How Elite Dangerous players saved a pilot past the edge of the galaxy

"There's nothing out there. Not for a long way anyway. Ahead is nothing but blackness. As I transmit these words I believe I am the furthest any human has ever traveled from Sol."

Such was the perilous situation in which CMDR Persera found herself in December 2017 - adrift in the inky-black void beyond the edge of the Elite Dangerous galaxy, around 11 light years past the most distant star and around 65,650 light years from our Solar System. And it was all in an attempt to drop off some mugs.

"Far Out Mugs - Send your mug to the Beyond!" said the advert in the Hutton Orbital space station. "Send a personalised Hutton Mug out to the furthest reaches of human-explored space. This is an opportunity unlike any other... Pilot Wanted - Think you have what it takes to brave the beyond? Contact The Hutton Orbital Tourism Bureau."

How Elite: Dangerous players saved a pilot stuck past the edge of the galaxy

"There's nothing out there. Not for a long way anyway. Ahead is nothing but blackness. As I transmit these words I believe I am the furthest any human has ever traveled from Sol." CMDR Persera is currently drifting in the inky-black void beyond the edge of the Elite Dangerous galaxy, around 11 light years past the most distant star and around 65,650 light years from our Solar System.

The Hutton Mug is an infamous rare commodity in Elite Dangerous. Only available at Hutton Orbital, a space station that is known for orbiting at a huge distance (0.22 light years) from its parent star, the mugs are apparently "made from the salvaged frame shift drive plates of ships that ran out of fuel before reaching the station".

Elite Dangerous: Horizons becomes a free update for all players next month

Remember Elite Dangerous: Horizons? The space game's second season of expansions from a few years back, which added things like planetary landings, weapon crafting, ship-launched fighters, and "exhilarating multicrew co-op action" to Elite's universe? It's about to become a free, major update for all Elite Dangerous players on PC and consoles - and there's a treat in store for those who have already purchased it, too.

Frontier Developments announces "the rich season of content", Horizons, will drop as a hefty update into the Elite Dangerous: Horizons base game for the low, low cost of absolutely nothing on October 27 in a press release. That means players who haven't yet delved into Horizons will get to "put wheels on the ground and explore the galaxy up-close with the SRV Scarab ground vehicle" as well as check out "many surface star ports and other locations" from that date for free.

However, if you've purchased Horizons previously, you'll be able to grab an exclusive "Azure" paint job, which is compatible with all of the simulation game's 41 existing ships.

Elite Dangerous: Horizons brings planetary landings to the Elite Dangerous galaxy, together with weapon crafting, ship-launched fighters and exhilarating multicrew co-op action.
