History of the Mastiff

Any hunter needs a faithful and reliable companion who will help in trouble, will not let him freeze on a cold night, and in case of trouble will be able to call for help. But hunters most often travel alone, because where two pairs of eyes are looking for prey, both will be left with nothing. At least there is such a sign. Fate cannot be tested to the limit - this is the law in the wastelands.

But a good hunter will always find a way out. And therefore, special companion animals, mastiffs, were bred in the wastelands. These distant relatives of snow wolves are not at all similar to their ancestors - their dark fur always makes them stand out against the snow, but makes them practically invisible on the rocky plains. Heavy muzzle, powerful paws, impressive build, shaggy coat and quarrelsome character. This is how a wanderer who saw him from the outside would describe the mastiff. This dog truly inspires respect, and sometimes fear, in those who encounter him for the first time. However, outsiders rarely see mastiffs.

Skirmishers who go hunting always take their faithful dog with them. Contrary to their appearance, mastiffs are quite harmless and extremely loyal to their owner and his family. They never stray far from their owner, guard his sleep at night, and willingly ride small children on their powerful backs. However, for strangers and for hunted prey, the mastiff has long fangs and jaws that can gnaw through the backbone of a mouflon.

In some settlements, mastiffs are bred, and their puppies can sometimes be found in bazaars and in the Valley of Cold, and even much further south - all the way to the mysterious Ketam Ai. If you happen to become the owner of a mastiff, know that this is not an ordinary dog, its respect must be earned. But if you manage to do this, then you will never find a truer companion. Wherever you go, no matter how difficult it is for you, he will always and everywhere follow you and protect you from any troubles.

Skirmisher Helm

Many tribes and peoples inhabit the northern plains and ridges. The bone hunters who settled along the shores of the frozen sea dug deep into the frozen wasteland. A little further south live the hunters of the wasteland, inhabitants of the endless plains stretching from the icy mountains to the northern borders of Erikuria and Tir Tuaid.

The inhabitants of the wastelands, like their neighbors, live in small communities and engage in trades, the first and most important of which, of course, is hunting. Hunters are respected here, and their traditions are respected and strictly followed. Skirmishers are especially respected - experienced trackers and skilled trappers. They travel alone for long periods of time through the wastelands, setting snares, and invariably return with rich prey.

During the great hunt, skirmishers arm themselves with a bunch of darts, mount a trusty mouflon and ride in the vanguard, driving down the most important game. It is from among the skirmishers that the hunter is selected who at the right moment will blow the bugle, calling on the others to begin the race.
Skirmishers on a great hunt can always be distinguished from other horsemen, because they always wear their bronze pointed helmets. Other hunters prefer leather to bronze, but skirmishers remain true to themselves.

Nobody knows how to forge such helmets in the wastelands, and where hunters got them from is a big question. Perhaps they were brought by traders from the distant south and exchanged for furs, or perhaps they remained with the inhabitants of the wastelands from those distant times when people began their campaign against Erycuria hundreds of years ago. Then the skirmishers walked in the vanguard of the human army and were the first to step into uncharted territories, just as now they are the first to rush forward to the sound of a bronze horn.

Horn of the Great Hunt

Spring is beginning. The snow is gradually melting, reluctantly giving way to the first green sprouts reaching towards the sun. Animals come out of their winter quarters and leave the dark forest thickets. The whole earth comes to life. And the piercing sound of a bugle echoes above it, heralding the beginning of the great hunt.

This has been the custom since ancient times - with the first rays of the spring sun, wasteland hunters saddle their horses and chase their first prey. Those who honor traditions say that this first hunt of the new year is the most important, because its outcome determines how successful the hunt will be before the next cold weather. If hunters bring rich prey, then the year will go well, and the winter will be satisfying, but if not... They usually don’t talk about it out loud.

Many consider all this to be superstition and a relic of the distant past, but the hunters themselves will never allow themselves to go against this tradition. However, hunters are extremely superstitious.

The great hunt always begins with the most experienced skirmisher blowing a bronze horn, giving the command to the others. The Horn of the Great Hunt is a relic treasured by every wasteland settlement. It is passed down from generation to generation - from one hunter to another. Its sound is so strong that it carries for many miles and hangs in the air for a long time after the hunt has already begun.

If you once hear the sound of the bugle of the great hunt, know that somewhere nearby, through the spring fog, a cavalcade of horsemen is rushing, driving the beast. They gallop quickly, and the bows and spears in their hands hit without missing a beat. And it’s better not to stand in their way on this day.
