Devlog 4: Slow Growing
Slow Growth
Back in June I got burned out from overwork and trying to chase too many deadlines. I took a holiday, pitched Palm Paradise Garden to a bunch of publishers at a conference (unsuccessfully), then on returning home, first injured myself while running, and followed that up by catching covid.
I've now recovered but all told, I have not progressed further with Palm Paradise Garden development since the last devlog. I have however spent a lot of time thinking about the game and getting feedback from various different people on it.
Beautifying
I am even more convinced that the game has great potential, and that the planned improvements mentioned in my last devlog - to the UI/UX, progression system, characters, and the addition of two further modes (relaxed and story) - are all essential and will vastly improve the game.
However, I've also realised the game is not quite hitting the cosy vibe, especially in terms of the visuals. So I will prioritise making the game really convey that feeling of stepping inside a tropical greenhouse - the warmth in the air and the vibrant lush plant life all around - before focusing on the gameplay.
My long term goal is still to make a demo, though given the amount of work, it could be a few months before this arrives.
What's Next
I should be able to really get down to working again on Palm Paradise Garden in the next few weeks. Once I get rolling, I'll aim to do more regular devlog updates.
Also, even though the demo has been delayed, Palm Paradise Garden is taking part in the Wholesome Games Steam Celebration this week! Definitely be sure to check out the other games in the festival, which includes a number of other nice gardening games as well as lots of general wholesome gaming goodness:

As always, if you have any questions or thoughts, please do say in the comments below!
