The Risen Dead Event - Live NOW!

[p][/p][previewyoutube][/previewyoutube][p][/p]
Hello everyone,
[p]
The bell still tolls for the dead of the Maryland campaign. Blue and gray laid to rest in countless shallow graves across the battle-scared countryside. This night, however, some ancient evil stirs in the wind, rustling the autumn-clad leaves and disturbing the freshly dug dirt. They are here![/p][p]We’re excited to announce that “The Risen Dead” event is now live! Band together, Johnny Reb and Billy Yank, or die alone to the hordes of the living dead! Supporting 150 players battling up to 800 zombies at once, “The Risen Dead” Halloween event of War of Rights continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in an FPS game while still maintaining a focus on teamwork at a massive scale.[/p][p]
Use the all-new buildable fortifications, player abilities and upgradeable weapons to defend against the endless hordes, but keep an eye out for the spread of the risen dead![/p]
Fortifications & Fieldworks
[p][/p][p]Here's the place we'll make our stand! Brace yourselves – the dead do not rest, and neither shall you. In this year's event, the living may now prepare the battlefield with new means of defense against the relentless tide.[/p][p][/p][p]Between each stage, players will have 2 minutes to spend their bounty cash (earned by returning the risen dead back to their, hopefully, eternal slumber once more) to upgrade weapons, refresh health and ammunition, and also to place fortifications exclusive to the Risen Dead event. All of this and more is accessible via a "shop," representing a cache of supplies delivered by unseen help to each point of contention.[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]Gabions – Woven wicker baskets, filled with earth and stone, now stand ready to blunt the charge of the shambling masses. A humble barrier, but one that may mean the difference between life and an early grave.[/p][p][/p][p]Cheval de Frise – Rows of sharpened stakes, driven into stout frames, now line your defenses. Any of the undead foolish enough to stumble against them will find their advance met with splinters.[/p][p][/p][p]Palisade Wall – Hewn logs, set firm into the ground, rise high against the press of the horde. Tall and unyielding, a wall to hold the line when all else falters.[/p][p][/p][p]Stand fast, build well, and remember: it is not just the shot nor the bayonet alone that keeps death at bay.[/p]
The Spread of the Horde
[p][/p][p]Following last year’s defense of Harpers Ferry, survivors will return once more to face the first waves. The familiar streets and bridges will again be stained with blood, but the dead have grown bolder.[/p][p][/p][p]The undead have been sighted spreading through Antietam, across the rolling fields of South Mountain, and into the dense forests surrounding the Drill Camp. As the event continues, additional battlefields will open, offering new ground to defend and new horrors to face.[/p][p]
[/p][p][/p]
New Horrors Awakened
[p][/p][p]The clash of musket and cannon against the restless dead has shaken the very earth. From the smoldering soil, a terror unlike any yet faced now rises: a colossal beast of shadow and flame, whispered by the trembling few who survive its presence as The Inferno Titan.[/p][p][/p][p]For those hardened companies who endure the slaughter to Wave 15, this new trial awaits. The Titan’s form towers above all others, its molten fury searing the night. To bring it down will demand unity of fire, precision volleys, and unmatched artillery coordination. Only the most disciplined of regiments will prevail. Triumph here is not just survival—it is the key to unlocking this year’s special achievement, earned only by slaying the Titan across every battlefield.[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]With the awakening of the Inferno Titans, the undead grow more clever and more dangerous. The brutes now wield a terrifying strength, wrenching boulders from the earth itself and hurling them toward the living. These stones crush flesh and timber alike—no line, no wall, no soldier is safe from their barrage of stone.[/p][p][/p]
Upgrades, Equipment and Abilities
[p][/p]
New Upgrades and Weapons
[p][/p]
  • [p]Torch Bearer Upgrades – The Torch Bearer now has a dedicated set of upgrades, which can be purchased to improve the deployment speed of players in the spawn queue.
    [/p]
  • [p]Scoped Whitworth – A new addition to the weapon pool, the scoped Whitworth comes with a unique upgrade to increase bullet velocity, making long-range shots even deadlier.
    [/p]
[p]Improved Artillery – Artillery effectiveness has been greatly enhanced for the Risen Dead event. Explosive shells now deal damage over a much wider area against the undead. With direct hits stunning Brutes and Titans alike. The Spongerammer can also be upgraded to load and interact with artillery pieces more quickly, keeping the guns firing at full pace.[/p][p][/p]
Abilities
[p][/p][p]Officers of both the Confederacy and Union now have new tools available in the shop:[/p]
  • [p]Artillery Strike – Designate a target area for off-map artillery to bombard, clearing the dead and disrupting their advance.
    [/p]
  • [p]Morale Boost – Rally your men on the field, granting double damage for a short duration as courage spreads through the ranks.[/p]
[p]After purchasing their new abilities, officers can bring up the ability menu mid-game by pressing H and deploy them.[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p]
Increased Player Count
[p][/p][p]This year, the battlefield swells with even more defenders. The player count for the event has been raised from 100 to 150, giving your regiments greater strength but with every new soldier comes an even greater threat. The undead have multiplied accordingly, with up to 800 zombies on screen at once, pressing from every direction.
[/p][p]Prepare for larger engagements, relentless waves, and the ultimate test of teamwork. Stand firm and make your mark with us in one of the largest cooperative shooter events ever staged.[/p]
Regular Content Additions
[p][/p][p]We know the reanimation of dead tissue isn’t everyone’s cup of (sweet) tea, so we also have some content additions for regular War of Rights which is not part of the time-limited Risen Dead event.[/p][p]Years ago, when we introduced the Pry Ford and Grist Mill skirmish areas, we included in these fictional scenarios an unusual hybrid unit of infantry and cavalry for the Confederates, designated Holcombe’s Legion. The only problem with this is that the cavalry and infantry portions of the historical Holcombe’s Legion were never mixed as depicted in-game, and the mounted portion (dismounted in-game) had been on detached service for some months before the Maryland Campaign. Today, we have replaced this incorrect Legion on the Pry Ford and Grist Mill areas of the Antietam skirmish rotation with a new, historical Legion.[/p][p][/p]
Introducing Jeff. Davis Legion
[p][/p][p][/p][p]We are proud to introduce the Jeff. Davis Legion, a Mississippi battalion brigaded with Wade Hampton's cavalry during the Maryland Campaign that consisted of three companies of Mississippians, two companies of Alabamians, and one company of Georgians. Players will find in this new Mississippi unit a new battle flag, an assortment of new jackets (including a very fancy early war shell and matching trousers), and new Mississippi and Alabama buttons and buckles representing the historical composition of this unit. The Jeff. Davis Legion appears dismounted in the Pry Ford and Grist Mill skirmish areas on Antietam, equipped with Sharps carbines, sabres, and an assortment of pistols.[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]Our historians can also finally let out a sigh of relief that Holcombe’s Legion is now, at long last, brought up to historical standards. These South Carolinians, now appropriately portrayed as a regiment of infantry sporting Enfield Rifles, are now featured on Crecy's Cornfield in the Drill Camp rotation.[/p][p]Appearing alongside Holcombe Legion at Crecy's Cornfield is a unit that for many years has only been accessible in War of Rights in the Confederate drill camp. We are very happy to say that the Third Alabama Infantry is now finally ready to redeploy in combat. This regiment now also features a new National flag and some other updated materials, including the aforementioned Alabama buttons and buckles.[/p][p][/p]
Update Risen Dead 2025 Patch Notes
[p][/p]
  • [p]Added Jeff Davis Legion dismounted cavalry to replace the unhistoric cavalry section of Holcombe’s Legion at Pry Ford and Pry Grist Mill skirmish areas, Antietam.[/p]

Update 199: 400 Player Support - Released!
Hello everyone,
Today, we’re excited to bring you Update 199: 400 Player Support to War of Rights!

As the title suggests, this update increases the official player cap from 350 to 400 players per server. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg in today’s update—there’s much more to announce, explore and enjoy.

Before we get into all the excitement of today’s update, we want to take a moment to celebrate three amazing people who have risen from the ranks in our incredible community to become valuable contributors at Campfire Games.
Where Passion Meets Profession: Players Become Developers
With today’s update, we’re proud to highlight both new and long-standing developers who began as members of our community. Their passion and deep connection to War of Rights brings valuable insight as they help us continue to improve and expand the game.

At its core, War of Rights is a game with a dedicated, passionate, and knowledgeable community. Without your deep interest in the subject matter, your constant efforts in fostering an immersive experience for everyone, filled with a big focus on teamplay and roleplaying, the game would likely never have gotten to where it is today.

We’re thrilled to formally present three former community members who are now part of the Campfire Games family. We’ll be highlighting some of the exciting projects they’re working on and celebrate one of them reaching their 5-year anniversary with us!
Time-limited Event: War of Rights: 1776
[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
Get ready to shave those beards and powder those wigs. Today, we are proud to announce 1776, an all-new addition to our growing roster of time-limited annual events, which commemorates the War for Independence.

We’re extremely excited to announce this all-new addition to War of Rights, marking Independence Day in style. Kicking off on July 1st and running through Independence Day and the weeks that follow, this special event lets you step into the Revolutionary War and fight for liberty as an American patriot—or for the Crown as a loyal British subject!

This immersive dive into the Revolutionary War features a host of new content: historically inspired regiments, period-authentic weapons, unique flags, updated animations, refreshed UI elements, and more.

This event wouldn’t be possible without the incredible work of Morgan Seifer, known in the community as Pingu, who recently joined Campfire Games. A longtime contributor and passionate history enthusiast, Morgan has brought this vision to life with remarkable attention to detail, and we’re thrilled to have him on the team.

We cannot wait to head back, “four score and seven years ago” to 1776 and experience the flintlock musket action together with all of you! This time limited event begins on July 1st.
A new Campfire Games Video Series: Campfire Chats
Today, we’re excited to launch Campfire Chats—a brand-new developer video series from Campfire Games, inspired by the classic George’s Corner videos. In this series, we’ll cover War of Rights gameplay, recent updates, announcements, and dive into historical discussions—plus much more!

Campfire Chats is hosted by our brand-new Marketing Specialist, Cody Karov—better known in the War of Rights community as General Cody HD, a bit of a legend for creating hundreds of standout YouTube videos about the game. He’s joined by Clark Morningstar, Campfire Games’ veteran historian, scriptwriter, narrator, sometimes singer, and more—known to the community as GeorgeCrecy. Rounding out the trio is Bradley Smith, our talented texture artist, battle flag connoisseur, and fellow historian, also known as Chaplain Bradley in the community.

Campfire Chats launches today on our Youtube channel as well as in the media section of our website and we expect to be publishing bi-monthly episodes for you all to enjoy!
Announcement: Weather & Atmospherics Overhaul
Launching alongside the 1776 event on July 1st is a complete overhaul of the game’s atmospherics, cloud systems, and weather effects. First up are major improvements to cloud shape and formation. The skies now feature more natural, defined cloud structures—replacing the previously noisy and uniform appearance.

Rain and storm clouds are now physically simulated and move dynamically across the battlefield. You’ll be able to see them forming and rolling in from the horizon, giving you time to prepare for dramatic shifts in weather. In fact, it’s now possible for one part of the battlefield to be caught in a downpour while another remains completely dry.

Atmospheric effects and fog have also been significantly upgraded, with enhanced visuals and extended visibility. These improvements integrate seamlessly with the new cloud systems, creating striking sunbeams and more immersive weather conditions. A new weather type—thick, oppressive fog—has been added as well, offering a moody and intense battlefield experience.

Lastly, a new dynamic wind system has been introduced, affecting how grass, trees, and gun smoke behave in the environment.

These new features will continue to be developed and refined after launch, and we’re excited about the new visuals, variety and atmosphere they will add to future matches.
Shadow Improvements
In today’s game update. we’re excited to bring a visual upgrade that adds even more depth and realism to the battlefield. Screen Space Shadows with Micro Detail. This enhancement allows for finer, more accurate shadowing on small geometry and surface details—making everything from subtle protrusions in the terrain to intricate object edges feel more grounded and visually rich.

It also improves how surfaces receive shadows, preventing them from looking flat or overly uniform. This added depth brings out the texture and shape of the environment, helping everything feel more three-dimensional and alive. Furthermore, we’ve also significantly extended shadow draw distances, allowing for greater visual fidelity across our large environments.

This is our own adapted and enhanced take on the brilliant work by Bend Studio, originally presented at SIGGRAPH. If you're interested in the technical details, you can learn more here: Inside Bend: Screen Space Shadows.
New War of Rights Website Released!
As many of you may have noticed, a few months ago we quietly launched our new website at warofrights.com. It brings much-needed visual and functional improvements compared to our previous site—which, at over 13 years old, was showing its age. This is also the first important step towards the integration of Service Records, detailed HERE. None of this would have been possible without the expert web development skills of yet another recent addition to the Campfire Games development team, Anthony Wiedman—known in the community as molex. Before joining CG, Anthony created several popular War of Rights-focused web tools, and we’re thrilled to have him on the team. The quality of his work speaks for itself!
Flags, Flags Everywhere!
We’d like to round this community-member-turned-developer presentation off with an honorable mention of Bradley Smith, who has just celebrated his 5-year anniversary as a Texture Artist and Historian at Campfire Games! Bradley was a long-term community member and original crowdfunder of the game before he became a developer (to the great joy of every player with a deep interest in battle flags or just historicity in general!). In many ways, his joining the team was a trailblazing moment, expanding the scope and pushing at the settled team composition that would eventually lead to us being able to present to you today the three old War of Rights community members turned into new Campfire Games developers!

Happy 5-year anniversary Bradley, and here’s to five more and thanks for leading the way (and for the flags!)

We hope you all enjoyed our presentation and are looking forward to the many upcoming additions to the game (in-game as well as outside of it!).

Now, let’s dive into the patch notes of today’s update below!
