me talk about the lore of the Committee Army.

The picture below is a map of the Centersea War, which has been deadlocked in AC 25. The red planets are controlled by the Massilian Revolutionary Army, the black planets are controlled by the Black Flag, the purple planets are controlled by the Fleet Primus of Committee Army, the blue planets are controlled by the Fleet Secundus of Committee Army, and the green planet is the neutral city planet Kowloon.

As a tool for the three Superpowers to rule the galaxy, the Astronautical Committee controls the interstellar shipping of the entire galaxy. Each planetary government and enterprise must pay a huge shipping management fee regularly to obtain authorization to send ships for inter-system navigation. Unauthorized spaceships, including the vessel and cargo, will be confiscated by the Committee's gendarmerie and will be directly shot down if they resist. Through this means, in just 25 years, the Astronautical Committee has accumulated huge wealth, and the three Superpowers have also obtained huge economic benefits through privileges.

Faced with the revolution launched by Massilia, the Astronautical Committee decided that the three Superpowers would send fleets, allocate military funds from the Committee's treasury, and form a joint army to conquer Massilia. However, the Fleet Tertius from the Qilin Dynasty suddenly announced its separation from the Committee Army in Bazhou and became independent from the Qilin Dynasty, called itself the Black Flag, and formed an alliance with the Massilian Revolutionary Army. Therefore, the Committee Army in the Centersea War only included the Fleet Primus from the Republic of Legions and the Fleet Secundus from the Shining Federation.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Fleet Primus was Marshal Crassus, one of the Five Marshals of the Republic of Legions. He was one of the most powerful warlords in RoL. Once he could lead the army to quell the Massilian Revolution, he would have a great chance of seizing the throne of the Imperator of RoL. But unexpectedly, under the resistance of the Revolutionary Army and the Black Flag, the Centersea War fell into a stalemate. Crassus was full of anger at the traitors and struggled hard in the political quagmire.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Fleet Secundus was General Dwight of the Shining Federation. Rather than saying that he was a military strategist who was good at leading troops in battle, it was better to say that he was a politician who was good at coordination and personnel management. Within the SF, there was also a political trend against sacrificing soldiers for the Committee and demanding that the Shining Federation's own interests take precedence. Therefore, in the Centersea War, the Fleet Secundus was not as active as the Fleet Primus.

In Chaos Front, our mercenary corps can not only participate in the battle to assist the Committee Army but also learn about the people and secrets within these organizations through various missions and get involved in related major events.

That's all for this devlog. Let's talk more next month!

June DevLog: Combat Mode

Hello everyone!

In this devlog, let me introduce the concept of "Combat mode" in Chaos Front.

On the battlefield, the enemy and our army fight as a chess game with multiple units. Each unit may be a single ship, a single large arms, or a squad of up to three small arms.

The arms in each squad are numbered 1, 2, or 3, and in close combat, both sides fight individually with #1 against #1, #2 against #2, and #3 against #3. If #2 or #3 has no opponent with the same number, they will attack the opposite #1.

As shown in the picture below, the three mecha of the Revolutionary Army launched close combat against the three mecha of our Lycurgus Corps. Revolutionary Army squad's arms #1, #2, and #3 shoot to attack our #1, #2, and #3 respectively. Our #1 melee back against enemy #1, our #2 shoot back against enemy #2, and our #3 is dodging. In addition, our #1 uses the skill Heavy Blow to increase damage and our #2 uses the skill Effort to gain more exp.

All our units can choose available actions and skills during combat.

Below is a Revolutionary Army ship range attack our squad, and unlike close combat, it is impossible to return fire against enemy range attack. However, it is still possible to use power shields or dodge it.

The picture below shows our impactor ramming an enemy mecha squad.

Notice that a red indicator appears underneath the enemy ship in front of the enemy mecha squad being rammed. When the enemy mecha Squad is knocked back, it will collide with the enemy ship, dealing additional damage to them. This is the special ability of the ram weapons. Assuming that the ramming takes place at the edge of the map, it can drive the enemy right off the battlefield.

In addition to the close combat, range bombard, and ramming mentioned above, there are several other combat modes, including space mines and psychic weapons. Let's experience and study them in the future game.

That's all for this devlog. Let's talk more next month!

May DevLog: Formation

Hello everyone!

Over the past two months, I have finished designing most of the Chaos Front UI. Now, it's time to start coding. I'm aiming to release the game demo in October, which is four months away!

In this devlog, I want to introduce the concept of 'Formation' in Chaos Front.

Units in the game are divided into two main categories: Ships and Arms. Arms are further divided into two types: small and large. S-type units like Mecha and fighters can be stacked in squads of up to three, while L-type units like Artillery and Titans cannot be stacked with other arms. Since arms can't travel long distances in space on their own, they need to be carried on a ship to reach the mission target.

Our mercenary corps can deploy a maximum of four ships in the strike force. Each ship has a specific number of small and large hangars. Small arms can be placed in both types of hangars, but large arms can only be placed in large hangars. For example, the Impactor has three small hangars and one large hangar, while the Freighter only has three small hangars. It's important to note that all units in the strike force must have a captain or pilot.

Different missions have a limit of 1-4 ships. Even for missions with a limit of one ship, you can send 4 ships full of arms to strike. However, this will cost you extra maintenance and may even offset the mission rewards gained.

On the battlefield, ships can provide ability bonuses to arms within a certain command range. When the arms are low on HP and EN (Energy), they can return to the ship to recover. However, it's important to note that all HP and EN recovered are deducted from that ship's EN. When a ship is destroyed, all arms inside are also destroyed.

Additionally, ships can carry up to 4 items while weapons can carry up to 2 items. These items can provide restoration and ability enhancements. For example, the Repairer can restore HP, and the Thruster can dramatically increase the unit's movement in a turn.

The game's settings are still being refined and adjusted. Even after the demo is completed, further adjustments will be made based on your suggestions. That's all for this devlog. Let's talk more next month!
