12/4/22 - FREE Major Overhaul Update Incoming!
Waste Walkers
Hey guys!
Around 7 years ago, Waste Walkers was released. To this day, I still maintain and update the game, all while working on my newer projects. This has been on my to do list for awhile, but I'm going back to Waste Walkers for a bit to make some improvements, upgrades, and some overhauls.
It was my first game, my introduction into game development, and it was far from perfect - it still is, but if you cannot see the love and the work that's gone into this project, you're not looking very closely.
Despite its shortcomings, it helped me get to where I am today, helped me make a lot of friends and earned me a humble bit of a fanbase to continue moving forward with. Many of these supporters have stuck by my to this day and it doesn't go unnoticed. I've done free upgrades and additions over the years, but this one is one of the largest that I will be releasing. Let's take a look at what I've been working on.

After (Bandit machete)

(Colonist security)

Firstly, ALL character sprites and battlers that were using the original (chibi I believe they're called) sprite models are getting (or have already been) completely remade. This goes for all NPCs, companions, and humanoid enemies including ghouls. A few models here and there are used from my other games like the ghouls from Lawless Lands, but most of them have been remade from scratch to look more detailed, diversified, and just overall better. This also means that the longstanding issue of some sprites not matching in type is fixed. This problem bothered me for awhile but I didn't have the time or resources to dedicate to resolving it. This has been quite the task because there were SO MANY of them to fix.
Next, I've done A LOT of optimizing and improvements in terms of how the game runs that I've learned over the years. Some things have been rewritten, some have been tweaked and changed to be more efficient, and some things have gotten minor tweaks to be better after reading through feedback and using some of the new systems from my newer projects. The game should feel a bit smoother and less clunky where it did previously.
Finally, the game has gotten a bit of a polish pass over pretty much the entire thing. I went back and revisited several areas in the game that were lacking and had obvious issues in one way or another. This includes how some locations looked sort of barren (unintentionally), the fog of war was way too thick and restricting, combat text was not appealing to look at, health bars looked like something from the 90's, and a lot of other small issues here and there that made the game look so amateurish. It was, and still is in many ways, it was my first game, but I've come A LONG way since then. A bachelors degree in the field, formal knowledge in programming and game design, years of experience, a lot of energy drinks, and lots of time to reflect. It hasn't all been a walk in the park, but it is what it is.
Now, you may ask, why now? Well, I don't have an answer as to exactly why. I guess I got a wild hair on my ass and wanted to do this finally. That's my official response and I'm sticking to it. Deal.
You also may be asking if this is all really free. Yes. Yes, it is. For everyone who owns a copy of the game on Steam. This is the ONLY place that I've really made ANY money or sales on the game - EVER. Steam is the reason I am where I am today and my supporters who have helped me (or those who have bought stolen keys off the grey market constantly to use on steam............................................) out deserve a special thank you. I've been meaning to do this for a very long time. Point is, if you own the game on steam, you'll get it.

The improvements will be for the base game and the dlc expansions!
I will hopefully have this overhaul update out by next week. You have something special to look forward to from Corrosive Studios for Christmas/the Holidays!
Before I forget, none of this would be possible without the help of my friend, acehangman, who I met while making Waste Walkers originally.
I'll let you guys know more when I know more.
Thanks for reading!
