Devlog #1 - Items Galore

Greetings, Toadlers! đź’š

Game designer Josh here. I’d like to tell you about one of the biggest and most exciting changes we’ve introduced to Toadled: Eating Frenzy over the past year: items.

Items improve various parts of your game. You get to choose or upgrade one item halfway through each level, and then again when you beat the level. Items come in four categories:

Buddies 🦔


These helpful animal friends periodically wake up to launch an attack. Some, like Buzz the turtle, just do a lot of damage. Others give extra bonuses: for example, Toad gets healed whenever Leon the chameleon snags an enemy. (Like Toad’s biology in general, the symbiotic process in action here is not well understood.)



Tongues đź‘…


Tongues make something good happen whenever Toad eats an enemy. Water Tongue heals Toad and refills your slow-mo meter, which is great for defensive play. Stone Tongue petrifies enemies and enables them to take out others nearby. Don’t worry though, Toad still grows when he petrifies an enemy. I guess he sucks out all their delicious nutrients first.



Trinkets 🎀


...relate to what we call “pickups”, the useful objects like health packs that sometimes float across the top of the screen. Each trinket makes one type of pickup spawn more often, and it also adds some kind of bonus to that pickup. For instance, the Detonator spawns more boom blocks (which clear all enemies when eaten), and it also adds combo for each enemy cleared by boom blocks. Boom-bastic!



Badges 🛡️


You can wear them proudly while they provide a variety of passive bonuses. One is the Chef’s Badge, which increases your minimum combo and adds extra growth gain from having a high combo. This badge is perfect for players who like to aim precisely and max out their combo. If that’s not usually your thing, you can try it out anyway and see if you have fun with a new playstyle.



You get to choose one item in each category each game. Every item can be upgraded up to level 6. You can explore different combinations and upgrade orders to find out what works best for you. Maybe you’ll want to focus heavily on healing or combo, or maybe you’ll prefer to spread out your bonuses. The available items are randomized each run, so you can’t play the exact same way every time!

One of our big areas of focus has been to make the game more replayable, and items are a major part of that. We’re going to add more items for you to unlock by completing objectives over time. That will provide players with goals to accomplish through playing, as well as fun rewards for achieving those goals.
