Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties review - a stuffed remake defined by its own grim connections

Excuse me, coming through. I’m Kazuma Kiryu, and I’m on my way to speak to some gruff yakuza lads about what their local gang war means for my orphanage. You can tell I’m serious because I’m riding a prototype segway dressed in nothing but a swimming cap, goggles and shorts. Now move, I’ve goons to beat up at two, photos to take at three, a biker gang war to resolve at four, and I also need to somehow fit in time to run around town waving my flip phone at strangers.

Once that’s done, I’m all good to head home to the kids I’ve left unattended. There's no time to kick back, though. Vegetables must be planted, fish caught, bags sewed, and homework helped with.

Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties (PC) Review

Despite some concern online, Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties is a good-looking game, matching the visual fidelity of both Yakuza 0 and the prior Kiwami releases. The biggest point of contention, at least, as far as visuals are concerned, is primarily due to lighting and a bump in contrast, something that lends itself well to the bright and vivid beaches of Okinawa, but has the adverse side-effect of sometimes looking a bit over-exposed or saturated.

As Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties is a full remake, some concessions are par for the course. Thankfully, despite fan consternation, the changes are made up for with the inclusion of some new content, not including the Dark Ties... Read more

Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties is getting a day one patch to ensure sunny Okinawa looks less deep fried

Ahead of Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties' release on February 11th, devs RGG Studio have announced plans to put out a day one patch to fix visual issues spotted the remade beat-em-up's demo. Specifically, there's a section of the game's version of downtown Okinawa by a river which players have pointed out to be garishly oversaturated compared to the original Yakuza 3 and its previous remaster.
