In this development log, we will introduce the zombie design rework of The Midnight Walkers.

[h2][Design Concept][/h2]
The zombie characters that have been redesigned this time are based on occupations that can be frequently seen in the zombie world, and the goal is to provide a more realistic and intuitive sense of fear.
We are trying to increase the immersion in the game by turning real occupations such as firefighter zombies, police zombies, rider zombies, and high-class zombies into zombies while dealing with zombies.

[h3]● Firefighter Costume Zombie[/h3]



- Appearance:
They wear fire suits and helmets, and have burn marks.
They move clumsily due to their heavy equipment, but are designed to look like they have high defense or health.

- Story:
They were originally under Mr. Nobody. However, they rebelled due to their dissatisfaction with Mr. Nobody, but were eventually subdued and punished by being put in charge of maintenance work for the survival show held at Liberty Grand Center.
While preparing to renovate and reopen the place after the survival show ended, they were infected by zombies that were left behind while artificially introducing zombies into the show or while putting out a fire that had spread with Molotov cocktails.
However, there is no need for sympathy. They are not honorable beings.
Their greed and betrayal caused internal divisions within the Mr. Nobody organization, and their downfall was self-inflicted.
In the zombie world, the scariest thing is not zombies. It is people.

[h3]● Front and Military Uniform Zombie[/h3]



- Appearance:
They have traces of wearing bulletproof vests, helmets, and military gear, and their rotten skin is characteristic.
They are designed to look difficult to deal with because of their job characteristics of military training and combat gear.

- Story:
They made a living as mercenary soldiers or riot squads during their lifetime, and acted as the main military force of Mr. Nobody. After the spread of the virus, they were hired to suppress riots and coups, and played a key role in maintaining order under Mr. Nobody's power.
However, in the process, there were personnel who suffered serious injuries from unexpected accidents or were attacked by zombies, and Mr. Nobody showed cruelty by turning them into zombies instead of killing them and using them for survival shows.
This is because survival shows always need zombies.
As they were once powerful beings who protected Liberty Grand Center, it is said that survival shows became very difficult to survive and escape after they were turned into zombies.

[h3]● Rider Costume Zombie[/h3]



- Appearance:
Designed to look like a fast-moving zombie wearing a bicycle helmet and light sports clothing.

- Story:
They are in charge of light material supply at Liberty Grand Center, and their primary means of transportation is bicycles.
In the world of The Midnight Walkers, electric vehicles are so valuable that they are only used when moving large quantities of materials or high-ranking officials, and general material deliveries are made by bicycle. They are responsible for quickly delivering important resources and information by bicycle.
Success brought great rewards, but failure brought a cruel fate of death or transformation into a zombie.
Before the infection, they were a vital link between survivors, playing a key role in delivering resources and information between other survivor camps and Liberty Grand Center. Success in delivering brought them great fame and rewards, but they paid a harsh price in the form of zombie transformation due to unexpected or intentional accidents.

[h3]● High-end Clothing Zombie[/h3]



- Appearance:
His once clean purple shirt, vest, and suit pants are now torn and dirty, hinting at his pre-infection social status. The glowing red eyes indicate that the infection has progressed, and the large body is designed to feel like a threatening presence capable of making slow but powerful attacks.

- Story:
This zombie is a high-ranking figure who fell victim to a power struggle at Liberty Grand Center.
In life, he played a prominent role in the community due to his resources and power, but he was pushed out of the internal power struggle and became the target of a conspiracy. His rivals deliberately infected him in order to eliminate him, and the person he trusted most was his wife.
For many years, he trusted her as his companion and political partner, but his wife secretly plotted to gain power for him. Eventually, she colluded with his enemies and forcibly threw him into the zombie horde.
He struggled to survive, but was eventually transformed into a zombie, and now he had no choice but to show the survivors his anger toward the wife he once trusted.

[h2][Planning and Development Intention][/h2]
The zombies that have been reworked this time have not yet been confirmed in terms of their detailed stats, such as their functions and health.
The zombies' stories are also the same.
Currently, we are focusing only on the external changes to provide a visually new experience.
This is to flexibly develop the zombies' abilities and characteristics by collecting various feedbacks from the upcoming playtests.

In addition, we plan to measure the psychological effect of the zombies' appearances on gameplay through A/B testing of the existing zombies and the zombies with the reworked design. Through this process, we plan to secure basic data for adjusting the game balance and scaling the difficulty.

Currently, the appearance has simply changed, but the roles and stats of each zombie may be specified based on the test results in the future. Through this, we plan to design certain zombies to play a more important tactical role in the game.

We are currently improving the abilities and visual details of various zombie characters, and testing the challenges and threats each zombie will present to survivors in the game.
We will continue to update the various zombie types to further enhance the abilities and visuals of zombies through additional feedback, and to provide players with new combat strategies.

In this development log, we want to talk about the design process and role of the zombie, Screecher, in The Midnight Walkers.

[h2][Design Concept][/h2]

Screecher is designed as a female character, with distinctive features such as her face, body, and hands, all carefully crafted to leave a strong impression on survivors.

[h2][Visual Features][/h2]

● Face and Head: Screecher’s face is severely decayed, with a metal device attached to her mouth. This detail hints at a disturbing experiment she might have undergone before becoming a zombie. Ultimately, the depth of the design aims to evoke a sense of dread when survivors encounter Screecher.

● Body: Screecher's body is covered with significant wounds and deformities. Her skin bears deep scars, and some organs are exposed. All these details reflect her painful transformation process.

● Clothing: Screecher wears either a hospital gown or patient attire, hinting at her life before she became a zombie. These outfits connect her past and present, allowing survivors to speculate about her human life.

[h2][Mutated Physical Features][/h2]

● Hands: Screecher’s hands have been elongated and sharpened, designed to deliver a deadly strike to survivors. The length and sharpness of her fingers further emphasize Screecher’s terrifying nature.

● Skin Lesions: Screecher’s skin is covered with grotesque, tumor-like lesions. These lesions appear almost parasitic, further amplifying the abnormal mutation caused by the zombie virus.

[h2][In-Game Abilities and Design Intentions][/h2]

[h3]- In-Game Abilities[/h3]

● Zombie Calling: If possible, avoid entering Screecher's detection range. If you spot Screecher alone, it’s recommended to take her out quickly. Screecher lets out a distinct screech, a result of extreme mutations in her throat and vocal cords, calling nearby zombies.

● Debuff: Screecher can also debuff survivors with her screech, so be careful not to get caught in its range. Her screech debuff can obscure a survivor’s vision or slow down their movement, significantly impacting their survival chances.

[h3]- Design Intentions[/h3]

● Challenging Disruptor: Screecher can be a very powerful disruptor in certain situations. Her screech can call nearby zombies, becoming a major threat to players. If not dealt with appropriately, the circumstances can quickly turn against the player. We designed Screecher to require quick and precise responses from survivors.

● Encouraging Detours or Route Changes: The presence of Screecher is intended to make survivors consider detours or alternative routes instead of facing her head-on. We wanted Screecher to stimulate strategic thinking by offering the choice to avoid or bypass the area she occupies.

● Less Threatening Physical: Screecher is a zombie that can be neutralized with proper handling. If a survivor understands her patterns and responds accordingly, she can be subdued relatively easily compared to other zombies. This design choice underscores that Screecher is a conditional threat, not a mandatory one.

Our development team doesn’t view zombies merely as in-game farming elements or monsters. In a zombie world, it’s crucial to minimize noise when dealing with zombies to avoid attracting more, or better yet, to avoid them altogether. We believe that zombies should be truly zombie-like, and humans should be able to deal with them efficiently to survive. Screecher was designed with this concept in mind, encouraging survivors to make careful, situation-based decisions.

Technical Test Results Report

Hello, Survivors!

The recent technical test has successfully concluded with your enthusiastic participation.
First and foremost, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who participated in the test.
Thanks to your valuable feedback and data, we had an important opportunity to further enhance the quality of the game.
Below is an overview and analysis of the collected data.

[h2][Created Accounts and Characters][/h2]

As a result of the test, a total of 878 accounts were created, and through these, 1,440 characters were generated.
In particular, the distribution of characters by class is as follows:

[h3]● Assaulter: 523 (36%)[/h3]
[h3]● Crow: 443 (31%)[/h3]
[h3]● Trapper: 474 (33%)[/h3]

This character distribution shows how survivors perceive the characteristics and strategic roles of each class within the game.
The fact that the Assaulter class was the most selected suggests that its aggressive playstyle and combat abilities were particularly appealing to many survivors.
On the other hand, Crow and Trapper seem to have formed a dedicated fan base due to their unique tactical versatility and utility.

From this data, our dev team has gained valuable insights into the appeal and balance of each class.
Based on this, we will analyze the reasons behind the varying levels of class popularity and make balance adjustments as necessary to create a more balanced gaming environment.

[h2][Highest Levels and Top Survivors][/h2]

During this test, two players achieved the highest level of 20, and the top survivors are as follows:

[h3]● Cosmic (Assaulter): 192,894 XP[/h3]

These players demonstrated exceptional skill and consistent gameplay, reaching the highest level and leaving a significant mark within the game.

Additionally, during the test,
268 items were put up for sale, and
a total of 1,726 items were successfully sold in the marketplace.
This level of active trading has been invaluable in assessing the functioning and balance of the economic system.

Through this test, we have gained several important insights.
Using these insights, we will conduct an in-depth analysis of class balance, economic system stability, and how survivors interact within the game.
We will continue to refine the game and establish a direction for improvement, striving to provide an even better gaming experience.

In future tests and the official service, we will reflect the outcomes of this test to ensure a more polished game.

Technical Test Announcement

We want to express our deepest gratitude for the incredible support and enthusiasm you’ve shown since the beginning of this year. Thanks to your encouragement, we’ve been able to focus on development over the past few months, and we are excited to announce that the technical test for TheMidnightWalkers will begin on Wed, 21 Aug, 2024, at 23:00(PDT).



The primary purpose of this technical test is to evaluate the stability of our significantly revised server structure, conduct stress tests on various development aspects, and monitor the overall gameplay experience. Please note that since the development is still ongoing, there may be occasional errors or server frame drops during the test.

- Experience new combat with zombies featuring revamped animations and combat patterns.

- Engage in user-to-user trading through TheMidnightWalkers' unique prototype exchange.

[h3][Escape Pod Tracker][/h3]
- Use the escape pod tracker by pressing the Z key to search your surroundings and locate escape pods.
Interact with the display next to the valve of an active escape pod to extract the escape code.
Escape pods with extracted codes will become deactivated.
You can reactivate deactivated escape pods by interacting with the pod site using the stored escape code.

- Items placed in the container inventory will be safely transferred out of the game even if the escape fails.
