DevLog 8 - Clearing The Floor
Hello again, Washers! 👋
[p][/p][p][/p][p]We’re back with another DevLog, this time we’re talking to 3D Artist, Rory, about another new addition to the PowerWash Sim 2 equipment, the SwirlForce floor cleaner![/p][p][/p][p]This long requested cleaner is a very satisfying way to relax and bust the grime. If you haven’t seen it in action yet, take a look here ⬇️[/p][p][/p][p][dynamiclink][/dynamiclink][/p][p][/p]

[p]Rory starts off; “The SwirlForce was one of the first jobs I was assigned coming into Futurlab and PowerWash Simulator 2 at the start of the year. I hadn't had much experience doing this equipment before, so it was a nice challenge to try to get right (and match the visual identity of the other powerwashers!) No pressure![/p][p] [/p][p]As with all things 3D, on my end you start with some reference gathering and those early block out shapes to send over to test some dimensions and how it would feel in the players hands. Moving what in real-life would be a two-handed tool into one hand required some tinkering in the shapes, so we played a lot with the proportions of this particular floor-cleaner, so it didn't look either too small or too cumbersome.”[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]“The way the shaft works is that (like the other washers) it has a series of extensions, but on top of that it has a telescopic shaft that extends out in increments so that the player can clean those hard to reach places. This required a little balancing, as initially I made it way too long, and it felt like you were holding some strange Sci-Fi implement (future DLC idea?)!”[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]Rory continues; “After a bit of back and forth on the shape and starting to finalize the block out some consideration was put into how the thing looked outside of those base shapes for testing. For this we actually had some concept art, which gave us a really great idea of how the Surface Cleaner would look from a side profile.[/p][p][/p][p]It unfortunately didn't account for our head-sizes, though and instead of having a dinky head to the powerwasher, we needed it to be quite large because floor cleaners in real-life are quite large; I mean, you're supposed to hold them with two hands!”[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]“So, getting creative and taking the concept as a base bit of reference, I started experimenting and getting a little bit stylized with the curves - making them more exaggerated here and there, and making parts of the main body perhaps a little bit larger than their real-life counterpart.[/p][p] [/p][p]By the end of all that exploratory modelling, doodles, meetings and cubes we had something that looked like a real powertool, whilst still feeling like it could exist in the same world as the other powerwashers. Particularly the hard-yellow stood out in contrast to nearly EVERYTHING you ended up washing.”[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]“But just when you think you've finished, you have to have some little considerations into how the visual matches up with the gameplay. The aforementioned telescopic shaft had gone through some revisions before we settled on the exact length, but we wanted to add in a visual cue outside of the UI that marked when you were near the full-extent of the shaft to save you from continuously pulling up.[/p][p] [/p][p]Sometimes the most simple solution works the best, and after a few trial and error decisions, it was settled that we'd have that shaft turn from metal grey to a very strong red (as well as the words MAX in case you didn't get the memo the first time)!”[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]“After all that was said and done, we finally had the art for our Surface Cleaner, our SwirlForce. I think with key items like this a lot of thought goes into every single facet that might not necessarily be felt by the player immediately, but each of these little decisions, fine-tuning measurements, thickness, shapes, nozzle-sizes and all that really come to create a complete product.[/p][p] [/p][p]I was pretty over the moon seeing the reaction to it when the gameplay trailer went live; I know it's silly as it's a new feature to PowerWash Simulator 2 so of course people would hyperfocus on it, but I had gotten myself worked up that it would be lost between all the new and exciting environments, other equipment and cats on screen!”[/p][p][/p][p]We can’t wait for you to get your hands on the new SwirlForce, not only is it a super relaxing way to clean but it’s a fun new tool for those of you who like to create art while you clean![/p]

[p]Did you see something in the gameplay trailer you’d like us to take a deeper look into, or something you’d like the team to talk about? Drop your ideas down in the comments for us![/p][p][/p][p]If you’re looking for some more looks behind the curtain of PowerWash Simulator and FuturLab, UI Artist Alex recently talked UI/UX design in a FuturLab blog! ⬇️[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]

DevLog 7 - Washer Goes Up, Washer Goes Down
Hello again, Washers! 👋
[p][/p][p]We’re back with a new DevLog, and today we’re looking at a recently revealed feature, Abseiling! [/p][p]If you haven’t seen our latest gameplay trailer yet, you can check it out here ⬇️[/p][p] [/p][previewyoutube][/previewyoutube][p][/p]

[p]This time we have PowerWash Simulator 2 Programmer, Jordan telling us a little about his role in the design of the abseiling feature.[/p][p] [/p][p]Jordan starts by saying; “Abseiling was the first big mechanic I got to work on when I moved from PowerWash Simulator to PowerWash Simulator 2. It was very daunting to be given one of the big new features to implement, but it was mostly exciting![/p][p]Abseiling might seem simple at first, but there are lots of things to consider when working on something like this. Maths, tooling for design and game feel are the most important. I’ll try to cover some of these in a way that makes it sound interesting.” It is interesting, Jordan![/p][p]
[/p][p]“The maths that was involved was largely translating the movement of the player from the XZ plane to XY. This means taking the player’s movement from the horizontal (forward, back, left and right) relative to the world, to the vertical plane (up, down, left and right) relative to the abseiling surface.[/p][p][/p][p]In addition to this, we also need to keep track of the player’s position on the wall so that we can have them dismount at the top and the bottom correctly.”[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]Jordan continues; “We also need to project the position of the player onto the crossbar that the rope attaches to. We have to calculate the end points of the crossbar and project the position onto that, including a small “look ahead vector” that makes it look as though the player is being pulled by the motor.”[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]“A large part of development that largely goes under the radar is custom tooling. We needed to make sure that the abseiling setup was as seamless as possible for our designers, so that they can just drag the abseiling equipment into a level, define a few parameters and have it just work.”[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]“I made a set up tool for this, which allows the designers to define things like; equipment width, rope length, distance from the wall. These are all controlled by sliders, with the addition of a few buttons to allow us to automate certain parts in levels that need less fine-tuning.[/p][p]These are by no means the only things, but I don’t want to give too much away. I went back and forth with our designers to make sure that this was as simple as it could be.”[/p][p] [/p][p]We can’t wait for you to all have fun with the abseiling equipment! We’re really proud of how well this has turned out, as well as the scissor lift, which we also had a look at in the gameplay trailer![/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]These both bring fresh ways to clean the filth at height, letting you make smaller adjustments to the level you’re hosing down and have some fun while you’re at it.[/p][p][/p]

[p]Did you see something in the gameplay trailer you’d like us to take a deeper look into, or something you’d like the team to talk about? Drop your ideas down in the comments for us![/p][p]

DevLog 5 - Dishing The Dirt
Hello Washers 👋
We’re back with another PowerWash Simulator 2 DevLog!

With PowerWash Simulator’s final content released for all to enjoy, we’re going to have a little catch up on what we’ve been looking at in previous DevLogs and taking a look at things that have been shown in our weekly dev streams over on the FuturLab Twitch channel ➡️ https://www.twitch.tv/FuturLab

Let’s start at the beginning, with
THE LORE!
After speaking to Mark, Writer at FuturLab, he filled us in on what's been going on since the end of PowerWash Simulator. It's been 5 years, and after saving the world, we continued cleaning up Muckingham (apparently stopping a volcano destroying the world doesn’t pay the bills...).

PowerWash Simulator 2 brings us somewhere new to work from. The back of the van was nice, but now we have a spacious home base: somewhere you’ll have the chance to decorate, gather friends or just relax between jobs. It also comes with this kick ass (currently work-in-progress) map, created by Senior UI Artist, Paul!

It will also feature a pin board to keep track of your journey!

Not actual image, but not far off...

After selling all of our upgraded equipment to raise the funds to purchase our home base, we’re back to our basic washer, but that won’t stop us doing our very best to keep everything clean and tidy!

Next up is one of the first levels in PowerWash Simulator 2, the Removals Van! Covered in gross, lumpy mud for you to clean off, the grime coming up in our sequel has more depth to it, more layers and looks wetter than ever.

We spoke to 3D Artist, Rachel, about her work on this level:

“There's not many jobs where you have to think "Would a bird poop here?" or "This looks disgusting. Perfect." Seriously. I think about dirt so much now. I found myself looking at a grimy bin in the park last week thinking "ah yes, I could make that worse..."”

Also debuting in PowerWash Simulator 2 is the Washer's snazzy new drip. Not too different from the suit you know and love, but a nice little upgrade for the Dirt Finder General!

Senior Character Artist, Matt, talked us through some of his processes in creating a friendly, welcoming look to The Washer:

"This is the final concept, where I added a smartphone in a waterproof case, replacing the tablet worn at the belt of the original character and redesigned the washer backpack. The new backpack design is less square and blocky than the original, uses a simpler colour palette, and is made of more premium-feeling materials. This all serves to make it feel like an upgrade."

Our next deeper dive was the Teapot Tea Room with Senior 3D Artist, Dennis!

He said during this DevLog, “PowerWash is all about the satisfaction of revealing this happy, pristine clean surface hiding underneath all kinds of thick, gross dirt. The contrast between the two states is very important for the art team, as the better the contrast, the more satisfying the reveal is!

We generally choose happy, saturated colours for our washables when they're clean. Red & green is a great combo, so this is what we went with for the tea room. We also generally choose brighter shades of colours. This all contrasts really well with the darker, desaturated grime & dirt that's placed on top."

We’ve been taking a look at the Removals Van and Teapot Tea Room in our livestreams, too!
Our Community Manager, Jonny (hello!), has been showing off some of the "waterier" water effects, the thicker dirt and how different washers work on different dirt types.

The White 40-degree nozzle is great for surface level dirt and for taking a look at what's hidden underneath, but could leave a layer of dirt below that you'll need to tackle with a stronger nozzle to clear up properly.

We also have some new equipment for you to use in PowerWash Simulator 2! While we haven’t yet fully gone into the equipment you’ll have to hand, we'll have 8 washers for you to use. Here are the washers we’ve shown off so far! ⬇️
Prime Vista Light

Prime Vista Medium

Prime Vista Heavy
And one we recently revealed in our FuturLab newsletter. The new Urban X Light

That's it for this time, folks!

We'll be continuing our regular dev streams over on Twitch every Friday, taking a look at more PowerWash Simulator 2 features, and we'll be back with a new DevLog soon!
