Vertex's Laws of Hospitality

Everyone knows the simple rule: if you see someone else's fire in the forest, give it a wide berth, because you never know who started it. Taverns, however, are a different matter: they promise warmth, hot food, and a safe night's lodging. Unless it's Vertex's.

Demons whisper that he was once a man: the stubborn owner of a mountain inn that burned to the ground along with his family. Humans, however, swear he's a demon disguised as an old man. But all the legends agree on one thing: when darkness falls, Vertex stops in a secluded spot, unburdens himself of his terrifying burden, and before your very eyes, it unfolds into a veritable tavern.

The old walls stretch and creak, the shutters burst open with a bang, and a dim lantern flickers above the door, beckoning lonely travelers. And inside, the innkeeper himself awaits. Small, gnarled, with unnaturally long fingers. He smiles with sparse yellow teeth, offering "the best ale in the area" and "a warm bed." If the guest agrees to stay, they will be trapped forever in the tavern, with no escape, and their soul will belong to the Ring.

In the morning, the innkeeper will once again transform his establishment into a compact burden and move on—in search of new guests. In its place, only trampled earth and, perhaps, a forgotten travel bag will remain.

They say that sometimes at night in the forest you can hear the light thud of a mug on wood, a stifled chuckle, and a quiet groan. As if someone were sitting down to their last supper.

The Legend of Okomut

No one knows where it came from. It's spoken of in whispers around campfires, and warned against before bedtime. People avoid dark paths because of it. Its name is Okomut.

Those who survived describe it as a distorted likeness of a human: small, unnaturally thin, with skin like cracked wax. But the most terrifying thing is that it has no face. Only a smooth, empty mask where its eyes, mouth, and nose should be.

And its eyes are in its palms. Two black, bottomless pupils that see right through you. Not your appearance, but your soul. Not your words, but the truth hidden behind them.

Okomut doesn't kill outright; it asks questions first. It asks about what you're afraid to admit even to yourself: about old betrayals, about secret hatreds, about deeds you try to forget.

And if you sincerely lay bare your filth and repent, Okomut simply vanishes. As if it never existed. But if you lie, then... disappear.

Where do liars disappear to? No one knows for sure. But some say Okomut takes them to a world woven from their own nightmares. A world where fears take on flesh, where lies become torture, and sins become traps.

Some believe this is just a horror story, teaching children not to lie. But sometimes travelers find abandoned clothes and hear muffled screams in the fog.

The Story of the Revived Horse

In the old village of Greenwald, the legend of the sorcerer Rance still lives on. He lived in a high tower on the edge of the village, and the fame of his kindness spread far beyond the surrounding forests. Rance healed people and animals, and when the Great Plague swept through the kingdom, the mage saved more lives than all the royal physicians combined.

He also had Mara—his beloved, his assistant, his light. Together, they brought goodness to this world, and it seemed nothing could ruin their happiness. But one night, bandits came to Greenwald.

They burst into the village and demanded all the gold the villagers had. Those who resisted were killed. Mara was one of the victims. Before Rance's eyes, one of the bandits slit the girl's throat, and the sorcerer flew into a rage. He began weaving dangerous spells that tore the villains' flesh, blinded them, and turned their bones to dust. But the bandits were too numerous. One of them, a skilled archer, loosed an arrow and pierced the mage's chest.

Rance fell to his knees and felt his life drain from him. Before he died, he noticed a dead horse by the road, channeled a stream of magic into it, and then died.

The horse began to come to life. Its eyes flashed crimson, black smoke billowed from its hooves, and a terrible neigh erupted from its mouth. The reanimated animal rose and began to kill. The bandits fled, but the horse overtook them one after another. It tore them with its teeth, trampled them with its hooves, leaving only bloody remnants.
And when the last of the attackers fell, the horse stopped. Its creator was dead. As if realizing this, the horse neighed and galloped away.

Years have passed since then. No one has ever seen the revived horse. But sometimes at night, the residents of Greenwald hear the dull clatter of hooves and see the silhouette of a black horse with glowing eyes. Surely, he still protects the village.
