Official Lore – Asag, the Plague Ancient Demon of the Middle Ages
[p]This is the official lore and mythological foundation of Devil of the Plague, a co-op medieval horror game set during the Middle Ages and inspired by ancient Sumerian mythology.[/p][p]
Before time was divided into calendars; when the names of the ancients were spoken with fear and blood… There was a name in the ancient Sumerian pantheon that was only whispered: Asag.[/p][p]
He was not a king that had any dominion.[/p][p]Nor a guardian weighing humanity's fate with justice.[/p][p]Asag was the child of chaos. The laughter of destruction, the breath of disease, the crack within order itself.[/p][p]
Asag was an Ancient Demon; he held no throne of power but a corrupting whisper that spread. And when he was expelled, he unleashed upon the world, rotting cities, poisoning waters, and planting fear within the hearts of men.[/p][p]With his footsteps, the plague was born. With his breath, brother turned against brother.[/p][p]
Eventually, the time has come.[/p][p]The divine will that guarded order imprisoned Asag in Purgatory, a bottomless abyss belonging neither to existence nor oblivion.[/p][p]
There, time did not flow.[/p][p]Their screams did not echo.[/p][p]But Asag was not silenced.[/p][p]
For tens of thousands of years, he continued whispering from that dark void.[/p][p]His words seeped not into ears, but into minds.[/p][p]Into those driven by ambition. Into those who are defied death. Into those who mistook darkness for knowledge.[/p][p]When the medieval age arrived, and the world was shrouded in the fog of black magic[/p][p]Sorcerers who dug beneath the earth, opened graves, and sealed forbidden books with blood…[/p][p]they heard Asag's voice.[/p][p]“Immortality,” said Asag.[/p][p]“Power,” he promised.[/p][p]“Strength beyond mortal limits…”[/p][p]In return, he sought for only one thing: servants willing to act in his name.[/p][p]
Rituals were performed. Blood was spilled. The forbidden was invoked.[/p][p]And once more, stepped onto the world.[/p][p]
With him came chaos.[/p][p]Plagues. Wars. Kings driven mad.[/p][p]Those who summoned him were rewarded becoming commanders in Asag's armies, drifting far from humanity.[/p][p]
But every time Asag was called forth, we were there.[/p][p]
We are an order that has existed for fifteen thousand years.[/p][p]Founded by the will of the Great God, erased from history, our traces reduced to legend.[/p][p]Chosen from among men, entrusted with what others are not.[/p][p]
Each of us carries a spark weak alone, unstoppable together.[/p][p]
We have defeated Asag many times.[/p][p]Each time, we forced him back into Purgatory.[/p][p]And yet we know: he never gives up.[/p][p]
We are in the era in which we will wage our greatest war against it, the "Middle Ages." It has reached all the important cities of the world; we will destroy it in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages... Today or tomorrow...[/p][p]in the Medieval castles. In Egypt. In the shadows of Istanbul. In the great Asian palaces. On a pirate ship in the middle of the ocean...[/p][p]Asag may rise again, but this time we will silence him forever.[/p][p]
And when the call comes wherever it comes from with our blades, our knowledge, and our loyalty to one another, we must find him and destroy him.[/p][p]
Because the world cannot endure its laughter once more.[/p][p]
