Building the Core Systems Part 1: Resource Chains
Howdy, partners!
The frontier might look like endless open land, but underneath all that dust and pine is a complex, living system slowly turning our little settlement into a thriving community. In today’s devlog, we’re pulling back the curtain on one of the biggest pillars of Wild West Pioneers: resource chains - the unsung heroes behind every bite, brick, and barrel.
RESOURCE CHAINS: From Wilderness to Table
Out here, nothing comes easy. There’s no magic pantry or bottomless warehouse. Every single thing - whether it’s a sausage or a stack of lumber - has to be hunted, crafted, hauled, and delivered. And that’s where our resource chain system comes in.
Let’s look at food, for example.
To keep your settlers fed, here’s what needs to happen:
But here’s the twist: hunters and butchers need tools and supplies, too. Nothing exists in isolation. It’s all about location, efficiency, and flow.

If you want your settlement to grow strong, you’ll need to ask yourself:
These aren't just nice-to-know details - they’re the core logistical puzzles that shape your entire town. Every decision you make creates ripple effects.
Our goal with resource chains is to give you meaningful complexity. We want you to feel the reward of watching your systems click into place - from the ground up. When everything runs like clockwork, your settlers are happy, your town is humming, and the wild frontier starts to feel a bit more like home.
But it’s a delicate balance. One weak link - a distant warehouse, a tool shortage, or a dry well - can bring everything to a standstill. Solving those problems as your settlement grows is part of the fun. It’s what makes the world feel alive.
And that’s just food. Wood, water, tools, clothing, construction materials - each has its own web of dependencies. Managing them all? That’s the real challenge for a pioneer.
Until next time,

Let’s look at food, for example.
To keep your settlers fed, here’s what needs to happen:
- Hunt – Assign hunters near game-rich areas to gather raw meat.
- Process it at the Butcher – Meat comes in, tasty sausages come out.
- Store and transport – Warehouse workers move goods between buildings.
- Distribute through the Store – Only then can your settlers grab a bite.
But here’s the twist: hunters and butchers need tools and supplies, too. Nothing exists in isolation. It’s all about location, efficiency, and flow.

If you want your settlement to grow strong, you’ll need to ask yourself:
- Where are your raw materials coming from?
- What buildings are part of the chain?
- Are your warehouses and stores close enough to be effective?
- Do your workers have the gear they need to do their jobs?
These aren't just nice-to-know details - they’re the core logistical puzzles that shape your entire town. Every decision you make creates ripple effects.
