Rainbow Six Siege dev: "I feel sorry for any game that tries our recipe now"

Ubisoft's Rainbow Six Siege is over six years old and it's still one of the best multiplayer games on PC, with a lot of new content coming soon in Year 7 Season 1 - Operation: Demon Veil. Siege is in such a strong position, in fact, that the game's director says it should be "pretty intimidating" for any team-based tactical shooter competitors.

Rainbow Six Siege is getting ready to launch its Year 7 with Demon Veil, complete with a new operator who can repair breaches. Speaking to PCGamesN, creative director Alex Karpazis confirms that Siege is here to stay, and that it's "going to receive all the support it needs to be as successful as it needs to be". He adds: "We have long-term ambitions".

Perhaps the most surprising thing about Siege is, despite still being incredibly popular, there has never been a direct triple-A competitor. We asked Karpazis about this, and he told us, "I feel sorry for any game that tries that kind of recipe now".

Hitting 100 operators still the "ultimate goal" for Rainbow Six Siege devs

Rainbow Six Siege is going to have 63 operators to choose from when Azami is introduced in Operation Demon Veil, which is an impressive line-up. Back in 2018, it was reported that Ubisoft has a ten-year support plan for Rainbow Six Siege and an intention of introducing 100 operators to its tactical shooter. With the number of new operators dropping in recent years though, is that still a target for Ubisoft to achieve? Following a media event for Demon Veil, The Loadout asked Siege's creative director Alex Karpazis about whether this is still their intention and how they're approaching the task ahead.

"100 operators is the ultimate goal", Karpazis says. "We're still committed to introducing 100 operators to Siege."

If Ubisoft wanted to achieve this in its original ten-year plan, it would need to release over ten operators a year for Siege. When this fact was mentioned, Karpazis clarifies that the "promise of 100 operators" was a completely separate entity to the ten-year plan. "We want to think long term for the game", he says, promising players that Siege will be supported for many years to come. However, it's still Ubisoft's goal to hit 100 operators in Siege "regardless of timelines".

Rainbow Six Siege's Azami was a "green goo" operator called Flubber

Ubisoft's Rainbow Six Siege is still one of the best multiplayer games on PC and it's about to hit Year 7 Season 1 - now officially revealed as Demon Veil. It's also about to get a new operator with a game-changing gadget, but to get to this the team prototyped several operators with unique gadgets - including one with a "pile of green goo" called Flubber.

Earlier this month the Rainbow Six Siege team revealed Demon Veil and the new operator Azami, a Japanese defender with a meta-busting gadget called the Kiba Barrier - which can repair walls and other breaches. Azami's the first operator that can do this, although Ubisoft informed us of two other cancelled operators that led to Azami - nicknamed Patcher and Flubber.

We spoke with creative director Alex Karpazis and asked him about Azami's development journey, who told us the operator had "a long and storied past" - primarily "because the idea behind her gadget to repair destruction or patch holes is so integral to Siege".

Rainbow Six Siege dev says Y7S1 Goyo rework is a "special" case

Rainbow Six Siege's Operation Demon Veil update is almost here and it's packed with new content and important balancing changes. Just like Tachanka in Year 5 Season 3, Goyo's kit is getting a major rework in Year 7 Season 1. Speaking to The Loadout about the Goyo rework, senior game designer Angel Maldonado reveals that this is "a bit special" in relation to other reworks in the pipeline.

Following the Y7S1 update, Goyo will no longer have a deployable shield in his kit. Volcan Shield is being replaced by Volcan Canister, an adaptation of the explosive device attached to Goyo's shield. Why is this update special, though? Well, as Maldonado explains, it isn't every day that an operator "does not play within the intended role."

Introduced in Year 4 Season 3, Goyo has had a tough time finding a place in Siege's meta, despite the fact that his unique gadget has - up until this point - included a shield. When asked about why Goyo needs changing, Maldonado details how counterintuitive his shields actually were, saying that even the most versatile operator "normally matches the original intentions."

Rainbow Six Siege's new map Emerald Plains will be in ranked from day one

Operation Demon Veil, Rainbow Six Siege's next major content update, is on the horizon and there's a lot of hype around the introduction of a new map: Emerald Plains. Players looking to climb Rainbow Six Siege ranks and get to grips with the new map won't have much time to do so, though. Ubisoft has revealed that it's going to be available in both casual and ranked playlists on day one.

Emerald Plains is Ubisoft's first Rainbow Six Siege map in quite some time. For the last three years, the developers have opted to rework existing maps and make reactionary changes to the existing environments as opposed to designing completely new ones.

As an Irish country club with a private ranch, Emerald Plains is going to excuse decadence and class in it's visual design - but how will it fare in the competitive arena? While it will be available for some time on the test server, Ubisoft has confirmed to The Loadout that it will be added to the ranked map pool straight away when it releases in the middle of Year 7 Season 1. Ubisoft is clearly confident that it's going to be fit for purpose, and Rainbow Six Siege level designer Josam L. René tells us how Ubisoft has used the last three years to create a new map that is on-par with existing locations.
