To bring Battle Brothers to the Switch in the best way possible, we’ve partnered with Ukiyo Publishing. With over a decade in industry experience, they’ve made sure that it is just as enjoyable an experience on the Switch as it is on the PC. We’re happy to say that they really outdid themselves with creating an intuitive, fast and effective control scheme for the Switch version that just works and is effortless to use.

The best Warhammer game isn't actually a Warhammer game, so we tried to make it one

Who needs Total War: Warhammer 3 when you have Battle Brothers, the real best Warhammer game? It's a tactical strategy game where you must lead a succession of miserable mercenary warbands across a pseudo-Germanic kingdom, each one doomed to become crow food as they pursue the foolish errands of petty nobles.

Civilisation is a fragile web of villages and cities separated by frozen mountains and dense forests. Bandits, goblins, zombies, cultists, orcs, and wild northmen constantly gnaw at the fringes, raiding caravans and slaughtering peasants while nobles squabble and war. Few other games manage to capture the gothic, medieval grimness of Games Workshop's Old World, but there's a catch: Overhype Studios don't have a Warhammer license, so it's not actually a Warhammer game.

For any other game I'd cram in a juicy mod to ramp up the Warhammer content and get my fix of Skaven and Trollslayers. Long before Total War: Warhammer there were Warhammer conversion mods for both Rome: Total War and Medieval 2. Mount and Blade has Warsword Conquest. You can add Warhammer civilisation packs to Civilization V. There's probably a Warhammer mod for graphing calculators. But Battle Brothers? There's nothing even close.

The best Battle Brothers mods

The Battle Brothers mod scene is modest, but has some wonderful gems worth exploring. The game itself was a shining light in terms of indie releases back in 2017. If you haven't encountered it yet, it's a turn-based strategy game where you are in charge of a mercenary company in a fictionalised setting loosely based on medieval Europe.

From humble origins, you have to travel the procedurally generated world taking job after job, gaining fame, money and growing your troop's abilities. The campaign layer is dynamic and progresses around you. It's also hard as nails at times, with one mishandled skirmish wiping out most of your best soldiers all in one go and forcing you to start all over again (or fail). Save scumming is common.

But like all good strategy games, eventually you feel the desire for new things to do. Battle Brother's DLC output isn't so prolific that you can bank on new official content, so we must turn to the modders to find those fresh angles to bring the game to life.
