Rainbow Six Siege Memevitational is a "celebration of all things Siege"

10/02/2021 The names and logos of the ten competing teams have now been revealed.

Rainbow Six Siege fans were understandably devastated when Ubisoft postponed the Six Invitational last week, but players and content creators have come together to replace the competition. As one of the biggest esports games, any replacement to the biggest tournament on the Siege calendar will have to be something special for fans to be happy.

However, something special seems to be on the cards, as some of the finest Siege players are coming together to host the R6 Memevitational - a fun tournament that will see pros join teams with content creators to give fans of the esport something to look forward to.

Ex-G2 and Chaos Esports Club analyst Jack 'Fresh' Allen shared a screenshot of the early discussions of the tournament, in which some top UK talents brainstormed ideas. Commentator Derry 'Dezachu' Holt came up the the Memevitational name, but the process looks very collaborative. Fresh's tweet says that they now have, "near enough 10 confirmed teams, with some of the biggest and best names in Siege."

Rainbow Six Siege fans see Invitational delay, create a "Memevitational" instead

It always sucks to see your favourite events cancelled or delayed, especially when we're talking about huge annual esports tournaments like the Rainbow Six Siege Six Invitational 2021, which was recently postponed. However, the FPS game's community has rallied to make up for the contest's absence, and created a "Memevitational" instead.

'What is a Rainbow Six Siege Memevitational?' you may rightly ask. Well, as spotted by The Loadout, it's a collaborative tournament being organised - and featuring - "some of the biggest and best names in Siege", as former esports analyst Jack 'Fresh' Allen says on Twitter. "Pretty excited for this whole R6 Memevitational tournament," he says, explaining that "four days ago, it was just an idea conceptualised in a Discord group chat, and now we have near enough ten confirmed teams, with some of the biggest and best names in Siege."

As you can see in the screenshot of this early conceptualisation below, it looks like the process of putting this tournament together has been a collaborative process between some of the multiplayer game's popular talents, such as commentator Derry 'Dezachu' Holt, who appears to have coined the contest's name.

More than 90k Rainbow Six Siege players were banned in 2020

Ubisoft swung the ban hammer at more than 90,000 players last year in Rainbow Six Siege. The developer has been talking about anti-cheat in the FPS game and has shed some light on what's happened in 2020 and what's happening in the future.

Ubisoft explains that it exceeded its previous annual ban number record by 44.73% last year when it banned 91,112 players. This was aided by improved detection, detailed reporting, and data sharing with Battleye. However, the developer does admit that the increasing availability of cheats keeps it on its toes, so it's very much an ongoing fight. A new type of cheating sanction, based on player data, was also introduced in August of last year. It led to more than 4,500 players being banned between August and December, which led to a 52.69% increase in cheating bans when added to Ubisoft's cheating sanctions.

There's not a lot that Ubisoft can say about its plans from now on without making it easier for cheaters to anticipate what's coming. The developer still does offer some insight with its three essential topics for 2020: detection, blockers, and vulnerabilities.

Rainbow Six Siege's Six Invitational 2021 has been postponed

Ubisoft is postponing Rainbow Six Siege's Six Invitational esports event. In a post on its website, the developer explains that running the event in February proves challenging as France closed its borders to non-EU travellers last month. Ubisoft initially tried to find a solution so it could organise a physical edition of the Invitational in Paris, but it has since learned that "LAN esports events are no longer possible in today's context, despite the strict sanitary measures put in place".

"We have no choice but to postpone the Six Invitational 2021 to a later date," the developer writes on its website. "While we are obviously disappointed that the Six Invitational will no longer go ahead this month as planned, our focus is now on re-evaluating the situation and looking for alternative options; we know fans are looking forward to both the reveal by the developers of the upcoming changes in Rainbow Six Siege, as well as the competition itself."

Ubisoft explains that it's working with organisations to find the best possible solution and that you can expect details on the impact of this decision for rosters and Season 2021 "soon".

Ubisoft has postponed the 2021 Six Invitational

Just days before the biggest tournament on the Rainbow Six Siege calendar was set to begin, Ubisoft has revealed that it is postponing the 2021 Six Invitational.

Set to be held as an international LAN event in Paris, Ubisoft now says that due to a recent ruling from the French government that closed the country's borders to non-EU travellers, it can no longer host the event as planned. "We have now learned that LAN esports events are no longer possible in today's context, despite the strict sanitary measures put in place," Ubisoft's announcement says.

Over the last couple of days, there have been rumblings in the pro Siege community around whether the Six Invitational would take place. It's now evident that these rumblings were well-founded. It was always very ambitious on Ubisoft's part to host this year's event in Paris, considering the French government's frequent shifting of travel and local lockdown rules to manage the coronavirus pandemic. Ubisoft does not clarify in its announcement if it will still attempt to host the event in Paris when it finds a new date. The tournament is traditionally held in Montreal, Canada, with 2021 the first year to see it hosted anywhere else.
