Japanese Rainbow Six Siege team accused of match throwing in APAC North

23/10/2020 Ubisoft has stated that the throwing allegations are currently under investigation.

A Rainbow Six Siege esports team playing in the APAC North division has sparked a massive debate over the tournament's structure after appearing to intentionally lose a game in order to qualify for a major.

The second and final phase of APAC North Stage 2 concludes today, October 22, but Japanese team CYCLOPS athlete gaming found itself in an unusual position earlier due to the competition's complicated format. Essentially, if it were to win its fixture against Thai team QCon and Cloud9 were also to win, CYCLOPS would be out of contention to qualify as a top seed for next month's regional Six Major. However, if CYCLOPS were to lose, it would actually guarantee a top two spot in the APAC North standings and qualify as a top seed, meaning it would head straight to the semi-finals of that tournament. SiegeGG's Shikhar Gupta clarifies how this is actually possible here.

CYCLOPS went on to lose against QCon. The team's coach, Hibiki 'XQQ' Motoyama, then caused a stir in the pro community after quote tweeting a breakdown of the possible outcomes of the match with the caption: "For anyone who [was] wondering why we played like that."

Rainbow Six Siege and AC Odyssey rewards are "temporarily unavailable" - for a full week

Ubisoft Club, along with Uplay, is turning into Ubisoft Connect, and that's going to mean a handful of changes for some Ubisoft games as they transition to the new rewards scheme. Some games are moving their challenges to the new system, and while the transition is underway, you won't be able to access your Ubisoft rewards in three of the company's titles.

From October 21 until October 27, rewards will be unavailable in Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Rainbow Six Siege, and Steep. Once the maintenance period ends, For Honor, Ghost Recon Breakpoint, Hyper Scape, The Division 2, and Steep will all be in the new rewards programme with the new challenge system, while Odyssey and Siege will get those challenges "after a future update", Ubisoft says.

For now, Siege - along with Hyper Scape, Steep, and The Division 2 - is getting new limited-time challenges, separate from the broader core challenge set, and For Honor will follow with a future update. Older, unsupported games will lose their challenges, but will have all their rewards unlocked for free once the Ubisoft Connect transition is complete.

Rainbow Six Siege patch drops midway through APAC North League

October 21 Ubisoft has released a statement explaining yesterday's situation and has thanked teams for their understanding.

Rainbow Six Siege updates usually bring some pretty big changes to the game and yesterday was no different. However, while the majority of players dived straight into the patch notes, the professional scene in the APAC region was thrown into turmoil.

That's because the Y5S3.3 patch was dropped in the middle of the APAC North Stage 2, which was being streamed live on Twitch. As a result, organisers were forced to end the livestream early to allow the final two matches to be played on the old patch.

Although this decision was made to protect the competitive integrity of the league, many fans were left wondering why Ubisoft had decided to release the patch during such an important time for the competitive scene. GUTS Gaming, FAV Gaming, Scarz, and Electrify Esports did manage to complete their games off-stream, but the interruption has left a sour taste in the mouths of many players and fans - especially those who were looking forward to watching their team compete.

Rainbow Six Siege's Halloween map and TDM mode leaked

Earlier this year, some leaks pointing to what Rainbow Six Siege's 2020 Halloween event might hold popped up online. Footage indicated the FPS game's celebration of all things spooky would be called Sugar Fright and bring a Team Deathmatch-style game mode. Now, more leaks are starting to appear, which means our first proper peep at the event's map, gameplay, and rules.

User Zer0Bytes has posted some information on the upcoming event on the multiplayer game's subreddit, which includes footage showcasing Sugar Fright's map. As you can see in the clip linked here, it appears the event will bring what looks to be a new street map, filled with bakery or factory-type rooms, and decked out in suitably sweet-themed items, like piles of candy, cupcakes, and other treats.

YouTuber BenjaminStrike has also posted a clip of the event in-action, and it seems it is indeed a kind of 5v5 Team Deathmatch or Kill Confirmed-style mode, with the two sides named 'treaters' and 'tricksters'. When the round kicks off, the objective shown is "hunt the tricksters - collect 50 sweets from kills".
