Rainbow Six Siege's new ping system arrives with Operation Shadow Legacy

Rainbow Six Siege's Operation Shadow Legacy brings with it a host of new changes, including an entirely revamped ping system, which Ubisoft is calling Ping 2.0. The substantial changes are designed to give players greater control over pings and to allow for more depth of information to be conveyed through the simple communication system.

Traditionally, pings let players to place markers locations, giving teammates contextual cues to the location of enemies, gadgets, or anything else in the game. Under the old system, only one ping was available, but they will now be colour coded depending on what is the ping is attached to. They also have unique numbers, so other teammates can see who is doing the pinging, not just what has been pinged.

Perhaps the biggest improvement Ping 2.0 brings over the old system though is by adding gadget ping capabilities. Previously, pings could only be sent by operators themselves, but now can be sent from either cameras or drones.

Rainbow Six Siege's match replay will be tested in Operation Shadow Legacy

Rainbow Six Siege's Operation Shadow Legacy is getting a host of new features, including a much anticipated much replay feature to help you work on your game. It arrives alongside a personal stats page to allow you to analyse your performance from every angle possible.

And every angle means every angle. While the stats page is comprehensive enough on its own, the replay feature allows you to watch any of your last ten games from the angle of any of the players, or from the spectator camera. No stone need be left unturned in your quest for greatness as you scour through every moment again and again.

The replay editor, alongside the stats page, had previously been delayed as the pandemic impacted their development and release. A sizeable revamp to the game's pinging system was also delayed around the same time, and this too is now ready to be rolled out with the replay editor, although the replay system will be in alpha and only available on the test server alongside the new operation.

Rainbow Six Siege - Everything we know about Zero

Rainbow Six Siege's new operator Zero could become one of the game's most popular operators, but for some fans, his arrival will be a little bittersweet. People have long requested the opportunity to play as Zero, though this probably isn't quite what they imagined.

Zero is the code name of Sam Fisher, the hero of the Splinter Cell series. The last time we got a Splinter Cell game was back in 2013, and there has been a growing sense of frustration that the series is stagnating. Since then, Fisher has made a few similar spin off appearances, with his arrival in Rainbow Six Siege Operation Shadow Legacy a continuation of that.

On one hand, it proves that Ubisoft has not forgotten about Fisher, and by extension, has not forgotten about Splinter Cell. But on the other, it could be further indication that Ubi is trying to airlift Fisher out of his own franchise, using his popularity as a jumping off point without needing to put the work in to revive Splinter Cell as a whole.

Rainbow Six Siege match replay system hits test servers soon

Want to know when you'll have access to the Rainbow Six Siege match replay system? It's been a long wait for players who want to be able to properly analyse their Siege matches. A match replay system has been spoken about for years, officially confirmed at this year's Rainbow Six Siege Invitational (SI 2020), and officially delayed in May with the reveal of Operation Steel Wave.

At the time of the delay, the FPS game's director Leroy Athanassoff said this. "Just like everybody else, we had to adapt to this strange situation we are all in. In those past weeks we had to face a lot of human and technical challenges. Good news is, we overcame almost all of them, and we are going to deliver to you a new, kickass season."

In order to deliver on Steel Wave, Athanassoff revealed the studio needed to "make a tough decision" with regard to the planned feature. "We were extremely excited to bring to you the match replay and the new ping system that we showed you at SI," he explains, "but we had to postpone the release of these features to focus on securing our testing capacities for the season."

Rainbow Six Siege Shadow Legacy isn't R6 2.0, but it's a great start

When the first teaser dropped for Operation Shadow Legacy, revealing a grizzled but instantly recognisable Sam Fisher, nobody would have thought that the real highlights of the upcoming Operations would include better pings, being able to share reinforcements, and new optics.

Approaching its sixth birthday, Rainbow Six Siege has seen its fair share of mechanical updates over its lifetime, but many gripes have persisted. Colour blind players have struggled to use their own scopes due to a fixed optic colour, the game's basic ping system has meant communicating without a microphone is almost pointless, and a lack of scope variety has made weapon balancing a constant headache for Ubisoft. Players have never had a say in what maps they get to play on, Thatcher's EMP grenades have felt mightier with each new season, and selfish defenders have been able to leave their teammates in the lurch by running off without putting up vital reinforcements.

Rainbow Six Siege Operation Shadow Legacy addresses all of these growing pains. Taken in isolation, none of these fixes are going to drastically change the way that Rainbow Six Siege plays, but altogether they go a long way to easing the frustrations of a player base that's 60 million and counting. Sorry Splinter Cell fans, but it looks like Sam Fisher still isn't ready to be the star of the show.
