Layers of Fear receives a brand-new chapter today as "a thank you" to fans

Artsy horror series Layers of Fear might have called it a wrap with this year's game, but it turns out there's one more treat in this bag of tricks: a new free DLC chapter. 'The Final Prologue' delivers yet another tale of artistic temperament gone all creepy and wrong, this time in the medium of film direction. The unexpected epilogue is part of a double celebration; it's nearly Halloween, obviously, but it's also there to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the founding of creator studio Bloober Team on November 6th.

For the uninitiated, the new Layers of Fear shares its title with the 2016 original, but is neither a straightforward sequel nor a remaster, nor quite a remake. Instead, the latest game reimagines the first 2.5 titles in the series as scenarios in biographical novels being written by the new protagonist, The Writer. This provides a nice excuse to replay the stories of The Painter, The Daughter, and The Actor in spiffed-up and rejigged forms, as well as introducing a new framing narrative that serves to close out the trilogy.

Given that the human antagonist of 2019's Layers of Fear 2 was known simply as The Director, it seems likely that this new chapter will share his side of the sequel's story. 'The Final Prologue' isn't the first gaiden entry into the series: this year's game launched with a brand-new side chapter to the first title called 'The Final Note', which retold The Painter's narrative from the point of view of his wife and adversary The Musician.

Layers of Fear (2023) review

When the Layers of Fear remake was first announced, I didn't understand the need for it. Whilst the original game is seven years old now, it still looks great and it's still as scary as ever—so why bother? Especially when developer and publisher Bloober Team is already hard at work on Silent Hill 2, a rather more hotly anticipated remake. After playing through it, though, I get it. I understand why the developers felt they had to remake this, and why they felt it was important to do it now more than ever...

Layers of Fear (2023) review - A representation of both the best and worst of Bloober Team

Layers of Fear (2023) brings together the stories of Layers of Fear (2016) and Layers of Fear 2 (2019), remastering the two horror titles in Unreal Engine 5 to deliver a seamless, puzzling trip into the psyche of creatives-gone-mad. Sadly, this remake represents the best and worst of Bloober Team.

This time around you’ll start out as The Writer, a new character destined to pen the disturbing tales of The Artist and The Actor, while encountering your own unusual goings-on in the Lighthouse you’re holed up in. After having won a competition to write a book about ‘one of the most mysterious and tragic figures in the history of modern art,’ you’ll be exploring winding corridors and tending to a ringing phone that is eerily reminiscent of that in the game’s inspiration, P.T.

Soon, you’re whisked into the grandiose home of The Painter and his family, and things begin to look familiar again. A home in complete disarray, burning candles and dimly lit lamps in each room, even the letter from pest control threatening us with lawyers if we contact them again, are still here. The only stark difference is in quality; built in Unreal Engine 5, Layers of Fear (2023) looks ridiculously good, at the best of times, anyway.
