Elite Dangerous is getting another big patch for Odyssey

There's another patch inbound for Elite Dangerous, and developer Frontier says it includes a whole raft of fixes for the recently launched Odyssey expansion, as well as some updates for Horizon. The massive space game has had a rough couple of weeks since Odyssey came out, but a steady stream of patches and hotfixes is gradually righting the ship.

Frontier says the next patch, along with its changelog, will be turning up at 1 a.m. PDT / 4 a.m. EDT / 9 a.m. BST June 3, and that it "contains many fixes and improvements for Odyssey" that include optimisations, UI adjustments, "and much more". The first-person exploration DLC isn't the only thing it's changing, either - Frontier says that Horizons "will also receive some improvements."

Frontier pushed out a first hotfix for Odyssey the day after the expansion launched, and the first major patch arrived just a week later. That patch, Update 1, included a dizzying array of fixes, but Frontier said at the time that it would continue work on improvements to optimisation and the new planetary tech.

Elite Dangerous: Odyssey - Background Simulation Balancing

Greetings Commanders.

With the launch of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey, we have been monitoring the effects it has had in relation to the Background Simulation.

We have been collating Commander gameplay data throughout the last week. Using this data, we will be making changes today to balance out the effects Odyssey missions have on the Background Simulation This will bring them in line with existing mission effects in Horizons.

We are aware of a number of concerns raised from player communities around the impact Odyssey has had on the Background Simulation. We will continue to monitor this closely going forwards.

These changes will take effect as of 15:00 UTC / 16:00 BST today.

Fly safe, Commanders o7

Elite Dangerous: Odyssey review

Here she comes, limping into starport with her thrusters spluttering, smoke billowing from her exhaust, sparks leaping from the jump drive. No, I'm not describing my spaceship as part of the universal game review opening in which I tell a tiny story to ease you into things. I am using blunt metaphor to describe Elite Dangerous: Odyssey itself, the leggy new expandopack that adds first-person exploration and gunfire to Elite's space sim. Although she's a tough machine with lots of promise, her internal electronics have a serious case of gremlins. Look, she's exploded.

Elite Dangerous: Odyssey's first major update includes a huge list of fixes

Elite Dangerous: Odyssey's launch has been a bit of a rough ride. Frontier CEO David Braben has even gone so far as to take personal responsibility for the buggy state Odyssey arrived in, pledging to get issues fixed as quickly as possible. It seems he's as good as his word, as Frontier has released a significant update today that addresses an extensive list of bugs in the space game's new expansion.

The patch touches just about everything in the game, from audio mixing issues and lighting effects to UI and character animations. Odyssey has only been out for a week, and it seems Frontier has been hard at work in that time - perhaps implementing fixes that have been in the pipeline since before launch.

Frontier says it's aware the patch, large and far-reaching as it is, doesn't address all of the complaints players have had about Odyssey. "We would like to reassure you that we are aware of other concerns raised from our community, which aren't addressed in today's update," the studio says. "We continue to investigate your concerns around performance, UI, and Odyssey's planetary tech and will share information with you as soon as we have it."
