The new MMO from the Elder Scrolls Online developers would reportedly have been a sci-fi noir affair in which players swing around tall buildings on grappling lines, and do aerial dashes while shooting and looting. Call it Blade Runner Spider-Man. Call it Destiny 2077. Call it whatever you like, frankly, because it has been abandoned as part of wider layoffs at parent company Microsoft, the outfit that made tens of billions of dollars in profit this past financial quarter, yet has decided to jettison thousands of staff in the name of "discipline" and "continued success".

The big story of this week has been Microsoft's huge round of layoffs, which have impacted several teams and projects under the Xbox Game Studios banner. That includes Zenimax Online Studios, the developer behind the hugely successful The Elder Scrolls Online, which has seen an upcoming MMO scrapped. New details have now emerged about the project, codenamed Blackbird, which was reportedly a sci-fi noir third-person shooter with dynamic movement mechanics - and just a matter of months ago, a vertical slice allegedly wowed Microsoft's gaming chief Phil Spencer.

ESO dev's new MMORPG, in the works for over seven years, has been canceled

Microsoft is today laying off 9,000 employees, and a decent chunk of those workers are part of the Xbox side of the business. Developers under the Xbox Game Studios banner are being squeezed, and The Elder Scrolls Online creator Zenimax Online Studios is among them. Despite being busy supporting ESO for many years, the studio has been toiling away at another project, reportedly codenamed Blackbird. However, due to this new round of layoffs, Blackbird - thought to be another ambitious MMO - has been canceled.
