Netflix has acquired Oxenfree developer Night School Studio

Netflix has acquired Night School Studio, the indie developer behind the cult hit Oxenfree and its upcoming sequel, as the streaming giant makes its first meaningful steps into the games industry.

As per a post on the Night School Studio blog, the developer is pleased with the acquisition, and believes it'll help it further its goal of explorating interactive narrative projects.

"Night School wants to stretch our narrative and design aspirations across distinctive, original games with heart," reads the blog. "Netflix gives film, TV, and now game makers an unprecedented canvas to create and deliver excellent entertainment to millions of people. Our explorations in narrative gameplay and Netflix’s track record of supporting diverse storytellers was such a natural pairing. It felt like both teams came to this conclusion instinctively."

Netflix have bought the developers of Oxenfree

Night School Studio are "joining the Netflix team." The developers of Oxenfree and Afterparty are the first games studio to be bought by Netflix, with founder and creative director Sean Krankel writing in a blog post that they'll continue working on the in-development Oxenfree 2.

In one of Netflix's first big moves as it expands into game devleopment, the streaming company announced on Tuesday that it's acquired indie developer Night School Studio. Night School's first game Oxenfree was highly praised when it came out in 2016, and we also quite liked Afterparty, an adventure game about drinking your way out of hell. Oxenfree 2's villains are sending spooky signals to the original game



The makers of Oxenfree have started teasing the upcoming sequel via audio transmissions in the original game. Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals is set to arrive sometime next year, and it'll feature villains who're causing mysterious radio signals that mess with electronics. But it seems they're already up to no good, because an update to the original Oxenfree has introduced these spooky transmissions, which you can hear in several different areas in the supernatural thriller.
