Elite Dangerous Odyssey's console ports are on hold until the PC version is fixed

Elite Dangerous has been in tough shape since the launch of the Odyssey expansion, which opened up first-person on-foot exploration of planets and space stations to the massive open-world space game. The expansion has seen several massive patches since it came out, which have fixed a laundry list of issues and added new features like shared multiplayer missions. Now developer Frontier says it's putting development of the expansion's console edition on hold until the rest of its major issues are resolved.

Frontier CEO David Braben took to the Elite forums to announce the updated plans for Elite Dangerous' current roadmap. In the post, Braben acknowledges the frustration the player community has been experiencing with Odyssey and says that the studio remains focused on fixing the expansion so that it provides "the experience that you and we expect on PC."

"We have spent a lot of time discussing and re-evaluating our previous plans and we have made the decision to prioritise the core PC experience for Elite Dangerous," Braben writes. "Ultimately, we believe it is right to focus our efforts on the core Elite Dangerous Odyssey experience for the platforms that we have released on, before opening up to more."

Elite Dangerous Odyssey: Server Update

Greetings Commanders.

Today at approximately 14:30 UTC/ 15:30 BST we will be restarting the Odyssey servers to apply some server-side fixes. Downtime is not expected to be any longer than a few minutes.

This downtime will not affect Horizons servers.

  • Restoration missions will no longer be incompletable when putting out fires.
  • Missions to steal data from settlements will now display objectives on your HUD and the data will be available as intended.
  • Salvage missions now display objectives on your HUD and items can now be found at salvage sites.
  • Missions to take out settlement occupants will now register progress correctly.
  • Fixed an issue caused by older missions conflicting with the latest update (this would have resulted in missing HUD objectives and being unable to progress once reaching the mission location).
  • Fixed a crash caused by missions that would send you to non-settlement locations (this may take up to 12 hours to roll out).
  • Commodities that are temporarily illegal because of an active Faction State can now be sold to stations that need them for repairs.
  • Fixed an issue with Players rarely not being able to load into Horizons after playing Odyssey
  • Rebalanced the faction influence effects from repeatedly winning & losing various scenarios at Installations & Megaships
  • Adjusted Mercenary rank progression speed for Odyssey on foot players

Elite Dangerous: Odyssey's latest big patch adds shared missions

There's a new patch out today for Elite Dangerous: Odyssey, and the notes for it are so long they take up two full Steam posts. The 5.8 GB patch for the huge space game adds several new features and fixes some of the remaining issues introduced with the launch of the Odyssey expansion, which itself added first-person exploration and combat to Elite Dangerous.

Frontier Developments has flagged seven major areas of improvement for this latest update. The patch, officially called Odyssey Update 5, adds shared missions, updates the outfitting UI flow, rebalances neutron stars, updates the cockpit lighting in all ships, makes AI crime scanning behaviour "more lenient", increases the chance of finding rare materials at fumaroles, and improves the terrain fidelity for legacy settlements and planetary ports.

Each of these is broken out into more detail in the two patch posts. Shared missions are the big new feature, as every mission added in Odyssey can now be undertaken together with your teammates. You'll see a 'share' button on all Odyssey mission entries in the transaction panel if you're on a team, and if you decide to share, your teammates will have the option to accept or reject your invite.
