Revamped and improved Payday rival Crime Boss Rockay City is just $2 right now

If even Payday 3 struggled against the co-op heist might of Payday 2, Crime Boss: Rockay City had a Sisyphean task ahead of it. Originally launching in 2023 before coming to Steam a year later, it was marred by bugs, balance problems, and a perceived lack of content from the playerbase. Since then, however, Crime Boss: Rockay City has been steadily improving, and while it still might not be for everyone, it's enjoying quite the resurgence right now. If you want to try it, you can currently nab the game at an incredibly steep discount and dive in with returning players.

Crime Boss: Rockay City Two-Year Anniversary Dev Blog

2nd Anniversary Dev Blog
2 Years of Crime Boss: Rockay City

Since its launch on Epic Games in March 2023, Crime Boss: Rockay City has seen significant transformations through numerous updates and patches over the past two years. This blog takes you through every major change, from gameplay improvements and exciting new content to essential bug fixes and balance adjustments. For anyone curious about the effort that’s gone into shaping Crime Boss into the game it is today, we’ve gathered all the key updates that have defined its evolution.

Major Updates Timeline (2023–2025)
2023 Updates
Version 1.0
Mar 28, 2023 – PC Launch (Epic Games Store)
Crime Boss: Rockay City launched as a first-person co-op heist shooter, featuring a star-studded cast, a turf-war campaign, and multiplayer β€œCrime Time” mode.
Apr 3, 2023 – First Patch
This patch addressed loading issues, laggy EULA screens, and a bug causing a SWAT spawn issue. A previously unlisted bug involving a certain celebrity character appearing without clothing was also fixed.
Apr 17, 2023 – Performance & UI Fixes Patch
This update resolved FPS spikes in β€œDragon Dogs,” refined lobby filters, and introduced new features: high-ping warnings, an in-game ping display, quick links to Discord/website, and session naming for lobbies.
May 9, 2023 – Major Performance & Balance Patch
This update introduced IOSTORE technology for faster loading, requiring a full re-download. Game balance was improved with mission tweaks, new boss arenas, and adjusted progression for earlier access to weapons, black-market items, and crew hiring. Several bugs were fixed, including an invincibility glitch and FPS drops in lobbies.

Console launch
June 15, 2023 – PS5 & Xbox Series X/S Release (Day-1 Patch)
Crime Boss: Rockay City launched on consoles with a day-one patch focused on improving stability and online play. Following this update, overall game stability was improved on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Update 2
Aug 25, 2023 – Update 2
The update brought several key improvements. A new Respect stat in Crime Time allows players to gain Respect, which affects mission availability, enemy heat, rewards, and crew ranks. High Respect unlocks large heists like the Money Train, without relying on single-player progression.

Players can now pick up enemy weapons (with reduced damage). Controller aim assist was improved with a slower reticle near targets, slight tracking, and bullet magnetism. The difficulty of Baker’s Battle was reduced, and loot bag counts now scale with difficulty and player count.

Other Changes:

Crew progression: Teammates level up and unlock perks.
Non-lethal stealth takedowns: First hit knocks out enemies; second hit is lethal.
New mission Garage environment and unique character ranks.
Turf war enemy waves now spawn from one side for better mission variety.
Improved grenade cues for better awareness during combat.
Update 3

Aug 29, 2023 – Update 3

Update 3 added a fresh set of mission scenarios and environments to both the campaign and Crime Time, enhancing variety and replayability. Key improvements included stronger stealth mechanics, improved AI perception, and the introduction of a new β€œShuffle” mode with randomized mission chains. Turf War was also updated to include solo defense missions, and progression was balanced to make the campaign economy smoother while making certain missions more forgiving.

Key Changes:

Stealth Improvements: Stronger takedowns, rebalanced AI perception, and adjusted suppressor effectiveness.
New β€œShuffle” Mode: Players face randomized mission chains across three difficulty tiers, rewarding high rewards and extra Respect.
Turf War Update: Defense missions can now be attempted solo, allowing players to defend without hiring additional soldiers.
Balance & Progression Updates: Campaign economy smoothed, first Urban Legend (β€œNew Blood”) made more forgiving, and character-specific missions now persist across campaign runs even if the character dies.
Multiplayer & UI Enhancements: Hosts can now kick, mute, or view player profiles, and new privacy settings were added to the lobby.

Update 4 and Gold Cup Expansion
Sep 14, 2023 – β€œDragon’s Gold Cup” Expansion Pack (Paid DLC)
The first paid expansion, Dragon’s Gold Cup, introduces a new storyline and heist. Travis Baker teams up with Dollar Dragon to steal a former crime boss’s gold. The Gold Cup Heist is playable in three ways, with unique recon setups, and a single-player plotline unlocks Dollar Dragon as a recruitable crew member. New mission chains, including two Urban Legends, are added, along with an exclusive β€œBlue Dragon” outfit for Dollar Dragon.
Sep 14, 2023 – Update 4
Launched alongside the DLC, this update made several gameplay and UI improvements:

Improved Aim Assist: Refined for better control.
Buy-Back System: Lost weapons in Crime Time now return in the black market.
Stealth Upgrades: Ability to intimidate enemies into surrendering and sneak through missions undetected.

Boss XP Not Awarding Correctly: Addressed issue.

Restarting Baker’s Battle can now help properly update progress.

New missions like β€œBreaking Enemy Deals” took place in unique environments. Stealth mechanics were revamped, and the team/character UI received an overhaul. Crew perks were updated to remove negative traits, and AI behavior was improved to make stealth play more challenging. This update also added support for the Dragon’s Gold Cup DLC and resolved several bugs.

New Missions and Environments:

Breaking Enemy Deals: Sneak into rival gang territories to steal loot, set in a roadside diner and a beach underpass.
Shopping Arcade Robbery: A new two-floor mall map added variety to heist missions.

2024 Updates
Update 7

Feb 7, 2024 – Update 7

Update 7 brought major gameplay changes, including improvements to stealth mechanics, combat, and the single-player campaign experience. Key additions included enhanced stealth takedowns, an updated equipment system with cooldowns, reworked movement mechanics, and a revamped single-player campaign with a guided tutorial and new HEAT/Investigation systems. Additionally, the Butcher mini-boss became more challenging, and the Camera Jammer gadget was added to aid stealth.

Stealth Takedowns: Improved with new animations and smoother mechanics for silent eliminations.
Butcher Mini-Boss: Became more challenging. His weak spot (a fuel canister on his back) is easier to hit, but players can no longer exploit high ground to avoid his attacks.

Camera Jammer: A new rare gadget added to disable cameras silently.
Movement Refinements: Better mantling (climbing) and new vault animations.
Single-Player Campaign Overhaul:

The intro/tutorial was completely revamped with a new opening cutscene and a guided first mission.
The first day now serves as a structured tutorial, covering capturing turf, hiring an army, conducting heists, and ending the day.
The starting turf is fixed, and key characters (e.g., Ranger, Jupiter, Cracker) only appear later when the player has higher Respect.
A new cutscene introduces the Sheriff, explaining the HEAT and Investigation mechanics, which increase police presence based on player actions.
After the guided first day, the campaign transitions into the regular rogue-lite structure.
A button in the Options menu now resets all tutorial hints.
HEAT System Recalibration: Each mission raises HEAT, escalating police difficulty. The Investigation mechanic scales with the player’s actions, making high-crime sprees riskier.
Feb 15, 2024 – Update 7.2
Fixed an issue where players’ Respect level could wrap around from the highest tier to the lowest due to an overflow in experience points. This bug would reset the player’s max Respect.
Mar 14, 2024 – Update 7.9
A smaller update with balance tweaks and preparations for larger changes in Update 8.
Armored Truck Missions: Rebalanced to yield higher rewards.
Weapon and Economy Adjustments: Reworked weapon costs and progression aspects.
Bug Fixes: Resolved a glitch causing players to lose character control after using C4. Reduced the cost of hiring an army or starting Turf War battles with tier-3 soldiers.

The rogue-lite campaign was shortened and streamlined for quicker runs.

Police investigations ramped up faster, shortening playthrough lengths.
Character Progression: Players now level up characters like Travis Baker during the campaign, unlocking higher-tier perks for both Baker and crew members.

Bugs, Problems & Tech
QUESTION: Will there be an upcoming hotfix to address issues like the Ranger mission door bug?

ANSWER: The just released 14.1 patch has fixed this problem. Thank you for your patience.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

NOTE: If you want to see the full list of fixes in the 14.1 patch you can see them HERE.

QUESTION: Is there an option to switch off crossplay?

ANSWER: Yes, in the options menu under β€˜Game’ settings. Scroll to the bottom to enable or disable crossplay. While we encourage using this feature for a broader player base in co-op mode, you can disable it if you prefer.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

QUESTION: Is it just me, or is the ping really high for this game?

ANSWER: Since multiplayer is peer-to-peer, ping quality depends on the host’s internet upload speed. Many home connections have solid downloads but insufficient uploads, leading to higher ping. To improve your experience:

Use the session browser to find a server with better ping.
Host the game yourself.
We continue working on reducing network traffic with each update, though it’s a long process.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

QUESTION: I played through the new Rumble map. Has anyone else had issues with randomly not being able to ADS or shoot?

ANSWER: This issue is not common. If you’re experiencing it, please ensure you’re not using third-party software like aimbots or autoclickers, as we’ve seen such software cause problems before.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

QUESTION: My friend experiences a freezing bug after loading into a map. Any fix for this?

ANSWER: This is likely network-related and should be reported to customer support. To help diagnose the issue, please provide:

Whether this happens consistently. If the issue occurs when your friend hosts instead. The player’s ping and other network details. Whether verifying game data has been attempted.
You can submit a ticket for customer support HERE.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

QUESTION: Any chance of getting XeSS 2 support soon? The SDK was just released, and the game has an Intel Arc logo at startup.

ANSWER: We are reviewing it but haven’t made a final decision yet.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

QUESTION: Is cross-progression coming to the game? I’d love to continue playing on PC after hitting platinum on PS5.

ANSWER: Cross-progression is not planned.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

QUESTION: Are there any PS5 Pro enhancements?

ANSWER: We can make some small adjustments to optimize settings for the Pro console, but this is not a major priority right now.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

QUESTION: This update is great, but there’s still no public Lobby chat.

ANSWER: We initially removed Lobby voice chat due to technical issues with the on/off setting. We plan to resume work on this feature.

SP Campaign
QUESTION: Any plans for modifications to the map? Such as more enemy spawns, less ammo, or higher enemy health? What about a new difficulty setting?

ANSWER: We launched with one difficulty level and later added more. While additional difficulties are easier to implement, mission-specific modifiers are more complex. We are considering this, as such additions would significantly improve replayability.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

QUESTION: Any chance of New Game+ for the campaign? Where players can keep money and unlocks, but the game gets harder?

ANSWER: Not a top priority, but we are exploring customizable difficulty options that allow players to make the game easier or harder, including restrictions on boss cards and other settings. This is in the design phase with no ETA yet.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

QUESTION: Would you consider bringing back Wiz’s secret mission chain to the roguelike campaign?

ANSWER: No promises, but the full Wiz story is still present in the Standalone plotline of Hidden Vault.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

QUESTION: Any plans for new factions or expanding Rockay City, like introducing Yakuzas or adding a countryside location?

ANSWER: We would love to add new enemy bosses (Italians, Yakuza, Triads, Cubans, Colombians), but for now, the priority is expanding levels and adding new enemy archetypes (e.g., Butcher, Minigunner, Special SWAT). Something new is coming in Update 15.

UI/UX & Progression
QUESTION: Will we get a chat wheel 2.0 with more lines? I’d love to apologize when I mess up stealth.

ANSWER: We are analyzing its usage and open to suggestions on what to add. Let’s discuss this before development.

You can tell us your ideas in the suggestion channels on the official Discord!

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

QUESTION: Will the progression system be expanded so we always have something to work toward?

ANSWER: We learned a lot from our current progression system, introduced in Update 8. While we don’t plan a major overhaul, we are working on small improvements and new content like boss cards and single-player assets.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

QUESTION: Could Boss skins locked behind Campaign wins also be earned in Multiplayer? I gave up on the campaign because I can never win thanks to the cyborgs.

ANSWER: We are exploring ways to make this possible. Meanwhile, you can try eliminating Cagnali sooner or limiting police investigation to improve campaign difficulty.

Characters, Weapons & Perks
QUESTION: Will you tweak the dialogue? The characters sound flat.

ANSWER: Unfortunately, no. Existing dialogue recordings are final. Each character has over 2,500 lines, making re-recording impractical. However, we continue adding new VO for mission planners, guards, and SWAT lines.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

QUESTION: Any updates on Nasara and Casey’s voice lines?

ANSWER: Yes, we should address this, but it’s lower on the priority list.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

QUESTION: Will NPC-exclusive weapons like the Minigun ever be unlockable?

ANSWER]: Unlikely for now, but variations of existing guns are more likely to be added.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

QUESTION: Could we get more free Boss skins like Teresa and Vamp?

ANSWER: We can’t confirm anything but check the public ROADMAPβ€”there may be hints!

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

QUESTION: Could players carry more than four bags?

ANSWER: Four is the max with the mule booster equipment and the Mule Booster perk in the β€˜Jupiter Character Pack’ DLC.

Other areas

QUESTION: I wanted to ask if there are plans to add more diverse game modes like Rockay Rumble, which changes the main gameplay.

ANSWER: There are no plans for additional game modes in the near future. The focus is on improving existing content, especially multiplayer. However, some improvements and modifications may feel like new modes… We can’t say much more than that for now.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

QUESTION: What about the Nasara Revenge DLC? Is it still planned? Maybe next year?

ANSWER: This DLC is not planned, as it was designed as a series of small linear missions in a detective/thriller style. IGS is focused on creating larger missions that can be played in both MP and SP. In Update 15, new missions will appear as both standalone MP missions and a new Urban Legend. These will also be added as plotlines in the SP campaign, along with the addition of Cold Strike. The concept of Nasara Revenge doesn’t fit into this approach.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

QUESTION: Can we get an update to pick up bodies rather than placing them in suitcase-sized body bags? It would make the game much more immersive and higher quality!

ANSWER: Realistic corpse handling would be nice, but we don’t have it. Adding it is not a priority now. We have a long list of perks, abilities, equipment, and other gameplay improvements that seem more important.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

QUESTION: Do AI companions not use their skills?

ANSWER: No, AI bots do not actively use their equipment. We experimented with this, but it caused more problems than it solved. In Crime Boss, AI bots only shoot, revive, and transport lootβ€”which is already more than what is standard in the heisting genre. QUESTION: In the Gold Cup heist, can all the trucks arrive?

ANSWER: If you are referring to the stealth version of Gold Cup, the truck arrival mechanics have already been changed. However, for loud gameplay, this is not the case.

QUESTION: Three requests: customizable weapon skins in the campaign, bring back the Italians, and let us play as Chuck in a police campaign flipping the script!

ANSWER: Unfortunately, there isn’t much good news regarding these requests:

Italians won’t return unless we decide to introduce additional gangs, which is unlikely for now.
Weapon skin customization is not planned for single-player.
As for playing as Chuck Norris, that would be a cool idea! A Crime Boss: Ready or Not style game could be fun, but for now, we’re focusing on heisting. Maybe we should pitch it to 505 Games!

QUESTION: Any plans for armor? You die so easily! Also, any future outfit changes for characters, including henchmen?

ANSWER: If you have game balance suggestions, we recommend joining the official Crime Boss Discord and discussing them with other players and developers. We have dedicated sections for suggestions, and we actively incorporate ideas into the game. Any help is appreciated!
